The Bible is vague about the date of Jesus birth. Can we know the exact time and place? The Bible is full of clues, and we have to use all of them to figure it out Plus we have to utilize history, science and astronomy. Combining them all, we get and amazing answer - one you will not expect.

You, are absolutely correct. I did the quick math using Zachariah date of when he left for home after completing his priestly duties, probably in May, John was conceived. Mary must have been pregnant three months when Elizabeth gives birth to John the Baptist, probably March...Six months later, Mary gives birth to our Savior, Yeshua, in September. The bible teaches that if we continue to do something that is perceived wrong and in this case, acknowledging and celebrating a pagan holiday that shows no reverence to our Savior, and still do it, is wrong..so, as Christians, I ask my dear brothers and sisters, is this something you want on your conscious. The Word of God tells us to be separated from the world and all of its worldly nuances. Rather than celebrating these pagan holidays, celebrate the blessed Feast Days of God. They should be a joy to us and they will be a joy to the Lord!

Sometime in the new year we will do a video series on the feast. You make a great point that why would we celebrate holidays not given to us by God and neglect holidays that are given to us by God? Even though there is freedom in Christ why would we use freedom in this way? We will bring that point up in that series

I grew up in the Worldwide Church of God. From birth we always celebrated the Feasts of the Lord. We did not celebrate Christmas. During the Feast of Tabernacles our family gave gifts to one another. It is only the last 10 years that my wife and I have looked into the origin of Christmas more thoroughly. I believe that our Lord, though not orchestrating Christmas, has used this time period for people to consider His birth as the Savior of the world. I see Colossians 1:11-17 and Romans 14:4-10 as examples in the scripture that Christians need to show grace to one another and as you say Nelson in your video, it is a personal decision whether we celebrate Christmas or not. I appreciate Mari S comments as well. Thanks for this very in depth video.

The problem with our churches today is that they throw out the baby with the bath water. Yes, these are the Lord's feasts, not just Jewish feasts and we should at the very least acknowledge them. I am having a difficult time keeping the feast of unleaven as it requires removing every item from your house that contains leaven and that is extremely overwhelming to our household , considering we have no other place to store the items...so I am very pleased that you will cover this in the new year. Here is a little breakdown I found on the feast days: God’s seven annual feasts are relevant to both Jew and Gentile today. They show, prophetically, God’s complete plan concerning the coming of the Messiah, the redemption of mankind, judgement and the establishment of the Kingdom of God on earth. The first four feasts have been fulfilled: Passover, Unleavened Bread, First Fruits and the Feast of Weeks or Pentecost (the birth of the church). The last three feasts (Trumpets, Day of Atonement and Tabernacles) relate to the future.

Thank you Brian for your enlightening comment. When our Savior brought me to the knowledge of His feasts days, I was so ready to keep them and to find a local church to partake with them...sadly there was none. So, I fast on those feast days and spend time with the scriptures. When I read Isaiah 60-61; it was difficult to do without crying after every verse! It meant so much to read that chapter during Rosh Hashanah...the feast of trumpets. Let us pray that more of our brethren will come to know these blessed feasts. God will reveal Himself in such a way that their hearts will ache having not known sooner. These feasts are as close to God as we can get!

We can estimate when Jesus was born by counting backward from his death on Passover, Nisan 14 in the spring of the year 33 C.E. (John 19:14-16) Jesus was about 30 years old when he began his three-and-a-half-year ministry, so maybe he was born in the early fall of 2 B.C.E.-just a theory . G-d bless you Nelson always.

@@NelsonWalters Studying it can be a can of worms lol. I believe Hashepsut was the pharaohs daughter, Moses was in line to be the pharaoh as she had no male children with her husband and half brother thuthmosis ii. Moses leaves during this time, she becomes pharaoh and raises thuthmosis iii until he can rule. The bible places it in 1446 BC. (890th year before the destruction of the Temple in 587 BCE). So it was thuthmosis the 3rd...if egyptian records are right. He had a coregient son that died (unlike the movies he wasn't a baby or even a child but a first born) His second son Ahmenotep the 2nd was away fighting, his first born died too. Thuthmosis body was mangled (said to be by looters in antiquity) and had signs of boils. Ahmenotep never had any military campaigns during his reign. Interesting enough it dates Joshua's conquest starting in 1406. Egypt was silent between 1446 and 1406. The Tel armana letters beg an unknown pharaoh for help as the "Hibiru" conquer cannan which happens to be the first and last time an egptian ruler converted to the belief in 1 God (Akenheten) There is even a writing which seems.to be an eyewitness account of the plagues called the Iquwer Pypyrus.

