This pretty much summarizes my childhood experience with the scene. I am in my late 30s now, saw the movie at a time when VHS was a thing - have two older brothers, I was at the age of your daughter. There was noone to film me, but I was just lost there. It is so strange how generation after generation experience this, esp. at an age you start to understand things, or do you, until you see this scene?

This is why you NEVER show someone episodes 1-3 first. You will totally lose one of the biggest shockers in movie history. I remember being a kid seeing this for the first time. I was totally not expecting that. Even my father, who never gets surprised in movies, was shocked.
@aeonversestudios012 жыл бұрын
The trick is getting around the fact that it's basically common knowledge now, most people who haven't seen the films still know that Vader is Luke's father
@vinceA37482 жыл бұрын
@@aeonversestudios01 For the most part, yes. It's unfortunate too. For those of us who first saw it, when first released in the theaters, it was a complete shocker. You could hear the crowd reaction of people gasping. I'll never forget my father's reaction. It was so totally rare for him to be surprised at anything in the movies, but this one totally shocked him.
@aeonversestudios012 жыл бұрын
@@vinceA3748 I unfortunately didn't have that added benefit. I saw the Phantom Menace in theaters at the age of 5, after which my mother openly explained that young Anakin Skywalker was Darth Vader, and that he was Luke's father
@mane422 жыл бұрын
@@vinceA3748 I wish I was lucky enough to even be born early enough to be able to see the movies in theatres, but I was born 26 years too late. The best I got was my parents showing my sister and me the original trilogy after years of playing lego star wars the complete saga, so the plot twist didn't surprise me. If I ever have kids in the distant future, I'm showing them the movies, then the lego games.
@vinceA37482 жыл бұрын
@@mane42 Going to see this movie back then was an event. We went opening day, at the Orange Domes, and every single showing was sold out, except one. That started at 1:30am in the morning. We decided to go the next day instead. We barely got in to see it. It was so exciting.

Back in 1980 when ESB first came out, I was driving a school bus in the Chicago suburbs, three routes with different grade levels. For THREE DAYS, Empire was ALL my kids talked about. "Is Vader really his father?" "Noooo!" "It's a trick!" "Who is the 'other one'?" It was fascinating to hear them talk, and so much fun to join in. Unfortunately, we had to wait three years to learn that, yes, it was true.
