I’m glad to hear you’ve come around to Liszt. I was a little perturbed that you were so down on his work in your other videos, as I have a great respect for him and his music. I was particularly impressed by his character after reading part of Alan Walkers biography of Liszt - such generosity of spirit!

You've done it again, Dave! I can't imagine a better organized or presented Liszt survey. I recently read the reviews in Classics Today of Years of Pilgrimage, and am listening to the set played by Lazar Berman. What sensitivity and power!

My favorite Hungarian Rhapsody 2 is Rachmaninov's with his own nearly four minute cadenza. Virtuosity on top of virtuosity. Besides Rach's own recording, it's on Naxos played by Idil Birit.

Thanks for this helpful survey. I think the B minor sonata can also be heard in the orchestral version as the score to Sir Frederick Ashton's ballet 'Marguerite and Armand' which is his version of the story of the Lady of the Camellias. The ballet was written for Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev when their partnership was really taking off.

Hi Dave! Great video as always. When I got the notification I couldn't believe you were going to make a video on liszt after your crazy video where you said "liszt is trash". One suggestion: Could you please give a review of the Rattle/Zimmerman Beethoven piano concerto cycle they did with LSO?. It would be great. Thank you

I've made lots of Liszt videos. Check out the playlist. You folks really need to find a sense of humor!

@@DavesClassicalGuide Dave, you’re smart enough to know the difference between jesting and unwarranted harsh criticism. And most of your other videos on Liszt are the latter. I enjoyed your monosodium glutamate post on Liszt, that was jesting in an enjoyable light. Yet your other videos on Liszt are simply unjustified, mean, and not very professional. I see others here have similar views as I do, so there’s obviously merit to what we’re saying. But it’s your channel, and as they say, do what you please. Yet I hope some of our remarks sink in. BTW ‘this’ video was excellent. Keep it up! Your List on Liszt didn't get us pissed! .... You see, we do have a sense of humor. LOL

One of the greatest pleasures of watching your channel daily for the past two year has been the 'rehabilitation' of Liszt and, close second, Schumann. Could Vivaldi be next? Not that you have ever trashed him but you seem (to me anyway) to buy into the standard criticism concerning his repetitiveness, to which I would add often painfully dull slow sections.

Funnily enough, I see on my drop down notifications that Dave has just released an Essential Vivaldi list!!! I think Dave has always been pretty fair where Vivaldi is concerned; he has pointed out certain concertos that aren't as workaday as maybe some others are, always adding that in that Era, composers self borrowed as a matter of course...and as for Schumann, one of my favorites, he has always admitted that his bias stems from his father's disdain for having to learn his pieces when he really wanted to play jazz, etc

I'd been told that the B minor Sonata had an implicit Faust program.

on the "words" for Liebestraeume: if you can stomach extreme puerile camp, it might be amusing to dig up Ken Russell's film Lisztomania, where Roger Daltrey plays Franz Liszt and sings English words to the first of them; it also becomes one of the main musical cues in the score.