Hi Nelson. Thank you for the very interesting video. I listened to it several times. Recently, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about Christmas. I’ve come to the conclusion, for myself, that as we pray daily to thank Heavenly Father and his most Holy Jesus for the sacrifices they made for our eternal salvation, should we not also be thankful every day that Lord Jesus was born? For the purity of His life and the miracles that He performed? Just a thought. To me, in that way of thinking, every day is a celebration.

@@NelsonWalters I agree with you regarding Jesus possibly being born on September 11th, because they're various different sources that verified it as well. However, I personally rather not celebrate Christmas because of it's pagan roots, especially after I found out that even the early apostles traditionally never celebrate any form of birthday due to it's pagan origins. Perhaps you can research that fact and do a video regarding the reason why the apostles never celebrated birthdays.

Excellent teaching! I have read several chapters of Joseph Lenard's book online and was fascinated to learn about "Migdal Eder", the tower of the flock. This makes so much sense! God is in the details! And the prophecy in Micah 4:8 sure seems to support this. Your presentation here clarified the issue of when the sacrificial lambs were born (in the spring), so that the tower would be available to Joseph and Mary for Messiah to be born there. Also the fact that the shepherds were in the field at night, as someone below also mentioned. I couldn't reconcile how there could be sacrificial lambs in the field and being born in the tower at the same time, which is what I had thought. Well, they were born in the spring, so it's logical they would be in the field this time of year. And note, the scripture only mentions a "flock" (singular). I recall that Lenard writes that these sacrificial lambs were also wrapped in swaddling cloths (which is why I thought they were being born as the same time as Messiah), because they had to take such special care of them to ensure they were acceptable for sacrifice, no blemishes (or injuries). The angel gave the shepherds two signs, that they would find him 1) wrapped in swaddling cloths and 2) lying in a manger. Thus, they "made haste" to look for him, because they knew right where to go to find him. Does the fact of Yeshua being the "Lamb of God" give us any clues as to the true length of His ministry? I refer back to the sacrifice of Isaac, for which the LORD provided a ram, but Abraham said the LORD would (i.e., future) provide a lamb. There is one teacher who believes that Yeshua's ministry may have actually been about 70 weeks, in other words a little over a year, not 3 1/2 years. He says, "Yeshua was a one-year-old lamb, not a 3 1/2 year old ram." I'd be curious to know how old the sacrificial lambs actually were on average when they were sacrificed in the temple at Passover (perhaps a clue to the length of His ministry?), considering that Passover would occur somewhere between March and the middle of April, as I understand it. In any case, how was the idea of a 3 1/2 year ministry for Yeshua calculated? Could it actually have been less? 3 1/2 years actually seems like a long time to me, especially considering that the religious leaders almost immediately wanted to have Yeshua killed when he started performing miracles. Would His ministry really have been able to last 3 1/2 years? I don't know, but I think it is something else to consider. Have you studied this, Nelson? It would be interesting to see a video teaching on this as well to hear your thoughts. As you said, knowing these things that aren't so clear may not be so important in the scheme of things, but when we love someone we want to know everything about them. Furthermore, there are lots of "traditions" taught that are not Biblical (like, for example, Mt. Sinai being in the Sinai Peninsula!). Merry Christmas, Nelson, and thank you for your ministry! God bless!

