Talking too much? No, I need way more. How did so many Bowie fans get in to a show where the tickets tended to be 'sold out' way before anyone would know who the guests were? Do you recall how Johnny's monologue did that night? He had suggested it was tough to do monologues when there were screaming young rock fans dominating the house. Did the Bowie fans get into the drama of Richard Pryor returning, as David himself certainly seemed to?

The tickets were free, you just had to get their early enough And you could find out who was performing pretty easily. It was so great!! 😃

I did not know that the Chapman/assassin dude was planning to remove yet another precious, beloved, and singularly gifted singer and lyricist from this Earth! That said, I recently saw that they still have him caged up after 43 years(!) For his own safety, I imagine, until he's ready to take his own life...IF he can! (They should blast Yoko Ono (Plastic) primitivism primal scream music in his cell 24/7 for the same effect as Hitler taking his pineapple every morning in that one Adam Sandler movie! Hahahaha....at least he got to choose which pineapple he was gonna have to cram up his arse! Bawahahahah!) I would really love to have seen John Lennon's contribution, creativity, and critique of the cultural/political/musical fabric of our society over the last 4 decades, and can't help but think we'd all be more than a little better off for it! (Which depresses me & mystifies me as to why such people do such senseless cruel deeds! Reminds me of part of the lyrics to a Doors tune: "...killer on the road...his brain is squirming like a toad..." and you know the rest of the song... OK. But the question I originally was going to ask you/somebody in the know is who was playing electric guitar on this gig? Carlos was playing (standing - at least it looked like him, but the video was pretty grainy) a Fender-Rhodes kybd and so I thought I'd see a long-beaver-haired Earl Slick on guitar, but nope. The guy looks like G. E. Smith (the SNL late show band leader) but his hair was so short! G. E. always rocked a big long-flowing head of hair in my recollection. And poor Adrian Belew...not him either as he has the same depressing defliction I've been suffering since about age 29: male pattern baldness. It's Mother Nature's way of futching cruelly with a few of us guys. Bitch! (I have pics of me in college in the late 70's with my long curly blonde locks in the style of Peter Frampton - one of my important guitar influences & idols. And you know what - Peter got hit by the bitch, too, as there's nothing left of his blonde locks, either!) So, it wasn't Mick Ronson...so I guess I'm going with the mystery guitarist must've been - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Frank Zappa!? LOL! Peace and don't forget to practice your arpeggios(!)

​@@boboala1it is a terrible Affliction and my son actually started losing his hair at about 21 ... by the time he was 38 he had had enough and finally shaved it all off which was very hard for me to get used to especially after he grew a beard . It's really a shame that how that happens to men and my son is very good looking and has a perfect shape head for being bald ; so he was one of the more fortunate ones . I saw Frampton and summer of 76 in Philly and that is one of my best concert moments ever With him singing Do You Feel Like We Do . I saw Adrian also in Philadelphia with ( a later ) King Crimson in around 1997 ? ... Another great show . But I never did get to see Bowie even though I had my chances

You saw Crimson when Adrian was in the band? Cool! I'd take that, or a Talking Heads show with him back in the day. You know Bowie kinda lured Adrian out of Zappa's full-time band...off tour. Still pissed Frank off. Coincidentally, just last night on St. Louis MO Craigslist somebody is selling a nice customized Earl Slick branded Stratocaster! Never seen or heard of one. He's one of my new guitar heroes, esp. after seeing him on a YT video with David in Australia in 1983. Fabulous band & David just moved so well with his all-legs build - like they attach up on his chest! LOL! But Earl took a solo (Fashion...?) and crouched down parallel & low to the stage like a tiger & stared the audience down for about 2 minutes, in a good way, without blinking an eye once! Awesome! He gigs with a blues guitar lady in small clubs. I hope to see him! I think he's from a Texas oil town. Do you think his parents wanted to name him 'Oil Slick' perhaps? Hehe About your son...uh...I don't tan, am not good-looking, and I have a big head, so I opt for the eternal smelly baseball cap. Sucks... Well, cheers and take care!

Was GE Smith a member of Bowie ‘s band back then it was he filling in? One think I noticed it seems that when Bowie makes a music video instead of using his band members he uses actors. Like in The video for Blue Jeans it was right side Fred and some other male model on Guitar.

Yeah he had people working for his show who were smart enough to know to do something for audiences who might have been a bit younger .

Johnny Carson was a good show though because they left politics out of it and there was always a lot of fun ... plus he had Rodney Dangerfield on a lot when I was growing up . I was born in 1958 and my family always had Johnny Carson on since I could remember and so we always watched it and usually went to bed late as kids in high school ... and even too often in grade school !😂 ( Eastern Standard Time he came on at 11:30 p.m. ) because we didn't want to miss the monologue . So we have a lot of good memories from his show ... with a lot of great comedians . But Johnny Carson was known to do good interviews because he was a good listener and could ask some very good questions .

I heard it was supposed to be a pretty good show that night . Can you talk about what it was like being there ? I guess there wasn't time after singing for them to sit there next to Johnny Carson for a moment ?

Strongly disagree. Bowie was very candid- as musicians tend to be- about borrowing. From lots of people. He said Life On Mars was melodically a reworking of My Way.

Wrong. Bowie had a massive fascination with James Dean and especially his appearance in Rebel Without a Cause. He used the same loon in the "live" footage of Station to Station in the movie "Christine F."

Yes and played with Dylan's touring band for a short while in early 80s while still at SNL. Interesting career. He was also the musical director for the Bob Dylan 40th anniversary at Columbia Records in the early 90s.

Interestingly, Daryl Hall did a solo album with Robert Fripp, who played most of the lead guitar on the Scary Monsters and “Heroes” LPs for Bowie.
