I was taught as a young driver , to engage trailer brakes first then pull forward just a little, so there is tension on that kingpin, therefore it can't be pulled out. My stepfather was a good teacher, Thanks Dad.

Satiesh Isaac - I’m sure there are several made specifically for semi’s, but there are many dashcams available that have ‘parking mode’ which means they react to motion within a given distance and also detect movement if the vehicle it’s in gets moved and this is while the car, truck, or other vehicle is turned off while the driver is away. Or in this case, asleep.

I agree. I drove OTR for 11 years and then 5 years for local delivery before finally earning a promotion that got me out of trucking. I still maintain a CDL A for “just in case” (still drive in an emergency/employee shortage). I learned very quickly that it’s everyone for themselves out there. I rarely turned on the CB because of all the negativity spewing out of other drivers. I’d rather get stuck in a traffic jam than get advanced warning and detour. That’s how bad it was. I ran into lifelong drivers over 70 years old who were completely in awe of how bad it’s gotten over the past 30 years. I couldn’t wait until I got out. It really takes a special kind of personality with extreme patience to deal with all of the over regulations from federal DOT and the drivers like this who are so bored and twisted that they have nothing better to do than mess with other drivers.

I used to drive truck years ago. Two simple rules to live by are; whenever you leave your truck for any reason and for any length of time, do a walk around inspection. No exceptions. Second rule; the first gear you always put your truck into is reverse with the trailer brakes set, then forward with trailer brakes still set to test the kingpin connection. The guy who pulled the kingpin is a real jerk, but the driver should have known better. I'm sure he learned his lesson after this.

Years ago i was parking at a truckstop and had to politely ask a driver not parked in a space to move back 4 feet so i can get in a space. I offered to buy his breakfast and coffee for moving back for me. He said it was all good and he was going to roll out in 15 min anyway. Well when i inspected my truck after a nap i saw that he had put an armored abloy lock on my trailer with a note cusing me for bothering him. I actually remembered his company name and truck # from talking to him and about 6 months later i saw him in the same truckstop. Well while he was asleep i pulled his valve cores on all his tires (all 18 of them) and left the lock peices hanging in a bag on his mirror so he would know why it happened. The lock ended up costing me around $100 to remove it ( had to buy a grinder, extension chord, and grinding wheels) but cost him a lot more.

For you non heavy vehicle drivers, you can't just air up the tires. You have to jack the wheels off the ground, because the bead lock let loose, when the rim came down. My brother used to run the bus system for a school district, and senior pranksters did the same thing to about 75 buses. Get to work at 0500, see all your buses have AL TIRES flat! Luckily, he had surveillance, and a few kids didn't graduate that year. It was the next day, before he had a working fleet. HillBilly, I would have been not quite so nice! I'd use a knife! You offered a meal, and he stabbed you in the back! (No, I do NOT drive a truck, but respect the HELL out of you all!) Never felt safer, than in a group of trucks. steve

@@E3ECO Exactly. I've been trucking for many years and I've seen the industry go down hill, but the same is with everything. Too many people on the road period and all are in a hurry to go nowhere. The problem is that many of the DOT regulations that have come out in the past 10 - 15 years are because of drivers like JT. Think they know everything, done everything, done it better than everyone else, yet when you see them on the road, their the ones with the road rage, speeding 10 - 20 mph over the speed limit cutting people off, forcing people out of a lane just because he wants to, carrying 2 -3 different log books so they can drive when they want to, popping pills to stay awake for an entire week cause that loads gotta get there. I had 2 "old school" morons like that pass me just after dark in the middle of a major snow storm while everyone else was doing about 40 mph (cause quite frankly you couldn't see 20 ft in front of you) doing about 70 or more. I politely told them they might want to slow down some and was quickly told the common phrase "I've been doing this for 35 years, I know what the fuck I'm doing, shut the fuck up and drive your own truck pussy". Okie dokie then. 7 miles up the road as I was about to pull in the Flying J because it was unsafe to drive, what do I see. 1 moron flipped over on his side in the middle, the other on the shoulder flipped over. I said yep, I've only been doing this for 10 years, but I guess I know what I'm doing as I pulled in and parked for the night. Long winded, sorry but examples like this really show not arrogance, but true stupidity of allot of "old school" drivers. Heard this same thing in different ways over the past 20 years.

