David Coulthard talks about McLaren's secret brake on their F1 cars during the 1997 and 1998 season. This secret brake pedal helped to rotate the car in slower corners, but was outed after a photographer took a picture down the tub of the McLaren F1.
This is a Clip from The Scott Mansell Podcast, where Scott from Driver61 talks to incredible people from Formula 1, Motorsport, Engineering and Business.

That third pedal was pure mechanical poetry. Mr Coulthard is aging well anyway.

Sounds very complex to operate, props to them. Regarding aging. David has perfectly anatomically developed lower 2/3 of the face. Proper breastfeeding, good posture etc which results in wide airways, developed maxilla/mandible, great eye support, "not a huge nose" (because maxilla is protruding forward). That’s why his eyes don’t look tired, great bone eye support. If you look at the gentleman on the left (mind you, they have like 15 year difference), starting from neck posture, nose, eyes and overall facial structure … no eye creams will give you the "non tired" look aka bags under eyes. Search Mike Mew (if your interested if not yourself development but at least your kids health, posture, facial development).

@@TeKaMOTO that's basically the problem of modern F1... and with "modern" I mean from 2000s on at least (but we could also include the 90s, definitely). Of course, every year, there is always a backdoor or a loose requirement somewhere but designers definitely cannot go "full throttle"

Rb with blown diffuser had the throttle body 100% open all the time, so the cvt wont do any difference. They controlled the torque with the ignition retardation only, hence the sound under braking

I thought of the individual rear braking for our Super Vee back in the early eighties. We had to run open diffs and the problem we had was hiking the inside rear wheel in low speed corners, which resulted in the inner wheel spinning. One thought was to use wheel speed sensors and custom designed box to monitor that and apply braking to the inside wheel. The other was a four way proportioning valve mounted in the cockpit with a joystick lever to 'lean' on the rear brake of the spinning wheel. It never got past the thought process mainly due to the problem usually only happening on street courses.

CVT, continu variabele transmissie, was Dutch. It was from the carcompany DAF/Volvo. DAF still is a major truck building company under the flag of Paccar. (Van) Doorne Aanhanger Fabriek, Doorne trailer company, they started with building trailers. They invented the cvt, used it in little dafs, like the daffodil 55 and 66, volvo took the passengercar part and the design of the 340/343 (DAF 99) and the 400 serie volvo up to the v40/s40. Dutch city it originated? Eindhoven, trucks are still being build in Borne

So basically it was manually operated torque vectoring, a lot of road cars do this now automatically when you turn the steering wheel and the car detects understeer using its internal gyro, as part of the multi channel ABS system and ESP.

@knuckles7410

@ukwan: I know you tried to sound smart but it has nothing to do with "torque vectoring" since braking doesn't act on torque but it's output on the wheels. You can't be that sloppy and call a brake pedal "torque control". That's not how it works.
@theranter
@theranter 7 ай бұрын
@@knuckles7410 just to let you know: there are numerous cars that you can buy that have what is referred to as “brake bias torque vectoring” which is the system that uses the brakes to shift torque around to the wheels that need it most for optimal handling performance. So this would, in fact be “manually operated torque vectoring”. Do us a favor and know what you’re talking about next time. And if you don’t think I’m correct, Google it yourself.

Huub van Doorne (the D in DAF) created DAF trucks and automobiles with variomatic (CVT) transmissions. The problem was that the rubber belt couldn’t handle lot of power until they invented the metal belt and so from that the Williams project was initiated

It's amazing to me that the further development of the technology of a DAF33 could be used to make an F1 car faster.
@Eragon-wv5td
@Eragon-wv5td 8 ай бұрын
The interesting thing is, that the amount of power you can transmit even over a metal belt is also limited because you need absurdly high hydraulic pressure to keep the two metal cone-shaped plates (the cone shape Coulthard describes here) pressed together so the belt stays at the right diameter when transmitting high torque. You can kinda circumvent this problem by using a concept known as "power splitting" and transmitting only half of the mechanical power from the motor over the cvt part. You then combine the the cvt-path with the regular path directly from the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) using a planetary gear set. This way you can vary the speed your car is going without changing ICE rotation but you are not that limited anymore by your hydraulic pressures in your cvt. Would be interesting to see these kind of transmissions more often and i am quite curios why these kind of transmissions were baned by the fia.

Hell, off-roaders have been doing this forever with open diff vehicles - you ride the brake while you're on the gas so you can send power back to the wheel with traction via the brakes balancing the load on the diff, lol. Frankly, the F1 car's second brake pedal is just a fancy version of a cutting brake, like found on tractors or sand rails and such.

@@macocouy Seems the usual FIA MO really... They know and authorize it. Then some teams protest and they suddenly they decide to ban it. It happened with Lotus for 2012 season after a Ferrari protest. Happened with Mercedes with the FRIC system in 2018, also after a Ferrari protest. And so many others. All of these were known by the FIA and given the green light as legal. Until a team protests, usually with "new evidence" and then the FIA bans it. The Lotus case was a bit much because Lotus was allowed to build and test the system in pre-season and like two weeks before the season starts they ban it, leaving Lotus with their pants down with a car that was made to work with that system.

They’re very funny about driver aids. The cars are surprisingly both very high tech, but very low tech at the same time. They want more focus on driver involvement and skill, which in turn lets us see greater performance differences between drivers.

@@gnarkiller CVT’s are extremely cheap, and super efficient on low capacity engines but their efficiencies drop off significantly with larger powers to deal with.
