This is another video in my series “Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the village of Greywell (5 miles East of Basingstoke) and explore the surrounding area.
My 4.5 mile (approx) circular route starts at St Mary's church in Greywell and initially I wander through the village which is full of pretty houses & cottages. Just beyond the Fox & Goose pub, I join the tow path of the old Basingstoke canal at the mouth of the Greywell tunnel (home to one of the largest Winter roosts of bats in the UK).
I follow the canal, crossing over the River Whitewater, until I come across the remains of Odiham Castle where I take time to explore!
I continue along beside the canal until I get to a lift bridge where I cross over to the the Southern side of the waterway before heading across some beautiful meadows. Shortly after, I enter the Greywell Moors Nature reserve which is known for sedges, rushes, mosses & liverworts.
Eventually my route takes me on a North Easterly direction, past Greywell Mill and along a path on the banks of the river back to my original starting point at the church.

So beautiful, Dave. Loved all the meadows with the sweet and saucy buttercups. And it's always a delight to see the old cottages and castles. Thanks again for sharing your walks with us. A Happy September 2023 to you from Pennsylvania, up in the mountains where the goldenrod is starting to bloom - a harbinger of fall.

Once a really nice walk Dave and it brought back old memories. When I joined Souther Television from ITN in 1973 shortly afterwards I was invited to go out one Saturday morning with the crew to film down the Greywell Tunnel which they were trying to restore. We were the first and only people I believe that were allowed to go down it and if I remember we were joined by the Mayor. We went down by boat with I think two men legging it along the wall until we arrived at the blockage caused by the collapse. The water in those days was clear and I certainly do not remember much weed. The odd thing though was the fish down the end of the tunnel were white presumably due to the lack of sunlight. I have ever since then had it on my list to make a programme for my KZfaq Channel on the canal but seeing it now it does seem to be in need of a lot of loving care.

That must have been great exploring inside the tunnel, Dave. The canal becomes navigable about 500m East of the tunnel and it is clear and well maintained from there on. I guess the section close to the tunnel is deliberately left in that state to prevent folk from disturbing the bats. Thanks again for watching.

Foolishly I tried this walk with a pram last week(January). Basingstoke canal was a bit of a mud bath, and trying to return on the other side was a wet muddy disaster. Even without a pram it wouldn't have been possible. Just a heads up for people thinking of doing it in the winter, don't try and return the others side of the canal. Still worth it for the castle, the roaming Highland cows and the fantastic Fox and Goose pub in Greywell. Thanks again.

Ah yes - trying to avoid mud anywhere this time of year can certainly be a challenge!

Wow Dave, I worked as a Project manager for a computer network company out of Greywell in the 90's, although i live in Northamptonshire. I had many a pint in the Fox and Goose until the company moved to Bramley near Reading. Thank you for sharing, Paul 👌👌

Thank you Dave. I think it’s due to all the beach combing on pebbles, hunting for sea glass! 🥴
