Smith complained so he was promised a title shot but David dropped his belt instead. Dirrell and Yildirim ended up facing off for the vacant belt in a fight cut short on a headclash cut on Dirrell with it ending in a controversial SD. Yildiriim petitioned for the immediate rematch, but the WBC decided to let David cut in first again and put Yildirim in the mandatory position but David never handled that business either. In the meantime Plant called David out for a unification but his manager Sampson refused. Smith during this time was still petitioning to have the fight ordered but Sampson told him to "stand in line" even though Smith was the top dog with the WBA and Ring champ by then lol. The WBC finally ordered David fight his years backed up mandatories Yildirim and Smith once and for all, but David dropped his belt like a hot potato again. Afterward the WBC gave David yet another title shot at 175, but once again David refused. David didn't step up and take an actual title eliminator until last year against Plant (despite lying about being 3 year mandatory), and the WBC was set to rule on his status this March but at the last minute David suddenly rushed to sign a rando fight with Gvozyk coming out of retirement and asked the WBC to name that an eliminator instead of activating his 168 mandatory. David does all that talking yet spends his career padding his 0 refusing to fight anyone with upside despite having strings repeatedly pulled in his favor.
