I spent my career in the insurance industry. At the time, pre-existing conditions were still a thing and if you were found to have lied on your application (about a pre-existing condition, smoking, etc.) you could be cancelled and your claims denied. TWO DECADES ago I was told by someone in senior management that the applications really played no part in determining premiums because they paid a lot of money to some service that told them everything about everyone. He said if you buy cigarettes at the gas station, buy junk food, are in bars on the weekend, go skydiving, etc, we know and that is how premiums are determined. The applications are just for show, but can be used to legally cancel/deny later on. This was long before anyone was even imagining such things were in use.

I wish I'd known this stuff 20 years ago. I'd had a hunch and knew a little bit in my teen years but didn't know the depth of it until my 20s. I'm in my 30s now and honestly it's too late for me. My children have data out there (by data I mean they have SSNs and medical records, just like everyone else) but they're still children. I can't go back in time, but I can try to figure out how we/they can maybe minimize how much of their info gets out there going forward and as adults. It's no picnic :-/ Edit: a word

In our town, they told us they were building a solar plannel plant. They had people take college classes so they could work in management. They would keep telling us all the great stuff about how it was going to make good jobs. Then came the "strange" stuff. They would fire the contractor for ANY little reason . They never quite gave the proper info on what college classes to take nor what job they would have open. Then they gave a tour for a few realtors & 1 was my friend. She said there was a whole city under the plant. Strange.. Then POOF they said they decided they can't make the pannles as cheap as China . So they "sold" the plant . Wanna guess to who? Google & Lg. Great idea for drunk drivers, but not so great if you're just a law abiding citizen that values their privacy. Do you all Realise that ALL the Credit Cards consider Anything Purchased with their Card, Belongs TO Them? The only time that changes, is When you Clear ALL Debt! IF you keep a Running Debt, 7 years, without Paying it In Full? ALL you bought in those 7 Years, they STILL consider it Their Property! If you dig into Fine Prints, this can be Deduced. It is like the Banks! Your Pays or Tax Credits etc, get Deposited? Fine print SAYS? THEY OWN the Funds! Not YOU! And they CAN.DENY YOU to Remove it! It is Yours, only if you hold it IN your hands!