In Luke, we are told about the conception of John Baptist. After his father, Zacharias, who was of the course of Abia, completed his service in the temple, he went into his wife, Elizabeth, and she conceived. John Baptist was 6 months in the womb, when Mary who was pregnant with our Lord Jesus, walked into her cousin Elizabeth's house, and John lept within his mother's womb (Luke 1:5--44). In 1 Chronicles 24: 10, we are told that the eighth of 24 lots fell to Abia. The tabernacle of the tent of the congregation was set up on the first day of the first month. If Zacharias went home immediately after he complete the days of his ministration in the later part of the month of Tammuz (July), and Elizabeth conceived, John Baptist would have been born 9 months later in the month of Nisan or Abib (April) [Luke 1: 23-24]. Jesus was/is six months younger than his older cousin John Baptist, so Jesus was born in the month of Tishri (late September/early October). This agrees with the fact that Jesus was 33 and 1/2 years old on Passover of the year that he was crucified.

I’ve been preaching this for years cause of Johns birth and how it is connected to Yahshua’s conception and birth which also points to this same time of year... then he was born in the fall feats and fulfilled the sprIng feasts... and will return likely to finish the remaining fall feasts, which are fulfilling to say the least of what God intends within these feasts

I know from keeping sheep and goats myself birthing lambs isn’t the only reason to be out with the sheep. Ancient herders would want to keep sheep moving day after day to reduce the parasite load in the animal, if they stay in one place too long they start reingesting parasites and isn’t as big a problem in the cold months when the low temperatures help. This is what would have been practiced in a time without deworming medications or you would lose a whole flock really easy. Just saying I could see flocks being moved greater distance in the later fall months before bringing them home for winter. I’m sorry I do not have any architectural evidence, only what I find reasonable from my own experience.

There are two leading arguments for the birth date of Jesus. 1.1st is the traditional date in December 25 in conjunction with the Feast of Hanukkah and Zechariah's temple service during Yom Kippur which is his second service. 2.2nd is the October birth which is conjunction with the Feast of Sukkot and Zechariah's first temple service. This would place Hannukah as the time when Jesus was conceived which is still close to the traditional date. I think there is no problem with either dates because both dates are in conjunction with important Jewish Festivals. And to think that the first Christians were Jews, they put new significance of these feasts to center on Jesus.
@NelsonWalters

thanks Stephen, but here are some things to think about. If the shepherds were in the fields, it couldn't be one of the three holidays requiring the shepherds to be in Jerusalem. Sukkot is one of these so that is out. Second, we discussed the possible service times of Zecharias in the video. there were two times plus the 3 main holidays when they pulled an extra shift. So that makes 5 potential service times. Based on this there were only 3 months possible. Recheck the video so see what I mean.

