The AW 15 was one of my favorite laptops last year. I love the new thinner design - Especially those lights on the side. Anyone thinking of picking this up?

I don't get why people call it ugly I find it really cool but the colour on the top I got to say it's not that good but the build quality is great and also the bezels are big but the cooling is 👍

Just a heads up, the 15 R3 i7-6700HQ / 1060 GTX model is prone to overheating. This was a prevalent issue in October/November/December of 2016. Alienware seemed to acknowledge the issue and claims to have fixed it for models produced after December 6th, 2016. I just got my 15 R3 on January 13th, 2017, and right out of the box I was experiencing 100 degree temps across at least three cores. The overheating issue seems to STILL be relevant. People say repasting the heat sink with liquid metal will net average temps up to 25-30 degrees cooler, but this is a very complicated process for less PC savvy consumers. I haven't done the repaste yet, but in order to cut down on the temps I have to heavily regulate my CPU. Not only am I undervolting, but I've also disabled the turbo feature that comes with the Intel chips, and reduced the overall performance by 20%. These changes keep the temperatures at a respectable 45-50 degrees Celsius under light load or idling, and 75-85 degrees while gaming. Dell customer service will tell you that 100 degree temperatures are "normal" but they aren't fooling NOBODY. Of course laptops will run hotter than desktops, especially a gaming spec laptop, but 100 degree temps should never be considered "normal." I've heard that the Intel chips are capable of running at 100 degree temps for several years, so it might not be that big of an issue but the industry standard seems to be 25 degrees lower near 85 degrees Celsius. Not to mention, with that much heat in such close proximity to other components, I'd worry that other things might fail prematurely because of the heat. Just a heads up for anyone looking to get the bargain i7-6700HQ/1060 GTX model.

Why doesn't Alienware have an OLED option for the 15 and 17 like they do with the 13?

I subscribed last night for a couple reasons: you have a wide variety of reviews, from Dell or Lenovo, to Apple and Razer. I also find your videos to be "no none-sense", and simple to follow along with. Not sure if you'll get this comment or not, but wanted to give you some major props. Keep up the good work! Hi Dave! Great video. I was wondering what your top 3 15.6 inch 1060 or 1070 series laptops would be at this point? If you could only have one , which would it be and in which configuration? Also you said 6 hours of battery life? Does this laptop have a 120 refresh rate and g-synch? All of the other laptops with a 1060 or 1070 seem to have 2-3 hours of battery life, and non gaming batter life does matter to me as I plan on using it for general typing and media consumption as well as gaming. Hey Dave, since this laptop has both a usb c thunderbolt and the alienware proprietary port, why don't you try to compare the performance of using the razer core against the alienware graphics amplifier? Hahaha I think it would be a good video

So I have the R3, and I'm going to give my opinion on it. It is a very sturdy laptop, despite the weight issues of the device. For me I don't mind at all, I'm used to carrying heavy stuff around, plus I used my Surface Book when I need to. The hinge forward design is nice in the sense that it vents a lot better. It's better to go for a more bulky laptop that is able to vent air better than one that is thin and doesn't have a lot of ventilation and therefore heats way too easily. Plus, the ability to upgrade nearly everything in this is a plus for me. I set mine up to use the Alienware AW988 Headset, and the AW788 Mouse, which unfortunately takes up both USB ports. Out of all the ports on the back, I wish they would have fit one more USB on there. But as mentioned, I only really need the two, plus I can always run my headset through the headphone port instead if I need another USB, but that situation hasn't come up yet. Fan noise can get to be really loud, especially when playing Overwatch (which is what I mainly use mine for), which doesn't seem to mind my friend who I play with in the same room (since he as well uses headphones). But without the headphones, it can be a bit loud, but can still be drowned out if you turn up the volume to around 70. I do notice a bit of the heat coming through the keys themselves, and not a whole lot from the palm rests. It's nothing scathing, though keep in mind. And of course, a little bit coming from the bottom of the laptop itself. I bought it since I usually go to hang out with my friend, or they would have to bring their desktop over. I'd rather just bring over a laptop instead of risking damage to the desktop on travel. Paired with the Vindicator Backpack, I find traveling with it no problem at all. Slips right in, nice and snug. Specs in this rig are an i7 7th Gen, 16gb of RAM, a 1 TB HDD and a GTX 1060 graphics card, which for me is perfect for the games I play (mainly Overwatch). I also bought this refurbished, but I haven't had any problems with it out of the ordinary. I plan on adding some Solid State Drives for storage and swapping out the boot drive. However, I did notice that the AlienFX software that allows you to change the lighting effects are a bit buggy. Even with adjusting the speeds of the lights, it changes colors a little too slow and the only way to fix this is pressing the Macro option key. Waiting on Dell to make a patch for this. In terms of looks, I really do dig the alien theme overall with the laptop, but I don't like the rubber-like material they have on the palm rest, which despite being nice to the touch is a finger print magnet (and one that is a bit hard to clean). I just slapped a DBrand skin on here, and it's looking a lot better. Overall, this is a nice laptop, despite the premium price. I mean, I've wanted one since I was a kid, so here I am in my adult years with one and it was worth every penny I spent on it. But yeah, this is my two cents on it. :)

