Nah a smart officer with the ability to do so would brief as much as possible on the crew under their command before they assume command. For most people if the order to assume command was at short notice that would be limited. But for Data, well. He would know the entire service records of every member of that crew inside out and already have compiled a list of strengths, and weaknesses subject to change, before 60 seconds had even passed. I think it's more that he is double checking his calculations as his XO has suggested there is some variable he may have missed. But yeah, great acting.

I really loved the 5 minutes that this whole thing took to finish, data had to basically beg for a command since even Picard wasn't sure that he could handle it and in the next 5 to 10 minutes he fielded this objection perfectly without any hesitation just as a commander should and then proceeded just minutes later to show that he had the balls to forge his own path instead of blindly following orders and single handedly stopped a convoy that the entire fleet had failed to stop. So in the course of less than 10 minutes he assumed absolute command, read the tactical situation perfectly, and outdid Picard as a tactician. This entire scene is the reason why the next enterprise series should have been Data in his own command.

The key here is that the XO knows he is biased. He also knows the rules and policies. He is afraid that is own prejudice and bias will affect others as the number 2 on the ship. Data understands this. Data understands that as a human he has to struggle with emotions that an android doesn't. Instead of accepting the transfer, Data knows the record and the potential of the XO, and keeps him under his wing to push him to be better. But by getting all of this out in the open, they can build a true relationship based on trust and mutual respect.

Exactly this. Credit to the XO for being mature and quietly airing his concerns directly. He doesn't want to make a scene or complain. Although, "I don't like androids being my commanding officer" probably isn't a good enough reason to transfer so Data was right to shut him down.
@pulpmysteryfan
@pulpmysteryfan Жыл бұрын
@@Her_Imperious_Condescension That's true about quietly sharing his concern, although I wouldn't congratulate someone of his rank for not making a scene. But ultimately I thought it was dereliction of duty. The XO wouldn't do his duty because he assumed Data couldn't do his. As far as he was concerned he wants the "problem" to be handled by someone else. "I think this situation may be problematic, so I'd rather someone else deal with it."
@Grizabeebles
@Grizabeebles Жыл бұрын
The thing is, Hobson tells Data he's a racist (or close enough) in front of the entire bridge crew. That's terrible behaviour for an XO, poisonous for ship's discipline, and a sign that he thinks serving under Data is *worse for his career* than being transferred or relieved of duty.

The other day, we were asked who we thought was the funniest chracter in all of Star Trek. I chose Data. This is why. That dead eyed deadpan delivery, the complete and utter lack of defensiveness or emotion, somehow doesn't strip his reaction of deliverying the perfect signal on how foolish his opponent is, but it amplifies it. This was utterly hilarious. The "I understand your concern" beforehand, setting up the board for the guy to get his request, but before just CRUSHING him, made it 10x funnier.

Cheap writing tricks are literally all writers ever do in tv/movies these days. Like the Bond movies were even dragged down into the mire of turning them all into Netflix style episodes where every cheapest possible writer's trick was just thrown into a blender to force drama - ie, Bond and Blofeld are suddenly relatives (??), killing off characters constantly for cheap dramatic effect, every single movie Bond leaves the service for some reason then has to get asked back, every single movie they're all constantly banging on about "trust!" and "betayal!" every few lines. They even did the cardinal sin of cheap writing where they then killed off James Bond and suddenly threw in some totally unbelievable falling in love with some block of wood character he only just met and has had pretty much no relationship with nor even anything basic in common, then suddenly at the very end OH he has a daughter - chucked into the story blender for a few minutes to pretend there's a good story and drama. Every single movie and tv series does this stuff now, all written by committees of marketing executives telling a bunch of clueless hack writers what to do.

Doesn't matter they may not agree with the Russia's choices and merely understand them. Politicians, and I can safely say that it's the USA politics that's most at fault here, only see either complete submission, or enemies to be eradicated. She was basically on one end of the political spectrum and she always said that the best partner she ever had when it came to coming up with new ideas and troubleshooting stuff was a guy on the exact opposite of her on the political spectrum. I believe she was left and he was right. But they both wanted what was best for our town so they both overcame their political differences and used their differing perspective on things to come up with better ideas and keep each other grounded. It just goes to show that just because someone disagrees with you doesn't automatically make them an enemy. They may just have a different perspective or see things that you've missed, just like you might have a different perspective from them and see things that they have missed.

