So accurate. Nobody expects new hires to know anything beyond basic general coding skills and a strong willingness to learn. Every company has their own unique collection of technologies and it's impossible to find people who know all those techs on the up front. Tip to those new to the biz, don't kill yourself trying to learn everything as soon as possible. Do some tutorials to get the basics and learn the rest as you go. Only work on the clock too; they don't pay you to work off the clock.

Yup, I applied for an internship at my uni. The focus of that internship was supposed to be UX design as well as UI design work. For the first 5-6 months I have done nothing but user testing of a prototype in one of our labs using eye-tracking. But for the last 7 or so months I was told to start coding in python and learning to program a neural network in keras. Never worked with python in my life, they just expected me to do it.

@IsobarBrokenFlame
@IsobarBrokenFlame Жыл бұрын
@@mohit4902 you should look at the cutting edge of Platform Engineering and Game Development, if you want to talk about intense. DevOps Engineers and Game Developers burnout on average in less then 3 years. DevOps Engineers often opt to keep the DevOps title but become automation engineers. Game Developers usually just leave to do Business Line of Application. The top 5% earn more than the top 5% of Data Scientists or Data Engineers (a lot more). But you’ll physically see the difference… grey hair, pale skin, lack of muscle due to 12 hours a day at a desk. Usually health issues, that come from a lack sleep, movement or sunlight. If you’re smart you do it for 5 to 8 years and then retire. Go into property or some other investment with passive returns. Hi @@aunox5657, Okay I’ve had to edit this post several time so here is the short version: I looked for houses in commuter distance of the Capital. I then found houses that were affordable (2 or 3 beds max) in those areas. I leveraged the first house to buy the second house, and the second to by the third and so on. I put my own money with the smaller mortgage always to reduce the payment duration as quickly as possible. When one was paid off I moved my attention to the next. I didn’t want to be over mortgaged for too long. Timing workout for me and I rode the low inflation era. I paid off two, and sold three. I used the money from the sells to fund my business, and buy an office. The office had three floors so I kept the ground floor for my business and rented the other two floors out. Eventually I sold my business. That’s the short version, and yes there were times I was in a very uncomfortable position and had to basically quit my job on the spot as I need to make more money as the interest rates moved. So jumped job and sometime city, sleeping on friends sofas to take jobs that paid more.

I can totally relate to this video. I worked in a lab where my responsibilities were split between R scripting / learning, excel analysis + graph creation (in GraphPad), and wet lab work. Every time I had a question about anything regarding R or the data I was working with (mass spec.) the post doc I was to be 'mentored' by would hit me with interactions very much like this. Where I didn't get a chance to fully clarify how he wanted me to achieve some HUGE ask before throwing on another large ask in the same conversation. It was hell. It didn't work out. Also I am finishing up a data science undergrad now. Really hoping my first employer won't have unfulfillable expectations of me. I really just want a job with reasonable expectations, as then I can actually look good when I put in time and a half, instead of still feeling like a failure.

lulz!! This is so on point... not just for DataScience, but also for really... almost every job in the tech field. And it applies whether you're an intern, employee, or contractor. >_> What's worse... after a few months of this, you will start communicating with new hires like this as well. *facepalms* Too funny. But only because it is so accurate. TLDR; expectation is that you are able to shift gears and change directions on a dime. What you were interviewed on... the actual in-house stack is more complex and usually a hodge podge of different engineers' vision of how to implement a given task, before they moved onto another team. Documentation is a fevered dream. And don't forget, if you touched it and were able to help someone else on it... you might very well own it now. But, yeah, definitely get on that scrum. Remember to update your Jira/Asana/Remedy tickets. *lol* "Just bash it out" omg.... is it worse if I know what was meant by that? ;_; But thanks for this vid!
@WingWong
@WingWong Жыл бұрын
For those who are getting into the tech field, regardless of your role... things to keep in mind: 1) Regardless of what you were interviewed on and what was on your resume, you can safely assume you will need to pickup at least 1 new language and learn at least 2 applications/systems you are not familiar with. When do you learn this? Whenever you can, really. -_-; 2) Get comfortable with Mac OS X. It's become a sort of defacto standard. Folks might have their Windows laptops or their Linux laptops, but for better or for worse, Mac OS X has a strong footing. The servers, however, are a mix of Linux/Windows.. either in-house or in the cloud. 3) You aren't expected to instantly know it all... but you are expected to go and find the information and learn it... or reach out to others on your team to get context/etc. >>> Seriously, get to know other people in the company.. .they will be your lifeline when you hit a system you have no knowledge of.

im a pure mathematician. Im still an undergrad, but im about to finish my degree. I can tell you right now that you probably dont need that much maths in data science. Linear algebra for machine learning, some multivariable calculus and differential equation knowledge to be able to analyse data. Thats probably it. The stuff that u do in math past second year (for pure atleast) is in excess of knowledge needed for data science. You are never going to need group theory, real analysis, etc.. Statistics i guess is needed, but thats a major on its own. I think u learn most of the stats in a first year course; p-test, confidence intervals, poisson distributions, etc.. Dont be scared of math, its not that difficult. It just seems daunting because alot of people say its hard. Keep this in mind tho, those that say its hard either dont try to understand it, or are the ones that are doing pure math. I dont think ive ever heard a person doing applied math or statistics say their subjects are difficult.

Christ, the Mac... At my workplace we started getting M2s and M3s recently, especially after Crowdstrike's mess, if we sign up for it. Half of those that got them still can't seem to get everything working properly, and those that have are now complaining that all regression calcs are lagging because RISC apparently sucks major nuts at complex math. Oh, the joy.

This is common but toxic as hell. The lack of steering and direction here from the senior is just setting everyone up for a world of pain. Also a lot of those decisions foisted onto him are bunk.

To the lot of you. From what I've heard and am reading. If this is the system of the Biz. I would be a great Data scientist... But guess what? I don't even get to interviews. I know SAS, SQL, R, Python, VBA, C# and I study mathematics and statistics for a future career as a quant or Actuary. My understanding is this. 1. If you are going pure hardbreed statistics people will ask for R, SAS and SQL (Nobody knows that SQL is seperate in actuarial science in denmark) 2. If you're asking for more top notch finance-oriented or reality focused stuff, python is the way. VBA is for low tier economics, which is what I'm doing right now. It's the operations or investment managers, not so much the difficult predictive stuff and fintech areas. Most of the time. IF-loops, for-loops, each-loops, logical operations galore. Mathematical models are in some sense just conditions that have to be met and if they aren't met another output has to be printed

Damn, this shit happened to me. I got hired as an intern for financial risk in a insurance company. Supposedly to do automation tasks and maybe some database management, using mainly python and sql. Anyways, I finished my induction today and it seems like, aside from the 2000 applicatons and microsoft services that the company uses, I will mainly be using R, power BI and excel

Lol, never expect the video and the comment section to be this relateable. Applying for DA position at my current company, spent some months learning the basic for tools etc. Only to be put on DE position after I officially joined, working with tools I've never use or heard before. The first few weeks was horrible. No training or what not, I don't know what to do and feels like this position doesn't fit me. Been 2 month since then and I really enjoying the position right now lol.

dont be afraid to ask why, sublime is just a text-editor while VS Code is an IDE that allows you to use terminals, easier to implement extensions and intellisense mainly