Dear Dave - Based on your always awesome review I have gone out and purchased one of these. It was a toss up between this and the gorgeous Razer Blade... I'm afraid the specs on this just won out. It'll mainly be a desktop replacement but I also ordered a 15" backpack for carrying it around... 6 hours seems pretty good for a laptop with a gtx1070, great for portable work i guess, did you test the battery hours for work, or for gaming (if its actually 6hrs when gaming, with the full performance mode, this will be the best laptop for gaming on battery, but i doubt my fantasies can be true)

Hi David, I like your reviews a lot! Straght to the point, no nonsense, very easy to follow. I also like that you compare many of the features to the MacBook Pro, as that has been a benchmark for professional users for many years. As many other users of design software and photo editing I am also looking into performance laptops with better screen quality (wider gamut) ther than apples overprices macbooks. Could you please make a comparison video of the top gaming/performance laptops based on screen quality? Ranking them based on color gamut and accuracy before/after calibration would be great as a buying guide for users who also use gaming notebooks as design workstations.

If I was in the market for a laptop, I would buy this one. I've always used desktop computers, and have built them myself for 8 years. This laptop has it all, the thermal management is wondrous, the style and apparent durability of the case ooze quality and precise design parameters. Alienware has truly evolved in recent years, they were laughable pits of money when they started out. It's definitely got my brain thinking of selling my desktop in the future and replacing it with this. Thanks for the great review Dave, you always do a superb job at covering all the pros and cons in a concise yet accurately detailed manner of the hardware you showcase on your channel!

Hi guys! I have this laptop for 6 months (i7 7820HQ, gtx1070, full hd 15inch screen). What can I say? DON'T BUY IT!!! It's a real crap! ALWAYS hot (I made re-pasting with liquid metal). When it wakes after 'sleep' mode - often sound doesn't work. In IE (my main browser) audio driver doesn't work in 90% and sound becomes awful. You can't play in games without cooling pad because it (as I said before) is always hot. And in games it just dies due to thermal throttling. I'm gonna sell this crap. And I sincerely advice to NOT to buy it... it doesn't cost that money (I bought it from DELL's official shop) and weight doesn't bring any benefit ... very bad device. Battery wear after 6 month of careful usage is 21%... twenty one percent... my prev MSI had 17% after 2 years of usage... So only disappointments, nothing more

I just want to say that I totally love your videos dude, and you sold me on this! I've had my Alienware 15" R3 for a few months now and I love it. I'm picking up an HTC Vive soon, can't wait to use it with it. Best gaming laptop I have ever owned, I use it more than my desktop, to the point where I sold my tower and now just rambo the Alienware. It's a beast!

Hey man I love your reviews, super clean editing and presentation. I know specs on laptops change all the time, but since you can now get essentially all the same specs on the 15 as you can on the 17, including a GTX 1080, 32 GB's DDR4 RAM, the same overclocked i7 processor as the alienware 17 and 3 TB of storage and all the same specs as the top end 17 for actually a little cheaper in what seems to be a quieter laptop that's half the weight. There's no way your not sacrificing some heat dispersion but it's already really good at that and either one is still a $4,000 laptop at the end of the day but which one would you pick if you were spending the money? I'm leaning more towards the 15 because it's about half the weight and can have the same specs and I have to carry it to college, but if I'm missing something here or giving up some major performance other than a numpad I'd definitely like to know and I greatly appreciate your help. I'll carry the 10 pound laptop if there's serious performance increase though, I'd rather actually. I say this because I plan on using this in college on virtual machines, casual gaming and photo and video editing when I have the time to learn more.

The hinge design is awesome until you try to buy a carrying case for it that's not from alienware. 15 inch won't fit and 17 inch is too big

Hey, another review said battery life depends on the display option. The option that uses the built in graphics card and the dedicated graphics card (based on user selection of a switch) gets six hours, otherwise, it's about three hours. Would be great if it has the same OLED touch screen that the 13 inch has, why didn't it? Thanks a lot, Dave!

Dear Dave, awesome reviews! I have a few questions, to which you might know the answer. Are the three M.2 slots all PCI Express 3.0 x4? And do they scale back in PCI Express lanes, when connecting an AlienWare Graphics Amplifier? I hope you can help! I cant find the answer anywere :(
