I love that you guys are listening to some of the more obscure songs from David. Say what you will but this song comes straight from the heart. His sincerity is obvious. A beautiful mixture of love and pain which is unfeigned, magnificently genuine. You might try "Jump, They Say", a song with similar emotion written and performed after the suicide of his brother. David Bowie offered us glimpses of his private life and feelings that I will always cherish. What a massive, heroic soul!

So great to see this old favorite in my feed today, and I loved your reaction. Responding to a couple of points you made ...............you understood right that this was a return to religion after not being involved with it for some time. Bowie had two periods of re-evaluating religion (Christianity) although he very much did not stay religious. When he wrote this song he was doing a lot of cocaine so he was messed up, but he was also acting in a pretty dark film, and the filming was very stressful on him. He said he turned to religion as a kind of spiritual protection. Another song on this album that mentions belief is "Golden Years."
