They had to stop buys because the clearing house DTC was requiring Robinhood to cover the total cost of all of their outstanding buys on the stock. They did not havd that kind of capital to do that. Thus they had to restrict trading.

Actually, other stocks were down considerably too during the time GameStop stocks were unavailable. They literally didn't have the money. Also, Robinhood needs to buy a number of stocks through a middle man who prevented them from buying any more. Learn about the market b4 u cry about it.

It's refreshing to see someone who actually knows what they're talking about. I feel for Robinhood because it was ultimately DTC/DTCC who raised the requirements, and literally no one even talks about that because it would just go over most peoples' heads anyway. However, I do understand DTC's reasoning. A stock as volatile as GME poses a huge risk to their operations as well. If somehow this situation took them down, the counter-party risk could damage the entire market.
