Welcome to Episode 6 where we discuss the intriguing and profound insights of Sri Dasam Granth Sahib with an expert, Dr. Kamalroop Singh. This episode uncovers the mysteries and answers the commonly asked questions and critiques about Sri Dasam Granth.
📚 About Dr. Kamalroop Singh:
Dr. Kamalroop Singh holds a PhD from the University of Birmingham, School of Philosophy, Theology and Religions. His thesis, “Dasam Granth Re-examined,” explores the depths of Sri Dasam Granth. A renowned author, he has penned two insightful books: “Sri Dasam Granth: Q&A” and “The Granth of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Essays, Lectures and Translations.”
🌟 In This Episode:
Getting to Know Dr. Singh (00:00 - 10:00): We begin by learning about Dr. Singh's upbringing, the inspiration from his Bibi Ji, and his academic journey leading to his PhD in Sri Dasam Granth Sahib.
Sri Dasam Granth Sahib (10:01 - onwards): Delving into Sri Dasam Granth Sahib and addressing the ‘so-called’ controversy surrounding it.
💡 Historical Extracts:
We discuss key extracts like:
Illustrated London News, 4th April 1846 - Insight into Guru Govind and the reverence for 'Dasama Padshah Ka Gurunth.'
Sir John Malcolm's experience in the Punjaub in 1805 and Mr. Colebrook's pursuit of the two most sacred books of the Sikhs, ‘Adi-Gurunth’ and ‘Dasama Padshah Ka Gurunth.’
Below is a breakdown of the questions:
00:00 - Family history, upbringing and Sri Dasam Granth
10:50 - What is Sri Dasam Granth?
12:56 - Was Sri Dasam Granth written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji or could it include the work of court poets or others? Who do the pen names Ram & Shyam refer to? In the process of answering this Dr. Kamalroop Singh outlines a raft of early Dasam Granth manuscripts starting in 1688 and uses further historical evidence to remove any possibility of court poet material being used.
18:50 - Why do some of the earliest manuscripts have compositions ordered in a different order or exclude certain compositions completely?
26:20 - We dive deeper into the history of the Bhai Mani Singh recension of Adi Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji & Sri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji.
30:50 - Parralel parkash of Adi Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji & Sri Dasam Granth Sahib Ji.
40:06 - What is Charitropakhyan
44:38 - Is Charitropakhyan misogynistic?
47:00 - Does Sri Dasam Granth lack originality due to its inclusion of puranic texts? How is Sri Dasam Granth part of the social revolution of the Khalsa?
51:10 - What does Maharaj mean when he states he comes from the khastriya lineage? Is this a declaration of caste?
53:17 - What was the influence of Colonialism and the Singh Sabha upon Sri Dasam Granth Sahib?
1:01:19 - How does the concept of the female divine energy fit into wider Sikh thought?
1:03:00 - Is there a Sikh theology?
1:12:40 - How do you explain the story of Guru Gobind Singh ji and Naina Devi Yagna found in Bansavalinama by Kesar Singh Chibber?
1:17:16 - What is the relationship between reformists such as the Bandai Khalsa and Teja Singh Bhasauria with Sri Dasam Granth?
1:22:00 - Bandai Khalsa & contemporary records
1:28:00 - Will Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ever be parkash at Akal Takht?
1:32:30 - How does Jhatka & Dheg fit into Sikhi?

@@sahibsingh2036 they are too naive to understand the importance of Shri Charitropakhyan sahib and they see sikhi through a lens of sansari politics and find dasam granth sahib as a text that worships hindu gods which is not the case actually. This is all done in lieu of sansari raaj that makes them go against the guru himself, going as far as rejecting their bani. They haven't given their head and avoided paying to socities' opinions, rather are too hungery for kursi and proving others we are not muslim/hindu etc. Basically they have taken the soul, the spirituality out of sikhi and turned us into crypto Christians to prove we are not something xyz.

"Until we don't honor Guru Gobind Singh's bani, we're going to be stuck in this rut" VERY well said! Once I attended a Sikhi camp where they would recite the cut choupie sahib as per sgpc/Basuria. I found it uncomfortable, started raising questions to other attendees, and ended up challenging the camp heads on the subject. The controversy wasn't resolved, but I made a resolution to never, under any circumstances, submit to the cut version. The next morning I saw something in my meditation: a colorful group of Sikhs crowding the complex of Harimandir Sahib, the sangat had a glow about them and were loving, chaupei sahib had been officially restored. The rut that Kamalroop is talking about will certainly be broken one day and the Khalsa Raj will begin to blossom. It shall happen.

@@RamblingsofaSikh that’d be awesome. I’d love to watch a podcast on KZfaq between you two. Only reason I bring this up is because I think the questions you raised about femininity and misogyny could’ve been discussed deeper here, which I believe a female researcher would be more inclined to do. 🙏🏽

I guess from a linguistic standpoint, everyone has a DNA when it comes to writing. There's sentence structure, word choices and of course, their style of speaking (voice). This is one of many aspects used in these specific studies. This doesn't include ink, page dating, historical elements as well.