A really, really hard beat down. I don't even drive trucks for a living BUT I most certainly have a conscience. Seeing this sorta thing and NOT doing anything about it would give me a lot of sleepless nights wondering if the trailer went slamming into traffic and killed a family. Yeah, we (cops and I) caught someone who did this to me. He pulled the kingpin AND tandems, all caught by the left mirror camera. Idiot even posed for the two dash cams (one normal full HD, one wide-angle full HD, blinking red record LED and blue transmit LED), demonstrating his limited imagination in giving the single finger salute for several minutes, making finding him on the 64 GB chips quite easy. He told the female cop he was angry seeing a woman doing a man's job. Not to terribly bright, and a few fries short of a Happy Meal. Arrested for driving with a revoked CDL and criminal mischief. Cameras do not lie, have no bias or malice, and are a trucker's best friend. So is a quick walk-around VI whenever away from visual range of your rig, after a nap, etc. It's how I spotted the problem in the first place. It is sad to see this still goes on, even after more than 6 years involuntarily retired from the road (crippled by my last company). Y'all be safe out among the Idiot Factor.

After reading some of the comments and confessions in them I'm glad I never did end up going for my CDL. It was something wanted to do since I was about 3 years old and asked my dad what a person has to do to become a trucker because I loved being on long drives so much. I decided I was certain I wanted to do a few months after getting my regular driver's license, once I got comfortable driving on all kinds of roads, driving conditions, etc. Turns out I'm a pretty good driver. Statistics say so anyway. I've been licensed since I turned 16 (learner's permit at 15 and a half but friends were teaching me to drive off road since age 12), I'm 39 now and I've never been in an accident with another vehicle, not even as a passenger. I've driven all over the USA. I love to drive, love long road trips, especially spontaneous ones. I've moved across country a few times hauling everything in large moving trucks and towing vehicles up to the size of a SUV or minivan behind, through the mountains a few times (in heavy fog, sleet and snow at least once). I bought all the study guides for the CDL on my own and they weren't cheap in the late 1990's before there was a serious shortage for C D L drivers. I imagine they can be snagged for practically nothing to free nowadays, illegally if nothing else, but I bet there are plenty companies willing to pay for & train people that will sign a contract for employment with them these days? I've owned ~15 vehicles (1-2 at a time, not all at once) of various kinds -from sports cars to custom vans. I think I would have made a decent CDL driver, but most of all I always thought I would enjoy it. From time to time I've regretted never having followed through on it, but I had 4 kids over the last 17 years and as a mom, it just didn't seem right to do. I think I'm over it now though. I don't think I'll ever "romanticize" it in my mind like I used after seeing how easily other truck drivers who should know better and understand the dangers and hardships more than regular drivers (I was already aware of how they mostly unknowingly, foolishly put truck driver's lives at risk all day everyday), but to come to find out how often it is that truckers will use their knowledge against one of their own instead of sticking together is disappointing. Could you imagine the force to be reckoned with y'all could be if you had one another's backs like the gangs in blue do? I don't care how stupid some trucker was, you shouldn't be sabotaging their shit. Teach them a lesson in brotherhood and teach them the right way, don't stoop to their level, bring them up to yours. Have pride in what you do. Make others respect what you do. Shit. You really could have some serious power if you all stuck together. When I was little we had a C.B. radio in my dad's van and we would go on road trips and talk to the truckers. They were so funny, and sounded like they were having such fun just chatting with people (often strangers) passing by. So friendly back then. I guess times have changed. You guys let the youth come in and change the game. You should have schooled them. Is it too late? I'm up too late. I can't rant on anymore. I wish you all super safe travels.