It's the same as how Spock wore the blue shirt in TOS because he was Science officer on top of being 1st officer. If you watch the 1st series of TNG both Worf and Geordy have red shirts until they change roles. Dispite how it's used in various trek based games nothing on screen actually suggests starfleet has seperate/rigid career paths. Technically Data should have changed shirt, but since it was a short term assignment in an emergency it would have been pointless.

Hi Zack W - I'm so sorry for any kid that grows up in a difficult family or worse, or even 'just' in a family that loves them but doesn't understand them or their needs, or a family where they 'fall through the cracks,' etc. I'm glad you were able to get through it & find your way past it while winding up w/ some clarity about it. Every child deserves love & deserves a safe, functioning, nurturing, stable family. As a kid, I had love from family & still sometimes suffered, but someone had let me know this: Jesus loves you, & he loves everyone. That made a difference in my life & he was my 'true north.' Hoping for you all good things in life.

Do you know what Data and Jesus have in common? They are both fictional characters who don't exist and can't directly do anything to help anyone. Do you know what the idea of Data has brought us? Entertainment and inspiration. Do you know what the idea of Jesus has brought us? An institution which has perpetrated eons of hatred and violence. Your religion is nothing more than a mechanism to explain the weather, brain wash and control the population and to justify atrocities. Good people will do good because they think it's the right thing to do. Evil people will do evil because it suits them. The difference is, good people don't need a justification. On the other hand, telling a bunch of folks who have been trained from birth not to think for themselves that the "word of god" is that we need to go kill those people over there, or accept whatever cruelty over here, has been a really successful tool for evil people to use. Just want to model yourself after a character because you agree with their ideals? Fine. I choose a scientist and humanitarian who is strong, intelligent, puts other people first and attracts the occasional strong, beautiful, independent woman. You want unconditional love? Get a pet. You want salvation? Believe in your self. Find your own strength. That's what I did. @@zackw4941 Those who do not take personal responsibility do not know their own religion. From a worldly, psychological perspective, Christianity is about becoming a better person. The motivation to the person is couched in mysticism, but the end result is a better person... if all tenets are followed properly. When it comes to purely secular results, Jesus of Nazareth and Gene Roddenberry had the same goal. I'll stick to the requirements for God's forgiveness. There's so much more about personal responsibility in the Bible, but I'll stick to this because it's what you brought up. Jesus flat-out says that even if you profess and believe, if you do not love thy neighbor as thyself, Jesus will not know _you,_ and will not intervene for you on judgement day. He might not speak against you, but He will not speak for you, either. On top of accepting Jesus as your savior, these are the requirements to receive God's forgiveness for your sins. 1) Admit you have sinned. This need not be aloud, but the first step is always to admit that you have a problem. 2) Make amends. Make things right. Don't just punish yourself, that's not enough. You need to make the victim whole again, as best you can. 3) Take steps to keep yourself from performing that sin again. An ounce of prevention, and all. This is the part that speaks to becoming a better person. You slipped and made a mistake. We all do that. Get back up and learn from it. Change yourself such that it doesn't happen again. 4) Forgive those who have sinned against you. "... and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us." Basically, don't hold a grudge. The cycle of revenge is a terrible one, and accepting the extended olive branch is necessary to break that cycle. You need not forget. Do, indeed, take steps to keep yourself from being burned again. But you do need to forgive. Judaism is about building a better society. Christianity is about becoming a better person, a lot of which is personal responsibility. It's all about free will. You can ask God for strength to make the right decision, but making that decision is ultimately up to you. In the end, _you_ are responsible for your actions. No human is expected to be perfect, but they are expected to try. If a Christian does not take personal responsibility, they have missed the entire point. I'm not saying you're wrong here. A _lot_ of so-called Christians really aren't. That's true of any religion. But when you find the 10% (or whatever) of professed Christians that truly _are_ Christian, know that they aim to become the kind of person exemplified in Star Trek. Live long, and prosper, my friend.

