Founder of The Source Magazine, Dave Mays, sat down with VladTV to detail his life and career. Mays talked about his upbringing before making the decision to enroll at Harvard University. He also described how he got into Hip Hop and the early beginnings of The Source. Mays explained how he and Benzino formed a partnership as well as their quest to make The Source a national publication. He talked about his role at the publication and its popularity within the rap world before offering his thoughts on Suge Knight's infamous speech at the 1995 Source Awards.
Despite experiencing a peak in the early 2000s, the dot-com bubble caused the magazine to start losing money and the publication was being investigated by the FBI. Mays also described how Benzino's beef with Eminem damaged the credibility of The Source and broke down Kim Osario's lawsuit against the company. Mays explained why he and Benzino were forced out of the magazine and why it was ultimately sold. Check out the above clip to interview to hear about Dave Mays' current projects.

He seems like a very interesting guy. They should have gotten more into his parents and upbringing, because he was apparently raised by and around some interesting people to have a lawn mowing business back in middle school. I'm from Boston and everything he said about the city at that time is true. I think his mistake was linking up with Benzino. He is apparently a loyal guy, but he got talked into going a route he shouldn't have gone. Everything they were saying about Eminem is true, and it needed to be exposed. But, the way they did it, should have been different. Benzino was trying to make a career off that, because nothing else got him the notoriety he wanted at that time. They ruined The Source to gamble on Benzino's music career. I still have that issue that exposed Eminem as a racist. It is a respectable issue and controversial, but the same points could have been made without Benzino involved. The Source needs to come back, even if it's under another name. Dave should have studied business at Harvard and went to his classes. He could have avoided a lot of the pitfalls. He is NOT who I envisioned all these years that I heard The Source was owned by a Harvard educated white dude. Dave has some flavor. Respect!

The source fucked up a few times on the album ratings. Ready to die needed to be a Classic, Da chronic should’ve been a classic, reasonable doubt and ob4cl as well
@mutedmutiny9542
@mutedmutiny9542 2 жыл бұрын
That’s the thing though - those albums weren’t regarded as instant classics when they first came out. They were all really well received albums but you can’t really call something an immediate classic unless it’s something so special, like Illmatic. That’s why their ratings were so meaningful, almost no one got 5 mics and it was a huge deal when it happened. I will point out though that all the albums you mentioned were reevaluated and re-scored as 5 mic albums, which they clearly are now it just wasn’t obvious when they were first released.

C'mon man, we all love to look back on Reasonable Doubt with rose colored glasses, but outside of NY nobody was checking for Jay-Z in 96. I didn't know who Jay was until Pac dissed him and I'm a hip hop head.
@Ramble79
@Ramble79 2 жыл бұрын
@@mutedmutiny9542 I agree, but Da Chronic and Ready to Die were highly anticipated and special albums at the tjme. Da Chronic reintroduced Dre as a solo artist and producer. The streets and the industry were waiting for Big to drop. I remember the source knocked a half a mic because of the jodeci skit.
@Ramble79
@Ramble79 2 жыл бұрын
@@zl5464 I agree about Jay’s popularity outside of NY. It was a tough time for new artists to drop. Still the lyrics and the sound were on point from beginning to end. Jay’s second albums was far from a classic he had the softmore jynx.
@mutedmutiny9542
@mutedmutiny9542 2 жыл бұрын
@@Ramble79 I agree and I think both albums got either 4 or 4.5 mics on release, which was still a very strong review back then. 4 or above was rare and you could bet on any album above 4 mics being really really strong. That is why when Made Men (Benzino’s project after RSO) got 4.5 mics - not 5 like some people say - that was pretty shocking and in some ways a scandal. Pretty much everyone knew it wasn’t deserving of that score and wasn’t on par with other 4.5 albums.

Benzino never got 5 mics. It was his Made Men project after RSO and they got 4.5, not 5 - but even giving them that was shocking and undeserved. Even they knew they couldn’t give them 5 though, that would have completely ruined all their credibility instantly. That almost happened anyway and it wasn’t even 5 mics. That was a big conflict of interest to have a hip hop artist as a partner in the magazine. That was the root of the end. Also, him saying Elvis was used to cut out black folks from the music business is a false narrative, in fact, it's complete billsh*t. Elvis was very influential in helping explode the music scene along with other black and white artists. I'm not sure how this narrative got started, if it was Chuck D and public enemies lyric about Elvis, although Chuck has apologized to some degree about putting Elvis in that lyric. Do the research, learn Elvis' life, look at what his black peers have to say about it all, then Dave Mays can get back to me on his false belief. Also, I'm not sure if Dave has learned this yet, the Harvard grad he is, but he's white. He seems to think otherwise by the way he portrays himself.

Bro, Elvis has a song called "The Ghetto" just so you know. I do think that Chuck D came up with that shit that Elvis stole Rock-N-Roll from Blacks, which was just false, but EVERYBODY has anecdotal shit about race anyways in my experience.

He seems cool, but yeah, I felt like he thinks he thinks he is black and acts like he never heard of Rolling Stone magazine. Dang, I knew Rolling Stone Magazine, and I am much younger, and he seems to put down rock music passively, and I know folks in the hood like some rock music. I feel like he wants to win black folks over.. I don't think he is a bad guy, though, but you don't have to put other music down and to give credit to other good styles of music.
