*Attention* . His excessive need for attention drove him then, and he's still driven by it now. He's the son of hope now because although he's Jewish, being a Jesus preaching bible pastor, he's found a way to feel important. He holds bible meetings with inmates who look up to him. Why _would_ he want to leave prison? If he were out he'd kill again eventually because attention dies down sooner or later. It could easily be argued hat his belief that he's some mouthpiece for a deity goes to show that he's still as disconnected as when he was worshipping the old scapegoat - Satan. This case was the first time I was mature enough to comprehend what a serial killer was about. I was 12 at the time and remember seeing this in the news. Seeing the interviews of people and how frightened they were. Then they apprehend him and it seemed such a emotional let down. He seemed such a loser. By that I mean someone weak and as far from scary as possible. He always seemed to be smiling/smirking in the photos. It really made me mad.

Brilliant analysis Dr Grande Phd. I lived in Queens, NY , during the Berkowitz .44 caliber killer who terrorized NY City from 1976-77. It was the height of the Disco Era, many young people going out dancing at discotheques. 📀💿📀

I think you videos really provide a glimpse into the darkest corners of human mind but it strikes me how ethical, objective and non-judgemental you manage to build your narrative. His surname has actually become a synonym of a serial killer in the countries of the former Soviet Union. He was that notorious. I vividly remember my dad pulling our stationwagon over &it being searched ( NYS thruway) by the State Police, FBI... The authorities were on a Manhunt! As a teenager& being a female I felt esp. Vulnerable...my parents were suddenly 'Woke'&our freedom gone! The 70's in NY were no joke! Pedophiles/ pimps would follow we girls trying to coax us into their black caddies, lincolns etc ...A very dangerous time for children! Drugs, Rapes& general violent behavior were seemingly everywhere!

Thank you for this interesting analysis. Having just viewed a 2015 nine-parter featuring Berkowitz alone, you provide a very different perspective (starting 1400+ fires indeed!) If he is psychotic, it's only mildly so - he comes across as quite normal, likeable, even. I think he had a fascination for the dark side of life, which he felt compelled to explore. I also think he craves attention (it's amazing, considering he's been incarcerated for over 40 years, how many videos featuring him are available to view online). In the final analysis, he, unlike many other serial killers, is remorseful & is trying to atone, to the point of declining the offer of parole & should be given credit for that.

According to his confession in an interview and to some witnesses, he didn't commit all these crimes.

Thank you for yet another professional commentary. You've done so many here lately, you're off the chain! Berkowitz is a hard nut to crack, no pun intended. He definitely intended to kill by knife which is more common than the use of a firearm in sexual serial killers. He had to change his method when he discovered that victims take umbrage to being stabbed and will usually fight back. But he really overcompensated in the choice of the gun. He was very intent on not failing again. A .44 is a very loud gun, I'm sure he woke the entire neighborhood each time. It's just so strange to me that didn't matter to him.

So interesting, not only insightful but also Dr. G. knows weaponry; amazing.

I've always been curious about Son of Sam but never really sat down to look him up. This is such an interesting introduction to the topic. It sobers me to notice the correlation between inappropriate maternal behavior and serious mental illness (not implying causation, but it surely doesn't help). Man, I have had several frontal lobe hits in my life, all I got was an inability to initiate much of anything that isn't a frank habit, a severe lack of motivation (especially regarding housework and manual labor), and symptoms of adhd. Luckily I have a solid work ethic at my job, a decent financial education, and a healthy respect for law and order. I guess I lucked out.

It's interesting the 2 periods he was relatively stable were in high structure environments: military and prison. I was also thinking about the difference I see in my own practice when a parent tries to compel a juvenile into therapy. Today the patient/client has many more rights, especially as a juvenile. I wonder at the harm done compelling him to go to therapy weekly; add this to counseling from an ill-prepared counselor, well, you get the picture.

Love your videos! Any chance you could put Tiffany Moss on your list to look at? She killed her stepdaughter and was sentenced to death last year. The thing I find most strange is she chose to represent herself but didnt actually do anything in court. Not opening statement, no cross examination, no closing argument. At first I thought maybe she wants the death sentance but she is appealing. Very strange person.

