Pastel Portrait Tutorial: *How I achieve the skin tones*. In this Narrated video of my beautiful Auntie Jean I share with you my techniques and tip on how I achieve the skin tones. I mainly use use three primaries colours and complimentary colours. Take a look to find out more. This is Part 1.
Loving painting My mum's sister Auntie Jean in Pastels, I was hearing her awesome Yorkshire accent in my awareness whilst I was working. Such a wonderful beautiful soul Auntie Jean has. Always helping people... putting others first before herself.

Here is a list of Caran d ache rich pastel pencils colours I use: numbers...
Primary colours...
Reds... 788-060, 080
Yellows... 788- 240, 530, 035
Blue... 788- 145
Orange 788-052
Purple 788-099
Green 788-719
Rich colours I sometime use for the bright areas in the skin tones...
788- 541, 542, 871, 581.
Carbothello pencils are... green 1400/585, red... 305, orange, 221, lemon yellow 205, yellow ochre 685 and white 100. I don't use this brand's blues as the lightfastness is very poor. so I use Conti a Paris ones for them,... No10, No 06, No 22 and No46. Also the purple red for the deep shadows ... No19
If you can afford it I would recommend buying the sets as the extra colours would be very useful for clothes and backgrounds and can work out cheaper per pencil... affiliate links below.

Dave I really love your portraits of painting older people they are breathtaking and yes I’m old too. You give us the motivation needed to become better artists. Your matters, your methods, style, skills, patience, and understanding is fantastic. You are truly becoming one of my most absolutely favorite professional artist. My God, the way you explain what you do and how you do it is so great. I find it little hard to understand the values and complementary colors. I’m ok with black and white portraits, but very poor on colors. Your voice is so relaxing and soothing. It makes you want to wake up and go to sleep with a pencil in your hand. Lol 😂

Really appreciate you taking the time Patricia in letting me know how my videos come across... means the world to me that you love my technique and pointers so much. That was funny about going to bed with a pencil in your hand... I did once go to bed with a pencil behind my ear once lol. To understand how I use the primary and secondary colours check out my video beginners guide to portraiture. Here is a link: 💕🙏 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bb93qbCLkrSUmqs.html

I loved your colour descriptions so much I watched this video twice. I'm sure I will go back to this video again. How you did the teeth was great. The photo not being detailed and how you go about this issue. I love your connected way of approach and how you speak of connecting. The colours you used to get the dark corners of the mouth really helped. I keep a look out every week for your Patreon channel to start.

I am just starting to do portraits so this is very useful. Interesting to see you use colours I would never think of but your underpainting looks better than most of my finished ones. I will slow it down in places and watch which colours you are using. Great video

You really have Inspired me to work towards being a better artist and to understand the pastel medium. Not doing portraits rn cause I feel I’m lacking some direction and need some classes or a Patreon person to learn from. So, doing animals for now. There’s no one on Patreon that does mainly portraits with pastel. Most are oils or acrylics and I don’t like either of those mediums. Baby steps, I learn eventually.

Hey Dave great job I love your videos. I'd love to see a video on drawing white fabric. I'm currently working on a piece involving a white blanket and none of the Grey's in my carbOthello set are nice enough on their own so I'm having some trouble mixing to get the perfect grey
@DavePortersArt
@DavePortersArt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Josiah... thrilled that you love my videos... white fabric is best approached in my experience using ultramarine blue, Allizian crimson mix and then dull this down in places where it is need with a yellow that works. It is a case of experimenting. Best for the extreme Highlights to use a Rembrandt white stick... Take a look at the video in my channel how to draw a lacy top... I go in great detail the method I use. Take care happy pastel painting. 🙏🙏
