Dave Moltrup is the most amazing steel mill modeler I have ever had the pleasure to meet. His HO scale layout depicts with incredible detail and accuracy multiple steel mill activity and railroad operations specifically tailored to serve them. The layout is so intense it took 2 videos to cover all of his operations. Part 1 introduces us to Dave as he explains the layout and gives us detailed explanations of what is going on in each area. Part 2 will cover even more mills and manufacturing areas depicted on this fabulous layout not shown in part 1.

This is miraculous. My great grandfather and many other Slovak relatives worked at Youngstown Steel and Tube after immigrating here from Eastern Europe. It's so sad to think that very few if any young people today would have any interest whatsoever in viewing and appreciating this incredible model. The mid-west steel mills were responsible for so much of our nation's history. In my opinion, this exhibit is worthy of permanent display space in the Smithsonian Institution.

I worked with Dave in a previous life as professional firefighters. I saw his attention to detail throughout his career, so it’s no surprise. It carries over to a hobby, which is dear to his heart.

This is fantastic but reminds me why I shouldn't model steel mills! What an intense industry! So neat, great modeling.

I had a co-worker who worked in Ambridge (American Bridge Co.) PA in 1950. At the time, they were making Bailey Bridges for shipment overseas. He told of times at night when Jones & Loughlin (sp?) would be pouring molten steel and how it was so bright that you could read the newspaper on your front porch across the river from it. What a fantastic rendition of this legacy industry you've created there!

My absolute favorite part of this video was early on when he said while talking about the steel mill, he pointed to a little sign on the crane and stated, "My wife made that for me!" How cute. I could melt. Where are these kind of women?

I could be wrong but on the top of the cold roll mill there are 3 roof vents. They look like the bottoms of some old painters polls cut off that I've had years ago. If that is what they are that's genius, love seeing all the hand built structures.

In the photo of Beaver Falls PA towards the end of the video. THE Dam that was shown, still has the causeway at the west side, where they still produce electricity. I want there in 2019 to inspect their overhead cranes. The stone in the causeway has carvings from the early 1800s . Beaver falls is a cool city

I had the pleasure of working with the late Paul Schneider in filming the Kalmbach video about steel mills and railroading and the realism in your models transported me back to our tours. It was always the sheer size and accompanying sounds and smells that just made everything almost surreal. Bless you for your skills time and patience to capture an essential industry

21:55 wonderfull site! My father used to work for Hoogovens Royal Dutch Steel & Iron Company, later Corus, Hoesch and now Tara Steel. I like to rebuild some simplified parts of the plant due to lack of space in HO scale in a medium size sleepingroom. I have a GM shunter and a lot of Shimmns(coils) for transport to the customer.

Love your layout, (and your dog)! I grew up in Youngstown, I was born around the same time as Gateway Yard. Where in the heck did you find that Bliss roller, Pollock cars and SOHIO truck? You are an incredible craftsman, and it is fascinating how you know everything about this mill. Regarding the "flare", when we were kids, dad would drive by the Campbell Works at night, and mom would always point out the "cigar lighter", (her name for the flare). Can't believe Walthers has a Hulett kit, amazing. Beaver Falls is a great town, home of Donny Iris. Your knowledge of steel making is amazing, enjoyed the video, thanks.
