The bells are so awakening, enchanting and give beauty to this piece. It is like waltzing so full of echoes of the bells. Sounding and sounding in accord with piece and the conductor is hypotonic, drowning it it's magnificence. .

On the initial chorale section, I felt that there wasn't the driving force like I've heard in another recording of this piece. Not saying the execution was terrible, because I've listen to less impressive interpretations. My favorite recording up to date would have to be by Jerry Junkin's band. The initial chorale is just outstanding with THE best tenor sax execution amongst the dozens of recordings of this piece I've heard. It really gave a kind of emotion on such a degree that I've yet heard on different recordings. The contrabassoon gave a meaningful, generous depth in the chorale, adding a kind of warmth and darkness to it. The transition into the next section is very tasteful. The entrance of the trumpets gave a nice contrast from the initial statement, introducing the intruding darkness that continues to grow throughout the piece. The euphoniums give such power with the response to the bell tones. The trombone glisses (being a trombonist, the very first gliss is not an easy one to execute) were spectacularly spot on and help transition the moving lines. In the next section, the bassoon, tenor sax, guitar, (harp I believe), and string bass chamber group are incredible. The strings DEFINITELY become a voice in the section, rather than being drowned out by the wind sounds. There's just so much to comment on in there, from top to bottom, so I'll just drop the link lol Enjoy! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jZp-m7upudmXj2Q.html

I'm surprised the chime players double stroked the cathedral bell part at the end there. For how loud the band is I would have stuck with single stroking each note so the cathedral bell part would have more presence especially from the second chime part which is lower in pitch and harder to cut through the ensemble. Despite that, this is probably the best recording I have heard of this.

+Cobrun Sells probably an issue with tempo, easier to double stroke at that speed, sounds smoother, less jarring.

As a percussionist who played that part (in the University of the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble, in case you were curious as to what group played it,) I can assure you the idea of singling those is easier said than done. In this recording it's kind of hard to hear everything they're playing but at faster tempos it's not so easy to single those. That said, we had each of the chimes stations in the front of the band on either side vs the back, and it was still hard for the audience to hear those runs when there's so much low brass blowing out their chops at the end. Tell you what though, that piece is fun to play!

Andrew Cardwell Single stroking the chime part is easy. I've played this as well. And I didn't miss a beat.

I'm glad you found it easy. I didn't like the sound of singles over doubles; the doubles gave me more of the sensation of actual bells sounding in regards to second stroke and echo effect. Strong enough doubles will cut through just fine.

Andrew Cardwell True, but strong doubles can also be detrimental to the wrists, especially if the mallets are heavy. And, next time I play it I'll have try quieter resounding offbeat notes just as you mention. Thanks for the idea.

I’m doing a school project for this and can someone tell me why you think or don’t think the title of the song goes with the piece

The piece seems to have a real dark and heavy feel, which seems odd since it was dedicated to Leopold Stokowski. I would think that a piece written as a dedication would be light and slow, or just have a happier feeling.

Why is the Marine playing the guitar wearing a less decorated uniform than the rest of the band?

Retired Army Bandsmen here. Percussionists, Sousaphone players and others like guitar players often leave off their ribbons so they are not damaged by the straps and harnesses they perform in.

LeadTrumpet2010 you should. Half of those folks in that band have Master’s and Doctorates in performance. They are playing exactly how the conductor wanted them to. Your comment has no validity whatsoever.