@stanpatterson5033
@stanpatterson5033 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure about protocol(s) in Starfleet or typical space operations, but Naval and typical maritime protocol is to address whomever is placed in charge of the vessel by whatever means or circumstances, as "Captain". For example, if the captain of a fishing vessel with say, 20 hands on board, were to fall seriously ill and have to be evac'd suddenly for medical care, whatever person either takes or is put in charge, is usually then addressed as "Captain" until they are no longer required to serve in that capacity. In another example, for purposes of crossing international borders on land, the chief operator of a land-based vehicle, such as a truck, who normally holds the title as merely "driver", takes on the title of "Master" of the vessel (Master is used since the vessel is not a ship, and giving the title of Captain would not apply). This denotes that the person designated as "Master" of said vessel (the truck) is the one responsible for the correct paperwork, and assumes the liabilities and consequences of any incorrect (or worse, misleading) entries that may not be properly documented on the provided paperwork. It's a title thing. Someone must be in charge, and be accountable for actions taken. So whether Hobson truly admires or likes Data or not, he's sort of admitting that Data is the person in charge, and addresses him as so, be it begrudgingly or otherwise.
@gotham23us

All you did was use a whole bunch of words to agree with me. Come to think of it, if a Klingon is incapable of becoming a counselor, then the entire idea of a ship's counselor is stupid. There are countless species with varying physiological/neurological/psychological needs. A counselor would have to be versed in all of these, or some new theory would have to be developed that links all species according to a spectrum or paradigm, thus creating in a new specialized field of counseling that addresses the problems of all of them. It wouldn't be anything like what we know as a psychologist today, and would probably not address the same problems. In that case, any such hypothetical field, if it is at all applicable and relevant, should be able to train, and be learned by, anyone of any species. If it cannot be PRACTICED by a Klingon, then it cannot SERVE Klingons because it is irrelevant to their needs. If that's true of one species, how many countless other species could it be true of? The needs of thousands of Starfleet Officers are just being ignored as much as if there were no doctor onboard who could attend to their physiology.

2nd Officer of the Flagship for 4 years is more than adequate to be a temporary captain of a much smaller ship. Despite the saucer section of the Nebula being the same size as that of the Galaxy, the bridge is clearly much smaller (Intrepid-like).
@Lukas-Trnka
@Lukas-Trnka 6 жыл бұрын
A Nebula class starship is definitely not a "much smaller ship". Actually it's quite large. Normally it have almost as large crew as a Galaxy class. Although it was not in this case. But ofcourse it doesn't change Hobson's feeling, that android cannot be a good captain.
@DarthObscurity

Nebula is the Galaxy successor. Same size, different configuration. Galaxy is nice and spread out, or in other words, a giant target no matter what profile. Nebula is compact, much smaller profile from sides, though large saucer section still presents good target from top and bottom.

The only thing the Nebula Class lacks is the neck that connect the saucer to the engineering section. Other than that, it has nearly the same amount of interior volume space as the Galaxy Class.
@iainhewitt
@iainhewitt 6 жыл бұрын
I believe that in the lore, the Nebula and Galaxy class vessels were developed concurrently, indeed one of the functions of the Nebula class vessels was to recover Galaxy class saucer sections that had been separated from their primary hulls and reattachment had been rendered impossible by damage or loss of the primary hull. Hence why the saucer sections were essentially identical (Note the appearance of a Nebula at the site of the loss of the Enterprise D, for example). The reasons for producing two similar designs are quite obvious - the Galaxy class was designed to be a long service, deep space exploration vessel, its duties required it to be a generalist - carrying vast cargo holds, massive amounts of scientific equipment and extra space for dignitaries and entertainment that the Nebula did not need for its role as a more specialist vessel. Instead the Nebula class was clearly following a design cue from the TOS Miranda class with underslung nacelles and a mission specific 'pod' that could be removed and replaced for different mission profiles. This meant that border patrols might be fitted with extra torpedo pods or long range scanning equipment while a vessel being sent to investigate an anomaly in a nearby nebula (ha!) or tertiary star system might be outfitted with a 'pod' designed specifically to gather the details expected to be found. The Nebula was not a successor - it just had a different use within Starfleet.

I've always believed the producers used Data to show the weaknesses of human emotions and personalization in command and leadership. Piccard summed it up in an episode where he told Data he relied on his "clarity of thought". This entire episode is excellent in demonstrating how Data's wonderful directness and logic undoes even Piccard.

This shows the power you have if you have your own emotions on a switch. A “normal” person would be offended by this and would naturally have a difficult time making a decision on this without factoring in that offense / emotion. For Data this is just another data point (pun not intended) that he is able to review and discard since it doesn’t fit the other numerous data points that he has proving otherwise. It’s as if the other officer said “ your uniform is blue.” Data knows it isn’t, see with his own eyes can check his internal diagnostics and confirm he’s operational and then discard the erroneous comment. Next. If we can learn to do this we can operate more effectively in difficult circumstances. But it ain’t easy.