The old New Braunfels TA. I've been there a few times. Had my first "backing" accident there in 2004 but I was the one that got backed into. I just HAD to park next to a KNIGHT trailer (with no truck) and a few hours later after I went to sleep the driver came in and for some reason did not look to see if he was lined up with his trailer and backed right into my truck. He was very remorseful. We just took info, made our calls to our companies and that was it. There was minor damage to my rig but it was drive-able so I drove it back to my company the next day. No retaliation, no cussing each other out, no fights; just handling a situation professionally like we are suppose to do. I guess that wasn't very exciting was it? I'm just glad it didn't come apart on the road, because that would have the possibility to kill people. That guy in the Mack needs to be brought up on serious charges and he'll be easy enough to find if he was getting fuel. Set your trailer brakes and bind the fifth wheel release mechanism if you are going to be away from your tractor. He's at the least needing a Heavy Duty lift to set the landing gear to height, new glad hands, and a Phillips block for the lights. Maybe more than that. Minimum bill? $2300 if there is a local shop that has his parts inventoried. That could be a lot steeper depending on the area. This guy might have cleared anywhere from $500-$1500 for this load depending on if he is an owner/operator or how he is getting paid from his company. Which sucks, but it is a learning experience for the rest of us. Realistically, the driver should have walked around his rig because of the idiots that tend to populate this world. I've heard similar stories from a lot of truckers, but most had to do with co-workers that had a gripe. I don't even have my CDL, but my Pap was a Trucker and I've helped a lot of people cover miles to make it back to where they are needed because of what I learned from him as a kid. I have the utmost respect for the industry that barely sleeps and I can still change a 24.5 inch tire by myself in under a minute with only a hammer and a spoon. Take a minute to check your hub oil on your pre-trip inspection as well. We just had duals come off and kill a guy in my area that was just sitting in a restaurant eating breakfast. These idiots don't realize what can happen on the road. If you are reading this, please have a safe trip and get back to what and where you are working for like you left.

You my friend, are an IDIOT! These connections are designed to pop apart when the trailer comes off. That is why they are called BREAKAWAY connections. $2300?? You do realize that EVERY trailer has low and high range landing gear cranks? All he has to do is start cranking to raise it up again. Once he is backed up under it, he can switch to high range and raise the landing gear. And even if one of the connections broke, the hoses are only $90 for a pair, and the wiring harness is $75 and has plugs at both ends so its a fast swap. He MIGHT pay $100 in shop labor, and ANY wrecker worth a shit can pick up the trailer and it only cost $200-300. All they will do is slide a chain around the king pin and stretch it to the front of the trailer and onto the hook, then start lifting it up. Once it is up high enough, the driver can put the gear in high range since the landing gear has no load on it, and spin them down to the ground. All done.

I know I don't have the experience to dispute the rest, but I'd love to watch someone change a 24.5" tire in under a minute with only a hammer, spoon and no help. It'd better be a semi truck tire and not a bicycle tire; which I also doubt can be done close to that fast.

I don't doubt your credibility, bug I highly doubt you changed a 10 lug, 24.5 inch semitruck tyre in under a minute... I've raced rallye cars for years and have had to change a puncture mid stage a number of times... and this was a standard 15 inch car tyre... get the jack down, lugs loose, car in the air, lugs off, tyre off, tyre on, lugs on, car to the ground, lugs tightened, tools and tyre put away and the boot latched shut took at least a minute to a minute and a half... so I just don't see changing a semitruck tyre in under a minute in any conditions... but I been known to be wrong, so, I don't know...

I drove for 17 years and was a road instructor for a truck driving school I always taught to set your trailer brake, pull forward with the tractor and set the tractor brake. When you come back out you should do a walk around of the truck anyway. Air lines are good, look at the fifth wheel lock handle make sure it is in, landing gear is up, thump the tires, check the lights clean if needed, make sure your tag is still there on the back of the trailer, and check the back door making sure the seal is still there if you have one. It takes no more than 5 min tops.

for those who think this is funny or deserve somehow how would you feel if for some reason the fifth wheel hung there for a while long enough for him to get on the highway and get up to highway speed and then the trailer came off the truck and killed your family. it does happen. a trucker would never consider doing this for any reason to anybody what a dumb move. the guy needs the s*** kicked out of him.

I was hauling a load of Bowater big rolls of paper my very first load out of school! They sent me to New York ! Then picked up a load of carpet going to California! And had me routed to over and down the worst incline I had ever seen! An England driver saw me at the top where we had to stop for equipment inspection! He asked how long I’d been driving and told him one week! I was in an automatic truck and he told me to stay behind him! He strapped two tires to his D.O.T bumper! The nose of my truck stayed in contact with the back of that England drivers trailer! We get to the bottom and pulled into a rest area! I was shite as a sheet and my hands hurt from gripping the wheel! He was my mentor for a year! I’d call him and he’d call me to check on me! England trucks were good looking equipment! Broke my cell and lost his number! The was my hero for a year! Never saw an England driver driving a dirty truck! We all have to learn some how! ! My respect to England trucking Co!!

Our instructors in CDL school told us about this, so one of my first habits I developed before I take off is to push the yellow valve in for the truck air brakes but not the red air valve for the trailer brakes, then slowly release the clutch for half a second to test the trailer brakes, and to ensure the kingpin is locked and the truck does not pull out from under the trailer. I do it every time.