The Bible does not specifically say the date of Jesus’ birth. However, the worldly tradition of December 25th is wrong because it is a winter month and the scriptures speak of the sheep being in pasture (Luke 2:8). A study of the time of the conception of John the Baptist reveals he was conceived about Sivan 30, the eleventh week, [our June 22]. Many Bible believing scholars believe Jesus was born during the Feast of Tabernacles. Matthew Henry states: “It is supposed by many that our blessed Savior was born much about the time of this (Jewish) holiday; when He left His mansions of light above to tabernacle among us (John 1:1), and He dwelt in booths. And the worship of God under the New Testament is prophesied of under the notion of keeping the feast of tabernacles, (Zechariah 14:16). For, (1) The Gospel of Christ teaches us to dwell in tabernacles, to sit loose to this world, as those that have here no continuing city, but by faith, and hope and holy contempt of present things, to go out to Christ without the camp, (Hebrews 13:13-14). (2) It teaches us to rejoice before the Lord our God. Those are the circumcision, Israelites indeed, that always rejoice in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:3). And the more we are taken off from this world the less liable we are to the interruption of our joys.” When Zechariah was ministering in the temple, he received an announcement from God of a coming son. The eighth course of Abia, when Zechariah was ministering, was the week of Sivan 12 to 18 (Killian n.d.). Adding forty weeks for a normal pregnancy reveals that John the Baptist was born on or about Passover (Nisan14) [March 25]. We know six months after John’s conception, Mary conceived Jesus (Luke 1:26-33). Therefore, Jesus would have been conceived six months later in the month of Kislev. Kislev 25 [Dec. 25] is celebrated by Jews today as Hanukkah. Was the “light of the world” conceived on the festival of lights? Starting at Hanukkah, which begins Kislev 25 and continues for eight days, and counting through the nine months of Mary’s pregnancy, one arrives at the approximate time of the birth of Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles (the early fall of the year) [late September or early October]. [Wouldn’t it make sense that the gospel that we preach is supposed to be “according to the scriptures?” (1 Cor. 15)] During the Feast of Tabernacles, God required all male Jews to come to the Temple in Jerusalem. The many pilgrims coming to Jerusalem for the festivals would spill over to the surrounding towns. (Bethlehem is about five miles from Jerusalem). Joseph and Mary were unable to find a room at the inn because of the influx of so many pilgrims. They may have been given shelter in a booth [sukkah], which is built during a seven day period each year accompanying the celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles. Due to the difficulties during travel, it was common for the officials to declare tax time during a temple feast (Luke 2:1). [In an agrarian economy harvest time is when the farmers have monies so they can be taxed!] We know our Messiah was made manifest into a temporary body when He came to earth. Is it possible He also was put in a temporary dwelling upon His birth? The fields would have been dotted with these backyard Sukkoths during this harvest time to temporarily shelter their animals. It may be of some interest that the Hebrew word for “stable” in Genesis 33:17 is translated Succoth, (“And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.”) “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped Him in a manger; [animal feed trough found regularly where cattle are kept] because there was no room for them in the inn.” (Luke 2:7) Joseph and Mary soon took the child and flew to Egypt and remained there until they were told by God that Herod was dead. Joseph and Mary brought the baby Jesus into Jerusalem forty days from his birth for Mary’s purification and the child’s dedication. (According to Torah this had to be done within forty days of the birth of a male child -not doing so is considered a sin) [see Leviticus 12:2-8]. This indicates that Herod died as recorded in the scriptures, within the same forty days, because as long as Herod was alive, they had to be very cautious not to appear at the Temple at Jerusalem. (According to the historian Josephus’ calculations, Herod’s death occurred during Autumn in the fourth year before the Common Era [4 b.c.]) Later in His life, is it possible Jesus celebrated His birthday on a mountain with three of His disciples? In contrast to birthday parties, such as Herod’s where people were killed for entertainment, His would have been a celebration of life. On the Feast of Succoth (Tabernacles), Jesus entertained two special friends that specifically appeared to speak with Him. Moses and Elijah, from centuries past, representatives of the Law (Torah) and the Prophets, appeared on the mount of Transfiguration and talked with Jesus. One disciple (Peter) suggested building three tabernacles (succoths) for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. Could it be because it was required for the festival? Peter may not have understood that these three were fulfilling that which the festival symbolized: saints dwelling in their temporary tabernacle (succoth) of flesh, awaiting their eternal resurrection temples as promised in Bible prophecy. Today, a number of Christians are celebrating Christ’s birth during the Feast of Tabernacles, complete with decorations and even strings of electric lights on their succoths, with music celebrating Jesus’ first Advent. Is there any other way to legitimately show your love for God and that He has made you different from the world?

I have heard, in association with the Sun in the Virgo constellation, that on December 25th, 1 B.C., a star (I believe may have been part of the Virgo constellation) changed direction just above the horizon. This would have been seen south of Jerusalem, in the direction of Bethlehem, just as it would have stopped in the sky and started in the opposite direction. I've heard it theorized that it was at this time the magi were in Jerusalem and would have been guided to Bethlehem. Also, Luke supposedly had a very reliable witness for his information. According to tradition, Luke was with John, whom Jesus gave his mother, Mary, to when he was on the cross. Luke, in turn, would have had Mary as a source for his information. Who better would have that information about Jesus's early life and ministry than his earthly mother?

