Thank you for letting us know. We are more than happy to help you out. First, we would like to address the type of popcorn that you are using. The Amish style black popcorn is not optimal kernels to be used for types of popcorn makers like air-poppers. The reason is because they tend to be smaller in size and weight and are more likely to blow out of your unit. The amount of popcorn that you use is also important. If you use less than the recommended amount as outlined in our manual, there is a greater likely hood that the popcorn will blow out of your unit because there is less mass inside the unit, which makes it easier for the hot air to blow out the kernels. Finally, there is the issue of “dry” popcorn. While this may seem strange, if the kernels you purchased has been sitting on the shelf for a while, the kernels may be a little too dry to use in an air-popper. Popcorn kernels do require a little bit of moisture, that when heated, expands and provides the fluffy texture we all know and love. We would recommend that you fill a 12oz mason jar (or a similar sealable container) and add 1 teaspoon of water before sealing, shaking, and allowing to sit overnight.

The problem is it's not deep enough. The hot air popper we had in the 1980s (wish I could remember the brand -I was a kid) was deeper and didn't make the mess.

There's a trick to it. I know, they shouldn't have made it that way, but there's a trick that gets it on perfectly ever time. Just put the back tab in first, then lower the two front ones into place. It'll still sit on top, but then hold the front down lightly and pull up the back about 1/4 inch, and the two front ones will pop in with no force.

Try tipping it back 30 degrees or so. Be careful to make sure it's double stable. I put mine on a breadboard with a towel under one end. Though I'm still getting very stale popcorn that I can't eat.

There's a trick to get the top on. engage the small tab at the back first, then line up those impossible ones at the front. Hold the front down lightly, and pull UP on the back of the top about 1/4 inch, and the two front ones will drop right in.
