Actually 'soccer' isn't a correct way of saying it. Soccer is an abbreviation of 'association football'... In the time that the word 'soccer' was abbreviated from this term, there were other abbreviations like 'assoc', but for some reason 'soccer' stuck with the Americans even though no one really else calls it that. Football is the official name of the sport, soccer is just a colloquialism which is one of the reasons why the world doesn't take the USA seriously when it comes to international football.

Rudi Leandro Except, the Canadians, Japanese, Australians, Irish, South Africans, Zimbabwe, and alot of island countries in the south pacific all use some variation of the word soccer. So no, we aren't the only ones to use the term. In total I'd estimate 200-300 million people outside the US use some form of the term soccer, and add the US that means there are over half a billion people that call the sport soccer. Get over it!
