my forever favourite hinge audio was a guy answering to "I'll fall for you if..." with "I'm actually looking for a very specific type of girl.." then he's interrupted by the sound of some metal dish falling to the ground and tumbling around for what feels like several minutes until it stops and he coughs slightly and ends with "my bad". and that's the entire audio. I saved it because it's like a work of art to me and I like to admire it occasionally 😂

Reminded me of my (genuinely toxic & fucked up / shitty) ex a bit tbh… 😬. But anyways.. imo, the way he said it made it sound like he was TRYING to make you think he’s cute & apologetic, etc. Like he definitely did/said that intentionally. (Also, he probably didn’t “think of” or consciously decide to do that, but I do think that - even subconsciously, or to some degree / on some kind of level - his intention WAS to make you feel some kind of way / see him a certain way). Which to me just seems kinda disingenuous, or even a little emotionally “manipulative” (for lack of a better term/word). But idk 🤷 maybe I’m wrong or just seeing him in a more negative light, due to him reminding me of my ex .? I don’t think that’s the case, but who knows. A nuance I would add is that everyone is trying to project some positive qualities on a dating app, that's just how the "market" works there. What makes it feel like a red flag to me is the knowledge that you have multiple chances to record whatever you want, and that was the chosen take. That is what makes it clear that the intention was to project an approachable, awkward, and self aware persona, which to me is indeed a bad sign because if those are the best qualities you can think to put forward about yourself I have to wonder why. One could give the benefit of the doubt that it's just a random funny joke, but it feels more likely to be someone who has learned that "self awareness" makes a good mask for behaviors they know are unacceptable or negative.

I'm so mad at myself for not thinking to screen record some of the ish I'd seen on Hinge because I've heard audio that's WAY more cringe than this stuff. One guy's audio was like... he was doing sort of a low, mumbling cartoony creep kind of voice and was saying something to the effect of "hey little kitty, come to daddy, I'm going to eat you up little girl~" and was cackling manically the whole time. I looked at the rest of his profile to see if it was a bad attempt at a joke (or maybe a very niche kink thing???) but I think he was just legitimately crazy.

@@Punkini It depends, we hadn’t defined the relationship. But yes if we were and he didn’t tell all of his partners it was. I have a friend who is poly and talks about how open their communication is so I don’t think he fully understood what that kind of relationship entailed.

This would have been an interesting feature to have back when I was on dating apps, because I remember being shocked by how gentle and kind my partner’s voice was when we first FaceTimed. It definitely changed my perspective of the text chats we’d had up to that point (for the better)
