If after a sinus and vocal infection recovering for 6 months without guarantee to sing again and you learn that your guitar player with one of tve ingeneer would take another singer to finish as fast as possible you would have fired John as well.

Sykes is as good a singer as Coverdale. He just doesn't want to play and sing on tour all the time. Plus, Sykes wrote the 87 riffs and collaborated with DC. Unfortunately we the fans lose. Great album 87

He did. According to Coverdale it was blistering. However, he also says it was wrong for the song and that an engineer accidentally erased it. So it will never be on a reissue or remaster or alternate take.

I know Coverdale fired Sykes, Neil Murray, and Cozy Powell when he decided to record the Whitesnake album, but I thought Aynsley Dunbar was only brought in to do the sessions, not to actually join the band. Regardless, he did an amazing job on that album.

That sounds about right. Coverdale was stalling to do the vocals. I can't remember if he had maybe an infection. Sykes didn't like that DC was taking so long. He probably suggested that the band get a new singer. Maybe the other guys were even thinking about it. But it wasn't their band. DC fires everyone. I don't believe Coverdale wrote any of the guitar parts. Still he might have written some chords and a melody and lyrics, which is essentially how royalties are paid. They can't get along. One album. That's it. This is so much like Campbell and Dio. It's a shame but that's the way it goes. It's 35 years later. Let it go.

David had a sinus infection that spread into the vocal chords. He had operation and not couldn't talk let alone sing for 6 months. Without guarantee to be able to sing again. Sykes was impatient and made himself out alone. He tried to get another singer with the first producer to get the vocals. When Coverdale heard this ... Dunbar was just mean to be a session player. Neil was unfortunaly never called again and there re some distance problem in schedule. But even if Dave fired everyone, not to defend him but in his situation he wanted to minimize the chances to be betrayed. Thats always his politic, extract the problem to not compromise the project.

Big let go. Create a new audience for him etc. (bring in more appeal to the girls) albeit the naff stylists came in after JS had them looking pretty good - slimmed down but no ‘Nicky Clark’ hairdos. Like he and Phil L did together with Lizzy Black and chrome etc. JS was maybe a ‘threat.’ He didnt encroach on Phil’s cool persona/ frontman look and delivery. JS and DC were too similar maybe.

Sykes said that the 'firing Coverdale from his own band' story is a crock. Sykes was an insanely good guitarist and songwriter (and a good singer), and was also very good-looking and charismatic. I'd bet Coverdale was insecure/jealous.
