It's really cathartic because as I interpret it, I feel like he wanted to do more music so his last goodbye was not that we won't give everything but he actually couldn't give everything, we will never know if he had more to offer but I'm sure he did.

For some reason I interpreted it as him telling himself "I can't give everything away" because he is throwing all his energy into his music and fans leaving himself feeling drained at the end of it. He has to keep some secrets and joys to himself or it destroys him but also his image to the public.

I want to start this by saying I wasn't a huge Bowie fan. Actually the day before he died I made a playlist of songs by him in order to get into him more. It was the release of this album that intrigued me. I remember seeing "NEW BOWIE!" Everywhere online so I thought let's check out a good bit of his stuff while we're at it and I made a playlist of 30-40 songs. The next morning it said Bowie had passed. I was thinking to myself this is so crazy. His death left a pretty big impact on my because I am a cancer survivor. I only wish he would have survived too, what a great human being.

+Fighterx14 I remember that for a few days before he passed, I kept thinking about wanting to watch Labyrith. My boyfriend's not into those kinds of movies, so I put it off. Then he passed. My boyfriend had just happened to be scrolling through channels and he settled for Jimmy Fallon (which we rarely watch) I think it was. As soon as we put it on, they started this segment showing moments from the past where they'd had Bowie on the show.

The same thing happened with DB as did Freddie Mercury. By which I mean both were getting a lot of airplay and/or there was a lot of promotion of upcoming releases and stuff. A short time after they released an album/single(s) both had died without a hint of anything being wrong except maybe some lyrics. The difference being Bowie managed to keep a low profile with the media in the last 12 years of his life, FM couldnt get them off his case

First let me congratulate you on surviving cancer, and thank you for wanting to get familiar with David Bowie. Now on my own personal level, after both hearing the album and the story surrounding why it was made, I've gained a lot of respect for David Bowie. The day he met with his doctors and they gave him the grim diagnosis that there was nothing more they could do for him and that his days on this Earth were limited, at that time he could have spent the rest of his life on a beach in Hawaii if he wanted to, but he didn't, he went into the same studio that he had recorded his previous album, the next day, and delivered his swan song, a beautifully written, produced, engineered musical manuscript of the final days of one of the greatest musical artists of all time. A sad yet beautiful album chronicling how the man felt about death and the feeling about how his life was slowly ending, all throughout the album we hear a man struggling but finally coming to terms with his life and finally letting go which is no doubt what David was doing in his final days.

I was exactly the same, wasn’t the biggest fan but I love Labyrinth as a kid. I remember seeing the black star poster not realising it was Bowie and think ‘that’s a really cool design’. I also saw Lazarus in London and didn’t realise how many of his songs I knew without knowing they were his.

The great beauty of this single being released so long after his death is this-----since David knew he was dying, and since it has become obvious that Blackstar was his way of saying goodbye----it becomes very clear that this song was orchestrated as David's way of speaking to us from the other side. I have no doubt that this is how he planned it. When you listen to the lyrics with this in mind, it absolutely gives you goosebumps. " I can't give everything away" is speaking of the mysteries of what happens after "death". It absolutely boggles the mind.

Despite its other nuances, I think about this song as a proclamation of a live well-lived. The old adage, "you can't take it with you" is the first thing that comes to mind when I hear Bowie's repeated verse "I can't give everything away". He was able to cultivate immaterial wealth and meaning in his life- things that you CAN take with you and maybe the only things that you can't give away completely at your death. There are other sentiments in the song as well, like reluctance to leave the beauty of this life behind. The song conveys a deep sorrow and existential torment, but also ultimate triumph and gratitude along with a sense of existential thrill. To use one phrase that encompasses so much is truly a touch of genius. Such captivating words to leave us with. That he was here at all and millions of other people are still receiving these words... life is just astounding. That's what I hear in this song.

I read as many comments as I can, and I want to thank everyone. It's not so lonely knowing lots of you feel as I do. not knowing the man had such a gift. I personally feel he was more spiritual than he thought he was. So honest in his music. I felt badly for him in his younger years when interviewers really gave him a tough time, just to get a few snickers from audiences. He matured and grew, and really I thought his best years were the last years of his life. The added weight really made him look fantastic.

2:12 it's right about here that you remember this is the last Bowie song. This is it. This is how he says goodbye. You don't want the song to end because that will be it. You want it to go on forever. You don't want to say goodbye.

I like the idea that at the end, the EVERYTHING briefly closes in to be VERY THIN, which is possibly a double reference to both the Thin White Duke character (especially since Major Tom is seen right afterwards) and also his gaunt appearance at the end due to cancer. This video is astounding in spite of its simplicity.

There isn't much I wouldn't do to get this man back. I always thought I wouldn't to care much about someone I never knew but there are no words to explain how I feel knowing that he is gone. I am incredibly grateful to know that his memory and his music will never die.

If David Bowie is in heaven, then I can see him young again. I can see him ruling his underground kindom. He is still singing and dancing. He is still writing songs, and doing what he loves. He is be exactly what he want's to be and doing what he want's to do. He is playing any role he want's to. He is making love with his ego, and he is raising his children above... and God is welcoming one of his proudest creations home. This is what I want to belive...So that is how it is. ♡ R.I.P my first love.

+Whispered sins I like to think of him in Heaven catching up with old friends like John Lennon and Lou Reed, and getting the chance to meet all the interesting people like Brecht and Mozart and daVinci that he was born too late to know in person. I never got to meet him in this life; perhaps in the next one.

The Skoolmustard not true. he was inspired mostly by dylan and motown artists. he is a true artist in every sense of the word, i will never refer to him in past tense. though he's not here mortally, he is still with us. rest well major tom.