Brilliant research as usual. I think all the streams coming together like you have done make this the best calculation I have ever seen. As to the place, I think Migdal Eder is the perfect candidate for this. Also the shepherds were told they would find the baby in a manger, they would have had free access to this place. Just out of interest, how far from Bethlehem is Migdal Eder? Just a couple of production notes, the volume seems to be getting lower and lower on the last few videos, I've got it up as loud as possible on my pc and it is hard to hear over some background noise. Since we are talking about Christmas, my wife wonders if the murder of the Two Witnesses occurs at Christmas as Rev 11:10 "And those dwelling on the earth rejoice over them and make merry, and will send gifts to one another, because these two prophets have tormented those dwelling upon the earth." If it was Christmas, it would be a distraction for the world as to what was going on. Of course the prophecy says they do it because they are glad they are dead, but maybe it occurs the first year after the birth of Jesus is officially removed as the reason for Christmas or the celebration/mention of Jesus and his birth is banned.

Scholars say Jesus was born Tishi 1, 1 BC wrongly assume Jesus' ministry was 3 years. Jesus' ministry was 1 year to proclaim "the acceptable YEAR of the LORD." Mt, Mk, Lk all have 1 year ministry, Jn, if translated correctly, agrees. Somebody incorrectly added another Pentecost that was simply "a feast of the Jews," they say it was Pentecost, but Jesus was NOT at the Tempple, which violates the Law. Jesus our Passover Lamb had to be OF THE FIRST YEAR. So scholares agree on Tishri 1 (Sept 11) 3 BC.

Nelson, Zech 14;16 is interesting in that during the millennium all nations will take part of the feast of tabernacles or their rain will stop and the plagues of Egypt will visit them. So if the feast of tabernacles was the birth of Jesus it would make sense for all nations to be inclined to celebrate it. Dec 25th was picked because of the winter solstice. And the drunken orgy that Constantine wanted to celebrate. I have no problem celebrating Jesus birthday on Christmas. My problem is the santa intertwining with Jesus birthday. When a home is filled with santas and Jesus is given no praise then it becomes a pagan holiday. Just my thoughts. Thank you for your work.

The pattern of the Prophetical Fulfillment of the Spring Feasts and the Fall Feasts suggests Jesus as the Lamb of God, was born in the Lambing season in the Spring, along with all the other Sacrificial Lambs, and in the place where the Sacrificial Lambs were born. - This pattern then further suggests that the second coming will then be in the Fall. Notes: to consider. 1) Obviously there was no zero (0) year in the crossover from BC to AD. 2) Further, I have heard that the Jews considered a child to be one year old at the time of their birth, including the 9 months in the womb as the first year. 3) Upto this point in time the best presentation I have heard regarding the Birth of Jesus was given by The Messianic Jewish Rabbi Jonathan Cahn given on the Jim Baker Show available on KZfaq.

At least this another explanation is still in conjunction with another important Jewish Festival which is Feast of Trumpets. This was a good point actually. The only thing i disagree with this video is about the connection with Saturnalia. Saturnalia commonly start at December 17 and lasted only for 4 days. The early Christians however are already celebrating Christmas via prayer and hymns but cannot celebrate publicly from the 1st to the 4th century because they were being persecuted by the Romans. Furthermore, the first Christians were Jews and their festivals meant a lot to them. So they could have celebrated Christmas during important feasts like Hanukkah/Feast of Dedication, Sukkot/Feast of Tabernacles and Rosh Hashana/Feast of Trumpets.

The prophecy in Daniel 9: 24-27 showed the time of Christ's appearance, also in the first instance, so therefore, the disciples of John were 'in expectation', and the year was accurate: 29 CE, when Christ was manifest to Israel, as a thirty-year old. Matthew 3: 1 THIS occurred because the Gregorian calendar which we are using, actually has no year "0". So between 1BCE and 1 CE is one year. [Even though we can see it should be 2 years] That is why Christ was manifest in 29 CE as an adult of 30 years; due to the error of this calendar, created in modern times. Does this error cause confusion? Yes, indeed. But Bible students in modern times have taken this into account, so the times and the seasons, according to prophecy, are accurate.

