Imagine having your hero say that you're the future of music. Imagine performing in his honor, she was probably heartbroken and terrified and yet this is the best performance of her carreer. David is very proud of her, somewhere.

Imagine being 19 and paying tribute to David Bowie - a towering music icon - and singing one of his signature songs in front of his fellow Brits. The immense pressure Lorde must have been under to deliver a memorable performance. And boy did she deliver with such class and style. No gimmicks. No over-the-top props. Someone said that she has the ocean in her eyes, and a hurricane in her heart. Add to this nerves of pure steel.

Being "able to sing" isn't just about belting out high notes and screaming. It's about expressing the voice you have in such a way that it has an affect on the audience, which is something Lorde succeeds in here. Her voice wasn't made to belt, but she has terrific low and mid range. I also love how she, at 19, is the one doing this tribute. Almost like passing on the torch (fyi Bowie already called her the future of music so...what else is there to say). Wonderful performance.

+Dante Iannetta If being "able to sing" only counts on hitting notes and screaming. Billy Corgan is horrible live, Lauri from the rasmus that easily gets tired, even myself. According to these people, singing is only that. What a pity =/ You're spot-on Mr. Dante. Lorde sang it with such emotion that even Duncan praised her performance. And I also agree, it is beautiful. She use the "Minus is better" mode and worked beautifully.

A shoutout to the band, which was actually Bowie's final touring band. They were part of the Reality tour back in 2003/2004, which was cut short due to Bowie's health and was never resumed. They are Gail Ann Dorsey (bass), Sterling Campbell (drums), Mike Garson (piano), Catherine Russell (keyboards and percussion), Earl Slick and Gerry Leonard (guitars).

I was lucky to have accidentally met David Bowie in philly when I was a teen. Riding my skateboard in philly came around a corner and stopped at small group of people out front of a hotel. I said, holy shit, you're David Bowie! He said to me, and I'll never forget: "You've sussed me copper"... and he got in the limo. I didn't understand what he meant by that for quite a while and didn't get the joke at the time. Never been star struck since, I mean, who beats out meeting Bowie?

I think it's very fitting that Lorde chose Life On Mars, because I think she kind of symbolizes the girl Bowie is talking about in the song. A girl with a lonely, detached homelife goes to the movies by herself because her friend didnt show, and uses the silver screen to escape reality, which in Lorde's case would be a microphone obviously. I dunno, to me her performance was great and pretty much encapsilated the feeling and emotion of the song better than anyone I've seen.

Vonn I mean she has multiple popular songs from her 2 albums... she isn’t really a one hit wonder she hasn’t made that many albums or music she takes her time. It would be fitting to call her a one hit wonder if she continuously made songs and albums and nothing was a hit other than royals.

There is one reason why Lorde took part, and that is because Bowie loved her, and saw her as the future for music, that is why his family wanted her to sing at The Brits. That is all that matters about why she did it. His family, (especially his son) hated Gaga's tribute, and they had nothing to do with it.

THIS is how a Bowie tribute is done. It wasn't a Las Vegas show. It wasn't about anyone on that stage. The spotlight was only about Bowie, about the man and his music. This tribute was humble, modest, poignant, and simple, hosted by the people that David knew, worked with, loved, and admired. The BRITs did everything right with this. It was perfect.

I have been a adoring fan since 21 June 1972, when I saw him perform 'Starman" on the British kids TV show ''Lift Off"". My eyebrows have never recovered to this day, from the homage I made to DB by shaving them off completely during the Ziggy phase. I had never seen or heard of this girl before, I cringed and actually felt sickened by the tribute at the Grammy's by Gaga, but this, at least for me, was absolutely fitting and perfect! I can't think of a more suitable voice for this, on this occasion, her voice was perfect for it. For those that say her voice was ''off'' do not fully understand the concept of Bowie or his work. Having Gail Ann Dorsey and the rest of the DB band tour members there was really touching......and the itro by Annie Lennox (DB's 'Under Pressure' Freddie Mercury's tribute co vocalist and his friend Gary Oldman was right on the intimacy score. .I cried my eyes out watching this.

+laurence de mello I am a fan of any fine music and this was indeed a great and fitting performance. Nice to see and hear a young woman singing intelligent and individual songs and also without feeling the need to shove her arse in your face. She is not everyones cup of tea but have a listen to "Team" and " Yellow Flicker Beat", great lyrics. Bruce Springsteen also covered one of her songs when he toured New Zealand last year, which is where Lorde hails from. Just good to see young and new (not necessarily original), musicians doing well without having to follow the bland formulaic music which pop artists of most genres seem to be following.

+julienwao yes good points Julien and it was great because it was so un-gimmiky, unlike the Grammy tribute. I do get annoyed when so many say with regards to the dreadful Gaga performance, ''it was a tribute, it's up to them how they do it, it's rude to critisise a tribute'' NO! a TRIBUTE should honour and show respect for the persons body of work....... not trash or minimise it. well that's my opinion. :-). I will go and check out the tracks you mention. Thankyou Julien. P.S strange as it sounds,, when I watched this girl it was almost as if she was projecting some of DB"s energy/vibration........ weird!

+laurence de mello She has only just turned 19 so imagine the nerves knowing full well the responsibility she had taken on. Some people have upset themselves as they say she was flat but I didn't notice that until I read the comments. But I did feel that from the second verse she felt David's presence and enjoyed the rest of the song. If she was flat then she made up for it on the vocalization of 'Mars' at the end of the first chorus but the second chorus ending of 'Mars' was just perfect for the occasion as I I could sense the anguish in her voice evoking a huge loss. The performance at the Grammy's was just diabolical but that's another tragedy in itself. Hope you appreciate the tunes!