This whole subplot was pretty well written. If it were today you'd be beaten over the head with Hobson making immature schoolyard jokes about Data's eyes and skin or something. Instead, his prejudice is rooted more in concern than blind ignorance. He's honest and gives his reasons why he's uncomfortable to Data's face, by also being respectful to his commander. The episode doesn't end with Hobson getting fired or having to delete his Twitter and do mandatory Federation sensitivity training or whatever. It ends with him growing and learning from his initial fears and accepting Data as a capable captain.

0:58 "You're a fellow _officer_ and I _respect_ that, but no one would suggest that a Klingon would make a good ship's counselor or a Berellian would make a good _engineer._ They're just not _suited_ for those _positions."_ Well now, first, I have no frame of reference when it comes to the Berellians. They're not mentioned _anywhere_ else in all of _Star Trek_ (a fact that becomes increasingly remarkable as time wears on and the amount of material _Star Trek_ produces increases). But first, if they _truly_ are this technically inept, how could they have made contact with the interstellar community in the _first_ place? Second, if I was assigned to a starship, and one of the engineers was a Berellian, I could only infer that the same people who had tested and come to trust _my_ skills had also tested and come to trust _theirs_ and I wouldn't really have any business continuing to question that with _them_ unless I wanted people to continue questioning that with _me._ I mean was I implying that Starfleet doesn't really know how to _test_ people? But second, indeed, I don't think _anyone_ would suggest that a random Klingon off the _street_ would make a good Ship's Counselor. Or, for that matter, a random _Terran_ off the street. Or a random _Betazoid_ off the street. Or a random _El Aurian_ off the street. _None_ of these people would be suited for that. Was Deanna Troi qualified to be Ship's Counselor because she was half Terran, half Betazoid? No. She was qualified to be Ship's Counselor because she had undergone the necessary _training._ _That's_ the key. The question in whether you have the attributes of a good Ship's Counselor is whether you've undergone the necessary _training._ One who has is _qualified._ One who has not is _not_ qualified._ That's the long and short of it. So what if the party who has undergone the necessary training of a Ship's Counselor just so happens to be a Klingon? Does this party deserve consideration?

@Manek Iridius Well, I wouldn't have gone on a tirade. A tirade implies I would have yelled it at him. I would have said it calmly, but in a very stern tone of voice. When chewing someone out use ice. Not fire. People don't respect your authority if you go on angry rants. The only people in the military who get away with ranting are drill sergeants, and that's because they perform a different duty than commanding troops in the field. If they were assigned to field command they wouldn't behave in the same way. Also, seriously, with a crisis going on this man does not have the luxury of turning down a vital assignment just because he's got personal problems with his superior officer. In a crisis you buckle down and do what you have to do. Furthermore, there is nothing unprofessional about reprimanding a person for bigotry. No matter how "civil" he is about it his behavior is still unacceptable in his line of work. Whether you're bigoted against a race, gender, religion, societal class, nationality, or sexuality you'd better leave that behind you when you join a uniformed service. There are no white people or black people in the army. Only green people.

_Gotta keep this mixture above 90% or we'll never leave orbit... Thank you Mr. Craig._ Good job setting the tone of respect and confidence needed of the officers and specialists on your vessel. I'm pretty sure he's in his position because he's aware of something as fundamental as propulsion when he's tasked to engineering on a Starfleet vessel. He only got away with that because the officer was far his junior and the man put his rank in front of him. Men like this have no desire to make others stronger. Only that they do their jobs so that he may succedd. It doesn't matter whether the guy knew a thing about fuel. What mattered was that he knew it didn't matter to his commander, comes the day he thinks he has a right to speak his mind. It will eat at him and his perception of worth and value at the expense of his ships readiness and efficiency, and keep him in line. Because normal people give a damn about others. Even the ones who don't. They only care so far as it is useful to them to need to know.

The Chinese finger puzzle requires lateral, counter-intuitive thinking. He could obviously have easily torn the thing apart, but he was attempting to solve the problem, not just free himself. They were attempting to demonstrate that he could solve huge scientific and mathematical problems in his head with far greater speed and efficiency than a human, but lacks the creative capability humans have.
