Simply not true IMO. Money is essential much like food, water but it's not everything. True fulfilment comes from within. A lot of it comes down to the Human mind, the most complex, adaptable known object in the Universe and how we are made to forget its power.

No such thing as class these days. There are tradesman I know who've been able to buy a house at the age of 23 whilst silver spoons who consider themselves "middle class" struggle to get on the housing ladder after years at uni and working in admin roles/ teaching.
@elio6037
@elio6037 3 жыл бұрын
Not true. Although class has shifted completely in the UK and what we deem as working, middle and upper class has changed and counties to do so we still have a working a middle and an upper class. They just look different today. For example owning your own home is something many middle class people really struggle to achieve like you said, where a few decades ago they would have been on the property ladder well before 30. But home ownership isn't the only consideration. Income inequality is worse now than it was then, levels of poverty are rising year on year and most working class people worry about the same shit they always have. Figuring out how to pay the rent and out food on the table. Sure that working class might look different. They might no longer be made up of those traditional working class trades, and be full of people who work in retail, customer service, hospitality and care. Either way as long as there are a small number of people with a lot and a large number of people with less or in some cases close for nothing there will be a thriving class system in the UK.

It is money....isn't.... Yeah. A cheap Ryanair flight, air bnb/hotel in a country that has many competitively priced hotels, a bicycle, an ice cream. Probably the one comment that is disconnected from reality. It is not a lot of money. But the author wanted to play with redundant stereotypes. It is as if the author has personal laziness, that needs manifestation.

Wow. They talk to each other like robots. There is not a lot of genuineness coming across. She seems quite condescending. It's an odd couple. It's also weird that they keep stating things. It's like they aren't talking to one another but making statements to each other another. It's weird. It's very PC. "I think you have a right to", "You know things are..." "Well, in that case, perhaps.." It's like a business meeting.

0:29 Connell's comment about money makes it obvious that he CLEARLY doesn't understand how the world really works. Judging by the support for socialism in the comments, many of you need to grow up too. What truly matters is VALUE, not money. If you make things that others value, then they pay you for it. Money is just a medium to record value and exchange it without bartering. The more value you bring to others, the more you get in return. At least, that's how things work in a world where people are allowed to make and trade things freely. Socialism and Communism killed millions of people in the 20th century, yet all you kids glorify it as some utopia. You're all nuts, and you need to read some history. Better yet, let the real world hit you in the head a few times.

Great News. Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones ‘splits from boyfriend Tom Varey’: About time too! Well done Daisy. The best decision of your life apart, that is, from becoming a superb actress. You have more talent in your little finger than the drip has in whole of his pathetic frame. You're just too beautiful. He's not even in your class. You'll never regret dropping that drip! The world is now your oyster.

Only in Britain would there be a series with this stupid title, whilst trying to come across as 'sophisticated'. What is this obsession with class and why is it so weird to date somebody richer or poorer than you? Leave 1890 in 1890.

It was relevant bc his mom worked for her significantly wealthier family. It was this dynamic they'd never discussed before in their relationship. It's not that it was a taboo thing, nobody cared about that and its not talked of again. This particular episode is just showing how a vacation to Italy is normal for Marianne but super thrilling for Connell. Which leads to this scene, and the purpose is to acknowledge that although they are the same in many ways and basically grew up near one another, the amount of money you have does really shape your perspective on life.

I wouldn't say it attempts to seem sophisticated. It depicts two adults from vastly different spheres of life having an honest conversation about how money has changed Connell's situation so drastically. And a major point of the show is that is ISN'T weird, only made to seem that way by Marianne's toxic family and Connell's social anxiety. Don't try to criticise something you've never seen. And like everyone else has mentioned, the profundity of the conversation is compounded by the context; a time when socioeconomic divisions are more apparent than ever. You can pretend everyone is equal all you like, but this isn't and will never be the case.
