An hour with David Byrne, the celebrated musician, artist, writer, cycling enthusiast, filmmaker and now Broadway star. He has a new hit Broadway show called "American Utopia." The show grew out of Byrne's recent world tour, which the British music publication NME said "may just be the best live show of all time." Byrne talks about the production, his time in the groundbreaking band Talking Heads, his website Reasons to Be Cheerful, Greta Thunberg and more.

Absolutely ADORE this man, the recent concerts have just amazing: he's not just outpacing people of his age group, he's outpacing the entire music industry, and has been doing so since the early 80s. Total musical master.

Steven, I saw the show last night. It never flagged. The audience and performers fed off of each other. He was amazing but so were the other musicians. The lighting, choreography, and overall atmosphere was upbeat. I'm still thinking and feeling it 24 hours later.

I watched HBO's show twice already - and absolutely love love love everything about the production. If I still lived in NY the live show would have been great to see - but doubt I could have afforded to sit in the front row - so my tv gave me closeups and the thrill of the creativity of Mr. Byrne and thank Spike Lee, as well.

When I first saw American Utopia on TV - via HBO I think - I had no idea who the 'star' was nor anything about the show. To say the least it is the best live stage show I've ever seen. It was mesmerizing, stunning and as professionally done as humanly possible - not a player missed a beat and the ensemble, the simple same 'costume', the bare feet, the clean stage all meshed to make it a dazzling tour de force. Bravo Mr. Byrne

David Byrne. A Talking Head that told us to "Stop Making Sense" and encouraged "Burning Down the House" along the "Road to Nowhere" wants to influence people in a "Once in a Lifetime" "City of Dreams". "Making Flippy Floppy" with "Slippery People" is the "Genius of Love" in a "Perfect World" when the "Lady Don't mind" if your little " Creatures of Love" become a "Psycho Killer". and he still asks? "How did we Get Here"?

Great interview. To me what stuck out was the question by Byrne: “What do we want”? With such diversity, that doesn’t have a simple answer. Also just get involved. If we don’t do it, somebody else will do it for us whether we like it or not. This is the first time I’ve heard of a tiered voting system. I really think having second, third and so on choices is a great idea where our other choices have an impact on the outcome. I’m definitely going to look into that and support it.

Ever since at least 1980, We the People of planet Earth have had the capability of providing the highest quality of food, the highest quality of clothing, the highest quality of shelter, the highest quality of healthcare, and the highest quality of education for each and every man, woman and child on the face of the Earth, and to do it in such a way that was in Harmony with Nature. We already have gazillions of practical creative solutions that have not been implemented yet. What we don't have is enough public servants to make sure they are implemented. Here in New York City, we are building a Majority Voting Bloc of at least 1 million individuals (a measly 20% of the electorate) who are well-informed, free of disinformation and misinformation, on all the major issues of today AND devoting their time, energy, resources, and talents to the political process, esp the campaigns. That is all we need to win the Mayorship, at least 2/3 of the City Council, at least 2/3 of the Congressional seats, at least 2/3 of the State Senate seats and at least 2/3 of the Assembly seats. We will make sure that only the most Loving/most Wise among us become our public servants. We will change the laws and implement the gazillions of creative solutions we already have on a grand scale and make NYC a model of what's possible in the world today. Then finally we will be in a position to transition to a Whole New Way of Living rooted in Love and Wisdom with no need for any government. See my group on Facebook: "Creating a Wonderful World. (let's get it done already)".

Something I have been thinking about ... the decision makers should be youth. We have it inverted. We will fail as a species until we have a change of heart and mind, but we the adults of the species, in the majority, are unable to do this. Leaders need to check themselves; a way to do this would be to seek advice from the very young ... and base our decisions on their principles. But hey that would take courage, and we do not have the courage to make long term decisions let alone follow the advice of children ....

@19:20 Damn, his timeline on Dada is way off. Zurich Dada was during *WWI*, starting in about 1916, not the 30s and not fleeing the Nazis. The reason so many of those artists from around Europe were in Switzerland was as a way of not having to fight in the war, the same reason an American of draft age might have left for Canada during the Vietname War. You would think someone from an Art School background would know this.

"in the Future" In the future everyone will have the same haircut and the same clothes. In the future everyone will be very fat from the stachy diet. In the future everyone will be very thin from not having enough to eat. In the future it will be next to impossible to tell girls from boys, even in bed. In the future men will be 'super masculine' and women will be 'ultra-feminine'. In the future half of us will be 'mentally ill'. In the future there will be no religion or spirtualism of any sort. In the future the 'psychic arts' will be put to practical use. In the future we will not think that 'nature' is beautiful. In the future the weather will always be the same. In the future no one will fight with anyone else. In the future there will be an atomic war. In the future water will be expensive. In the future all material items will be free. In the future everyone's house will be like a little fortress. In the future everyone's house will be a total entertainment centre. In the future everyone but the wealthy will be very happy. In the future everyone but the wealthy will be very filthy. In the future everyone but the wealthy will be very heathly. In the future TV will be so good that the printed word will function as an artform only. In the future people with boring jobs will take pills to relieve the boredom. In the future that no one will live in cities. In the future there will be mini-wars going on everywhere. In the future everyone will think about love all the time. In the future political and other decisions will be based completely on opinion polls. In the future there will be machines which will produce a religious experience in the user. In the future there will be groups of wild people, living in the wildernes Source: LyricFind Songwriters: David Byrne

I liked this show until they lied about something that happened in my town. There were a group of college students protesting the war in Iraq. They had permits to protest on campus. They got too excited and started marching down a highway. No permit for that. They caused a traffic accident. An old lady broke her arm. A bunch of protestors got arrested. The host of this show reported the story, but she left out the fact that the protestors were not supposed to leave the campus, or the traffic accident they caused or the old lady breaking her arm. She made it sound like an unjust arrest. I stopped trusting the host of this show after that. She came off as 180 degrees from Fox News, just with the same ability to leave out the proper context. Who knows what else she lies about.
