CEU’s Department of Economics and Business hosted the university’s Distinguished Visiting Professor, David Card, from April 8-17, 2024. CEU Distinguished Visiting Professors are leading academics in their disciplines who deliver public lectures and collaborate with resident faculty at the university.
During his tenure at CEU, Card gave a public lecture on April 16, 2024 titled, “Cause and Effect and Evidence-Based Policy", jointly hosted by CEU’s Departments of Economics and Business, Network and Data Science, Public Policy and the Office of the Pro-Rector for Research and Faculty.
David Card is a labor economist and professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley. He has done pioneering economic analysis in the area of the minimum wage, immigration and racial disparities in education. In 2021 he won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for work that challenged orthodoxy and dramatically shifted understanding of inequality and the social and economic forces that affect low-wage workers. Much of Card’s most profound work is based on “natural experiments” - looking not at theoretical constructs, but at how economic dynamics played out in the real world.
Central European University is an institution of advanced research and teaching, dedicated to socially and morally responsible intellectual inquiry.
