When I was 20 years old, a good friend of mine died. He was only 22. This song came on while I was driving to his funeral. It really spoke to me, and 20 years later it still brings me to tears and brings me right back to that very moment.

I will ashamedly say that I always wrote this song off until about a year ago. now it is one of my favorites. Just hits different. Funny how life events can change the thoughts you have about a song.

Love it when that happens. That's been the case for a few DMB songs over the years and recently with some Elbow songs - I kinda skipped over them and didn't really connect at first, but then life has this way of carving out just the right puzzle piece shape and the song comes to visit again and seems to fit just right this time round.

What a remedy to cynicism and despair. They grab hold sometimes and the world seems to shrink and get so prickly from all directions, or, worse, like the Nothing in Neverending Story: that absence that eats away at the imagination and life itself. This song puts the light back in my hands and reminds me to carry it forward. And reminds me to just go a little crazy now and then, and laugh it all back into shape.

I grew up Catholic. I got sick of the shame & fear & being possessed (Exorcist at age 6)… I gave up the magical thinking & was finally able to sleep at night with no fear. I became fixated & obsessed with the sciences, and it became the foundational framework of my deep spirituality… No faith needed. It’s right there in front of my face. it’s incomprehensible, and it’s beyond me. There are things that exist that we can’t possibly dream of or comprehend. It’s beyond God. It encompasses everything that is, and that can ever be. So is this not enough staring down at the ground?

Say what you will about Boyd but the guy could play the shit out of that violin. He’s one of the best in the industry (when he wasn’t wasted)

@@jakeaugust1542 ...he was a great showman and had moments of brilliance, but he was absolutely not some top tier violin player. All his solos sound the same, he plays in one position pretty much all the time and quite often is timing and feel is way off. Again, there are some incredible moments from him, but there are far 'better' violinists out there.

@@adammarshall978 his little solo from lie in our graves always energizes, he makes that song great. I do agree that his violin solos were typically just noise to me. That's kinda how I feel about tim Reynolds as well. He's incredibly refined and creative in the studio, but when he improvises on the electric guitar live...he ruins a lot of songs

@Steve Stipitlow think it has more to do with wanting to evolve the bands sound instead of just replacing a violinist. Listen to dave over the years starting from the 90s and you will hear how much the sound has changed. You have to do that to stay so relevant for that many years straight if you want to keep drawing crowds

Miss Boyd's opening... (Wow, that reads so horribly, I never got on his Bus!) But yeah, Rashawn sounds cute but that's a Violin short there... Rather not hear it at all...
