Strangely, this record had more effect on me than all the rest of the Kinks’ incredible oeuvre. It had a poignancy that struck me as heartbreaking and the female refrain was glorious. I was 9 at the time.

Nothing to do with Stan Laurel. Ray Davis said he wrote it. About a Repetitive time in his life. To much work and Alcohol then waking up one morning. In a room full of drunken people Stepping over him and he hadnt a clue where he was.

Classic record and an all time fave of mine and a monster UK hit. Very good B side too. Dave also had another solo single hit here in The UK “Susanna’s Still Alive” another good un. Not as good as this but still very good. “Lincoln County” followed this and again it was very good but didn’t trouble the UK Singles Charts. Yours in Kinks-and Dave’s solo slots as well. Great outfit and Ray was an inspiration. Chris 🎼

A Brit hit that charted and revived a renewed interest in the Kinks. Haunting melody that didn't get airplay in the US - Perhaps due to references to alcohol.
@seltaeb3302

No, there's plenty songs America about alcohol, for starters Sinatra & Dean Martin & loads more. Just sometimes happens that's all as it sometimes did in UK charts.

At 2:16 and 2:33, who were Dave's fingers going up to? Ray maybe? For non-UK viewers, two fingers like that is a very rude gesture (not to be confused with V for Victory, which is palm outward; with the back of the hand, it's equivalent to the US middle finger salute). The German audience wouldn't have recognised it, nor the producers since they let it through.