There is still some gray area in these calculations especially with the starting date of 457 BC. I've kinda figured the 70th week started with the Great sign of Rev. 12: 1-2 over Jerusalem, and then the woman is protected in exodus, but would like to discern more whether it is 3.5 or 7 remaining once the seals/trumpets begin. Perhaps she is taken after the time, times and half a time with the wings of the eagle, and at the rise of the AC, as well as given time to prepare for 1,260 days.

this is correct. jesus would have been born in the migdal eder on 11 september 3 bc, and it is highly likely that both mary and joseph first tried to find accomodations in jerusalem with relatives but since this is the time of the high holy days leading to sukkot, jerusalem would be impossibly full of pilgrims from all over the empire, and have no choice but to trek to bethlehem to find accommodations with other relatives in or near the house of jesse, since they are both of the davidic house.

As for the difference between Jew historian and the Roman historians one year difference can be accounted because of different calendars Now this can be wrong im not a historian but since we still have this issue today so much so they have two calendars i would say it is likely the case even though it is dated two different years they could both be talking about the exact same time might even find in research that there was only different because one was 17-22 days longer then other.

About Virgo: 1) what do you mean Virgo is the only woman constellation? What about Andromeda and her mother Cassiopeia? And then there's the 7 Pleiades sisters. 2) These are Greek constellations, not Jewish. Outside of the letters to the 7 churches, Revelation is a VERY Jewish book, given to a Jewish man, with lots of Jewish imagery, and focus on the people of Israel and therefore if the woman is a constellation, it should be a Jewish one, as the Greek are not universal. In Japan, the aforementioned Pleiades is called Subaru, and Mars (of which they have a different name) is culturally still regarded as a star when it is seen by the naked eye every other year. Polynesian cultures refer to Scorpio's tail as Maui's fish hook.

Why do you think God didn't give us the exact day of Jesus birth? Do you think maybe it had something to do with King Herod wanting to kill Jesus? >>> "When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was filled with rage. Sending orders, he put to death all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the Magi." Matthew 2:16. Divulging this information would be like a general divulging his war tactics to the enemy. This is why such information would not be disclosed, simple common sense. Certainly you aren't saying that there are certain days of the year that we are forbidden to discuss the birth of our Lord and Savior are you??? Since we can't agree on the date are we just supposed to not ever talk about it? God Forbid! Jesus Christ was born, lived, crucified and resurrected on the third day just as it is detailed in scripture. If it wasn't important it wouldn't be included in the Word of God, but it is important and it is included. This is the gospel, the great commission that we are to share with others. You can't share the gospel with others and leave out the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is His Story, History. For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel! 1 Corinthians 9:16. Share Jesus all year long!!!

Jesus began his ministry at 27 AD and died in 30 AD as prophesied by Daniel. The destruction of the temple and Jerusalem in 70 AD was 40 years from the date of the Crucification to parallel Jonah’s 40 prophetic day warning to Nineveh. So I agree with your analysis Nelson. They were in Bethlehem we know that and not Jerusalem. Or is Bethlehem close enough since it is only 2 miles away?

NELSON! GET THIS! IT REGARDS THE ALIGNMENT IN 2017 At the time of the birth of Jupiter the Sun was on Virgos shoulder! Strong's says the Hebrew word for shoulder, Katheph, comes from an unused root meaning 'to clothe'!!! Strong's h3802 - Lexical: כָּתֵף - Transliteration: katheph - Part of Speech: Noun Feminine - Phonetic Spelling: kaw-thafe' - Definition: shoulder, shoulder blade, side. - Origin: From an unused root meaning to clothe; the shoulder (proper, i.e. Upper end of the arm; as being the spot where the garments hang); figuratively, side-piece or lateral projection of anything. - Usage: arm, corner, shoulder(-piece), side, undersetter. By the way ;my guess would be that the sign of jupiter in virgo would have PRECEEDED Jesus' birth by at least a year, making it a prophetic sign.

