People are putting numbers on each other, wanting this societal "quality" man or woman instead of considering whether they actually like them and can be themselves around them and whether he or she cares about them. Good points, but I have to strongly disagree on letting the man lead the conversation. It's a big red flag if a girl just sits there reacting to his questions. Todays women are way too passive which is a big turnoff. A true connection thrives in equal distribution of effort and we men notice that immediately. There's no such thing as feeling overpowered by a girl showing interest.

On your example of “needing space,” I’m glad you figured out that you needed to reach out and contact your guy. His response was exactly as I would expect: you asked for space, and he wasn’t sure precisely “how much space.” I think if you did read back over the messages and step away from all emotion (eg. Read all the messages literally) you would know everything was ok. Also, your note that the masculine supports the “structure” of the relationship is spot on, but when you asked for space and didn’t specify any details (duration), your guy respectfully allowed you to structure how the next few days went.
