Lyrics:
There's a brand new dance
But I don't know its name
That people from bad homes
Do again and again
It's big and it's bland
Full of tension and fear
They do it over there but we don't do it here
Fashion! Turn to the left
Fashion! Turn to the right
Oooh, fashion!
We are the goon squad
And we're coming to town
Beep-beep
Beep-beep
Listen to me - don't listen to me
Talk to me - don't talk to me
Dance with me - don't dance with me, no
Beep-beep
There's a brand new talk
But it's not very clear
That people from good homes
Are talking this year
It's loud and tasteless
And I've heard it before
You shout it while you're dancing
On the whole dance floor
Oh bop, fashion
Fashion! Turn to the left
Fashion! Turn to the right
Oooh, fashion!
We are the goon squad
And we're coming to town
Beep-beep
Beep-beep
Listen to me - don't listen to me
Talk to me - don't talk to me
Dance with me - don't dance with me, no
Beep-beep
Oh, bop, do do do do do do do do
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion
Oh, bop, do do do do do do do do
Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion
La-la la la la la la-la
About David Bowie:
David Bowie redefined musical genres and the potential of live performance for generations of music lovers. Creating and discarding a variety of personae and restlessly challenging musical boundaries, Bowie released timeless albums including Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust…, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs, Young Americans, Station to Station, "Heroes,” Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day and many more. Blackstar, Bowie’s 28th and final studio album, was released on his 69th birthday, January 8, 2016. David Bowie died on January 10, 2016, two days after the release of Blackstar. His body of work, his influence on the worlds of music, art, fashion, film, theatre and beyond, and his legacy of innovation and reinvention will live forever. 2022 kicks off with Bowie at 75, a celebration of his 75th birthday with the Brilliant Adventure box set, the previously unreleased Toy, the 50th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust and a series of special events.

@Unicorns are my best friends It's a Capricorn thing. Before you dismiss me, i'm quoting BOWIE: "I love the hills, I'm like a goat, I AM a Capricorn, so I love to hike up on the mountain." Capricorns have marvelous bone structure, so they age backward 'til about 65/70. i watch his 80s videos & can't tell if he's 20 or 40. 😍✌💞

Robert Fripp’s guitarwork in this Classic Bowie song is superb. BUT it is not Fripp in the video playing, it is a young G.E. Smith standing on that small stage playing the Telecaster. He was in the Saturday Night Live band for many years, played with Darryl Hall&John Oates and for some years even in Bob Dylan’s band.

Fun fact: Many of the "dance moves" used in this video are re-used in later Bowie videos. The 'piano-playing' move at 1:02 and 2:51 is used in the "Blackstar" video at 2:10 and various other points throughout. The move where he suddenly touches the ground at 0:32 is used in the "Ashes to Ashes" video at 1:11, while Bowie and a couple of women are walking in front of a bulldozer. (Yes, you're missing context.) I'd love to hear other examples of moves in this video used in other ones if anyone knows of some.

Wow, I had no idea Slow Burn was connected to Space Oddity & Ashes since I haven't seen the video. Hopefully that one gets uploaded soon, since it has yet to be on an official channel. The lyrics in the Pet Shop Boys remix of Hallo Spaceboy also have connections to Major Tom, and the 'clown' from Ashes appears in the shortened video for "Love is Lost". Bowie really liked keeping his characters intertwined.

Beginning of The New Yorker Bowie phase which would be him til his untimely death.AT that time it was the height of the fashion world (at least the country). And it was becoming rather stale. By 80 the glam of Studio 54, and Fire Island parties became boring and drab. Meanwhile Antifashion chic became the rage in areas like the Bowery.

You people are ignorant of what he's even singing about. This is about the "New Romantic Movement" in Britain. A dead give away should be "They do it over there but they don't do it here." Meaning how British pop fans dressed going to the clubs. The New Romantic movement was a pop culture movement that originated in Britain in the late 70s (This song was 1980) involving fans and their style of fashion.

@@BK-yb3qd I don't think Bowie was that badly down on the New Romantics: he hired several of them to appear in the "Ashes to Ashes" video. Teenage Wildlife is... not an angst ridden diss track? There is literally like 2 lines in the entire song possibly interpretable as that. If you'd ever actually listened to the lyrics then you would frankly not come to that conclusion, because it requires a ludicrous amount of cherry picking.

Fun fact, Alan Hunter, one of the original MTV VJs is one of the dancers in this video. He's the guy with the stripped shirt and red suspenders, and can be seen a few times like at 3:10. He later said that he went over to David and told him it was a thrill to meet him, and he gave him a pat on the back saying "Nice work mate."

I had no idea Robert Fripp is responsible for the alien guitar drill sounds on this track...but it makes such perfect sonic sense now...you can hear the signature "Frippertronic" sounds, similar to many of the guitar effects on King Crimsons iconic _Discipline_ album. 🎸🎼👍

I always thought this song was a warning about Fascism coming back into popularity which it seems to do every 20 years or so. Suddenly the Goon Squad comes to town and to power and your marching off to War. What for? Who knows? They made up an Enemy for you to go die for fighting them. It’s Problem. Dilemma. Solution. George Orwell wrote in his classic book 1984 that the Party in power kept changing the enemy back and forth depending on the current climate. It was a state of constant War which you’re never meant to win. Your just supposed to train and march off to War and Die! You were basically being manipulated and used 24/7. Fascism back in Fashion.

He actually wrote it as a reaction to the "Blitz" movement of the late 1970s in post-punk London. Blitz was like a rebirth of glam, with all the bands trying to outdo each other in the fashion department. It featured bands like early Spandau Ballet, Visage, and Midge Ure-era Ultravox. It was very much a precursor to the New Romantic sounds of the early 1980s.

@@ngc-fo5te He wasn't good looking in a usual sense, that's for sure. I think the reason why so many people were attracted to him anyway is because they found him 'interesting' rather than 'handsome'. The eyes and the androgynous look, and his fashion style. He stood out and was unashamed of his weirdness. Confidence always draws people people in. Also, he had a beautiful voice, charming personality and a unique sense of humour.

Bowie was supposedly fascinated by G.E.'s "weird" face. G.E.'s also in the "Station to Station" concert scene of the German _Christiane F._ movie. Plus, Bowie had planned to tour in 1981 for this album, after his run with _The Elephant Man_ on Broadway ended. He went on the Tonight Show to perform "Life On Mars" and "Ashes To Ashes" with what would have been the touring band (including G.E.). Of course, that tour didn't happen because of David freaking out about Lennon's murder (David was, by some accounts, Target #2), so G.E. went on to work with Hall & Oates in 1981 while David calmed down in Switzerland. Isn't that something? If Lennon hadn't been killed, there probably wouldn't've been "Under Pressure", because David would've been on tour promoting the "Scary Monsters" album. I think he would've rather had his good friend John back over a hit song any day of the week.
