+TheDivine MrM Seriously, it's been three weeks to the day the news broke and to this day I can't watch a Bowie video without my eyes welling up. I went into shock the first day but from the second day on...I knew I was going to feel a lot of sadness, but in reality, it hit me A LOT harder than I thought it would. Maybe it was the poignancy with which he died - two days after the album's release, with reviews through the roof and acclaim coming in as strong as ever at any point in his career. I've loved him deeply for 43 years and will miss him terribly for 43 more.

+Marlene Habib Well, it was a HUGE loss, Marlene. He was right up there with The Beatles in terms of the impact he had on people, on culture and on the world. But whereas The Beatles themselves were a short and intense experience that really only lasted for about six years, from February, 1964 (I'm speaking in relation to the U.S.) until the announcement of their break up in April of 1970, at which point they splintered into solo artists doing solo projects for varying lengths of time and to varying degrees of success, David carried on for 47 years. But Paul is still with us and STILL doing reasonably good work over these last 15 years. The "death" of The Beatles happened slowly, in a way, and it wasn't until John's murder that the possibility of the return of The Beatles came to a true end. And then George passed on in 2001 or 2002. But we still have Paul doing concerts (and Ringo too) doing Beatles songs, so in a way, they're "still alive." But with David, he was John, Paul, George and Ringo all in one and when he died, that was it. It's like all four Beatles died at once. So yeah, it's really been hard and much harder than I thought it would be. I'm not engrossed in sadness anymore; I've accepted his passing, but there will ALWAYS be a yearning, an "unrequited love" for his continued existence that will never be fulfilled, and well, that hurts. It pains me...and you and everyone else on this planet who had the wherewithal to appreciate David and his art and creativity and work and humor and magic and everything that he was. It's sad and it sucks but like George Harrison sang back in the day when we were all mourning the "passing" of The Beatles,"All Things Must Pass." But that understanding doesn't make everything suddenly feel OK. I'm not happy about it AT ALL. I'm still not OK with with David not being here anymore. It still...hurts my heart and saddens me. And yes, Arcade Fire is a wonderful band. I've been enjoying them since their first album, Arcade Funeral. I saw them in concert at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles many years ago (how the time flies.) And I love that you're from Canada, which is one of the greatest countries on the planet. You should also be proud that you're Canadian, period. Canadians are wonderful people and I'm going to get shit for this, but as a whole a lot less stupid and rude than Americans are, though the vast majority of Americans are wonderful people too. But the fact that a narcissistic, racist, misogynist blowhard like Donald Trump enjoys the amount of support he does speaks volumes.

Right. Makes me think of that movie SEarching For a Friend For The End of The World. I don't remember if this song was on there, but it should have. It makes me think of a guy figuring out there's not much time on Earth left so he feels he needs to redeem his sins but also he wants to reconnect with a lost love and anybody he wronged in the past. But also its one of the most well written songs about the apocalypse and about how different people react to it.

This is the only version I've heard so far that comes close to matching the hysteria of the original recording. In no small part because of Bowie's singing- it sounds like he's trying to reach the same emotional peak towards the end, and while nothing can top the original recording, it's just as moving to hear. But also, Arcade Fire's additions are so good, especially the strings! The strings add so much to the original recording and they nail those parts here, possibly even improving on them.

I saw Bowie in Cleveland, OH, about 1971/72. He looked like Marlene Dietrich. When I saw him again about 1973/74, he was Ziggy Stardust. The Spiders were Trevor Bolder, Mick Ronson and one more name I forget. I've liked Arcade Fire since Keep the Car Running and salute the Grammy's for recognizing them. Thanx, David, for playing with them! Some Canadian bads are cool, I've been a huge fan of Tragically Hip, too.

In the summer of 1970 my friend's older brother played a British import record he had borrowed called "Space Oddity". 2 years later, during my HS freshman year I heard "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" and I was hooked. Now, 36 years later, my 19 year old son strums "Space Oddity" on his acoustic guitar asking if I've ever heard of the tune. I'm the 51 year old I refer to below. What I meant below is with all the changes... the "re-discovery" of Bowie continues with each new generation.

Has anyone noticed how well his voice has matured? He goes from a perfect impersonation of Dylan - for some odd reason, I don't know - to this grand operatic voice, and then back to sounding like he did in '72. Strange. Yet... Wonderful!