It seems to be saying that we need to proceed from the earth Adam man into the spiritual which is Christ in us, brought to maturity, the birthing of the " Body" Man child. By perhaps keeping Christ in the flesh His first coming it hinders our progress into the "new man creation ". So Paul is encouraging us to get past Christmas if you will. " now henceforth know we him no more." 2Co 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Col 3:1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Col 3:2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

I am one that believes there is substantial evidence, that has been there for those who want to find it, for a winter, even a Christmas birth. I will go with the timing based on Abijah's temple service, which establishes John's conception and birth.(the Church also holds John's conception to be 9/23. From there, John's birth can be determined to be June 24. The church historically celebrates the Annunciation on 3/25, which is in line with both The Dead sea scroll accounting, and early church fathers. Disregarding tradition should not be lightly disregarded as higher criticism is often wrong. I attach a representative article. (from 30 Days, an Italian Catholic publication n.d.) “December 25 is an historical date,” Professor Tommaso Federici, Professor at the Pontifical Urbanian University and a consultant to two Vatican Congregations, has stressed. In an article in the Osservatore Romano on December 24, he wrote: “December 25 is explained as the ‘Christianization’ of a pagan feast, ‘birth of the Sol Invictus’; or as the symmetrical balance, an aesthetic balance between the winter solstice (Dec. 21-22) and the spring equinox (March 23-24). But a discovery of recent years has shed definitive light on the date of the Lord’s birth. As long ago as 1958, the Israeli scholar Shemaryahu Talmon published an in-depth study on the calendar of the Qumran sect [Ed. based , in part, on Parchment Number 321 - 4 Q 321 - of the Qumran Dead Sea Scrolls, see picture at left], and he reconstructed without the shadow of doubt the order of the sacerdotal rota system for the temple of Jerusalem (1 Chronicles 24, 7-18) in New Testament times. Here the family of Abijah, of which Zechariah was a descendant, father of John the herald and forerunner (Luke 1, 5), was required to officiate twice a year, on the days 8-14 of the third month, and on the days 24-30 of the eighth month. This latter period fell at about the end of September. It is not without reason that the Byzantine calendar celebrated ‘John’s conception’ on September 23 and his birth nine months later, on June 24. The ‘six months’ after the Annunciation established as a liturgical feast on March 25, comes three months before the forerunner’s birth, prelude to the nine months in December: December 25 is a date of history.” In other words, according to the evidence of the Dead Sea Scrolls and Sacred Scripture, our liturgical calendar is accurate: end of September Zechariah “executed his priestly function” (Luke 1:8) according to his class. His wife, Elizabeth, conceived (the Church traditionally holds St. John’s conception to have taken place on 23 September) just as Gabriel said (Luke 1:24) and hid herself away for 5 months. 25 March, the Feast of the Annunciation In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy (Luke 1:26), Gabriel appears to Mary to tell her she is to have a child 24 June, the Feast of John the Baptist Three months after the Annunciation, John the Baptist was born, at a time when the days were becoming shorter 25 December Nine months after the Annunciation, Jesus was born, at a time when the days were becoming longer. To rebut the idea that Jesus had to have been born (rather than conceived) in the Spring because the shepherds were in their fields, which wouldn’t have been so in the Winter, there’s this, from the Jewish convert scholar, Alfred Edersheim, in his “The Life and Times of Jesus The Messiah”: And yet Jewish tradition may here prove both illustrative and helpful. That the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem, was a settled conviction. Equally so, was the belief , that He was to be revealed from Migdal Eder, ‘the tower of the flock.’ This Migdal Eder was not the watchtower for the ordinary flocks which pastured on the barren sheepground beyond Bethlehem, but lay close to the town, on the road to Jerusalem. A passage in the Mishnah leads to the conclusion, that the flocks, which pastured there, were destined for Temple-sacrifices, and, accordingly, that the shepherds, who watched over them, were not ordinary shepherds. The latter were under the ban of Rabbinism, on account of their necessary isolation from religious ordinances, and their manner of life, which rendered strict legal observance unlikely, if not absolutely impossible. The same Mishnaic passage also leads us to infer, that these flocks lay out all the year round, since they are spoken of as in the fields thirty days before the Passover - that is, in the month of February, when in Palestine the average winter rainfall is nearly greatest. Thus, Jewish tradition in some manner apprehended the first revelation of the Messiah from that Migdal Eder, where shepherds watched the Temple-flocks all the year round. It was, then, on that ‘wintry night’ of the 25th of December, that shepherds watched the flocks destined for sacrificial services, in the very place consecrated by tradition as that where the Messiah was to be first revealed.