Dr. Grande, have you done a study yet of the man who assassinated Gianni Versace yet? His name was Andrew Cunanan. I remember the story at the time, and just remember what a bizarre case it was. Please consider doing this case if you haven't already.

I was living in the Bronx as a teen at that time. Even though I didn't fit the physical type he supposedly victimized, I was still told to be careful vehemently. It was all over TV when they got him. It was frightening time!

As a kid in grade school at time, in NYC, I remember how scared everybody was. The terror this guy put people through.

I just turned 14 when Berkowitz shot the couple in Brooklyn. I lived nearby. Between those shootings and the horrible blackout around the same time that summer, it was an awful time to be a New Yorker.

I enjoy your videos a lot. From what you have said though it sounds like he was psychotic to me. I was disappointed you didn’t speak about taking into account the other symptoms of psychosis. For example, disorganised thinking, the incoherent letters he wrote, the role of trauma and dopamine in the development of psychosis. There is lots of information now around Prodromal signs and positive and negative symptoms and I would have been interested to see if you could match any of these other, less obvious symptoms, to him. I am also curious to know why other psych professionals felt he did not meet the criteria for psychosis beyond that he appeared lucid in later interviews.

Thank goodness for observant people. With folks like this out there, it is good to be really aware of your surroundings and the behavior of the people around you at all times. He certainly suffered several terrible events at a young age and I'm really sorry for that, but once he started killing small animals, that's when my sympathy wanes. Thank you for the insight on this twisted member of the Lunatic Fringe (I count myself as a card carrying member myself.) Who knows what he told the therapist in that year & a half; may have been all lies for all the good it did him. The issue I found most interesting was that Berkowitz is a model prisoner, just like Ed Kemper & (I think) Kuklinski. IMHO, it seems that the relatively close supervision in the max. security prisons does some of these killers some good. As if the rigid rules & boundaries gives them limitations they didn't acknowledge on the street as children or adults.

I'd be interested to hear your analysis of Ivan Milat who committed the "Backpacker Murders" in Australia.

David Berkowitz did not initially recant his statements regarding dogs or demons speaking to him or, apart from a few off the cuff comments made at the time of his arrest, "officially" confess to anything.. There was a brief window in which his lawyer seemed to have him convinced to go for a plea of insanity. Then, in the 11th hour - if you will, David surprised everyone involved by requesting to see a priest or pastor. It was not until immediately following this meeting with the priest, that he confessed to the crimes and recanted all of his previous statements about dogs or demons talking to him. He claimed that any such statements he'd made were simply lies he'd told, to avoid responsibility. The meeting with the priest was private. No one other than the two of them knows what was said. The police that were present when he came out of the room where he'd spoken to the priest, said that he seemed noticeably different somehow. Personally, I think that; given how often David makes reference (in conversation with others, spoken to himself and overheard by others, written in his notes - which were layering the floor of his apartment, etc) to dogs speaking, demons speaking to him through dogs, etc...I think he was lying about having lied, more or less. I think that it is more likely the case, that the priest convinced him that this whole 'dogs & demons' narrative was simply a lie that he'd been telling himself. Again though, no one really knows for sure what exactly the two of them talked about. Berkowitz had made some statements, on video, about having changed his story about 'dogs & demons', but...in my opinion, they sure don't ring true. They seem almost like...bad acting. This is just my guess though.

Thank you for another comprehensive overview. Sometimes there are spiritual elements that are beyond human understanding and clinical scope. David Berkowitz defied all odds to be a better person, and a servant to others, including guards and his fellow inmates. I hope more people observe his actions before and after he was incarcerated. He should not have improved, but he did. This, to me, is nothing short of Divine intervention.

in the beginning, this sounds like an episode of Dragnet. very well presented. i live here in New York and remember the “Son of Sam” killings. he was present in our heads, but living in Manhattan, we were not that scared very glad when he was caught!! his life story is a sad one though. . .

Another great video! I wonder if drug use could have negatively impacted his mental health while he was committing crimes (lead to his delusions?). Also, in my line of work we often see those with anti-social/narcissistic personality traits (in severe form) will show no improvement in therapy and will often negatively impact future recidivism

Great video. I would like to know if there is any evidence that therapy is likely to have a positive impact on somebody with antisocial personality disorder. That is, would we actually be statistically likely to see a reduction in violence and criminality?
