Long time gone: A quiz about David Crosby's biggest drug binges Try to separate fact from fiction in a haze of heavily mustachioed substance abuse David Crosby by Steven Hyden May 31, 2010 Article Tools * No matter how well Crosby, Stills, And Nash perform this Wednesday at Red Rocks, David Crosby deserves a standing ovation just for showing up. The 68-year-old singer and his signature walrus mustache have somehow made it to senior-citizen status after years of prodigious drug and alcohol abuse that should have killed him dozens of times. Tales of Crosby's drug-related excesses are so over-the-top and flat-out insane that they could never be fabricated. Or could they? See if you can pick out the actual David Crosby drug stories from the ones The A.V. Club made up.
1. Crosby ordered manager David Geffen to fly from Los Angeles to New York City so he could bring him drugs, or else he wouldn't perform at Carnegie Hall. Geffen was caught by police at the airport, but still managed to meet up with Crosby in Manhattan. When Geffen showed up without the drugs, Crosby screamed, "I'm gonna fucking kill you."
2. Crosby did acid with Mama Cass, Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys, and future mass murderer/aspiring pop star Charles Manson at Cass' house in Laurel Canyon in the late '60s. At one point he promised Manson a record contract and allegedly said, "You'll be bigger than Dylan, man!" Then he fell asleep. 3. According to Barney Hoskyns' Hotel California: The True-Life Adventures Of Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Mitchell, Taylor, Browne, Ronstadt, Geffen, The Eagles, And Their Many Friends, Crosby's drug and alcohol abuse in the early '70s "compounded delusions that he had served a tour of duty in Vietnam." He insisted that roadies call him "Lt. Gen. Crosby Esq." and salute him throughout CSNY's 1974 tour. 4. After smoking peyote procured from Donovan with groupie Pamela Des Barres in 1969, Crosby ran naked into the middle of the Sunset Strip and declared, "I am the lord Shiva, the destroyer! Worship my flaming cock!" He quickly disappeared into the nearby Whiskey-A-Go-Go before the police arrived. 5. Crosby, Stills, And Nash performed for Jimmy Carter at the White House in 1977. During a moment alone, they smoked a joint in the Oval Office. 6. In an interview with Creem magazine from the late '70s, Crosby claimed he once got the ultimate high from baking brownies laced with marijuana and cocaine. He made the brownies only once, though, because he subsequently forgot the brand name of the mix, and "the formula has to be exactly right, brother" in order to work. 7. While driving to a protest rally in 1982, Crosby lost control of his car and crashed into a freeway divider. The police found cocaine and a gun in his car. When asked why he was strapped, Crosby replied, "John Lennon." 8. A Rolling Stone story from 1985 reported that Crosby was freebasing $600,000 worth of cocaine a year in the early '80s. The Hells Angels ended up taking ownership of his house in exchange for covering his drug debts. 9. Crosby once sold his Mercedes to a drug dealer for an ounce of coke and $4,000. When the drug dealer overdosed and died, Crosby got the car back. 10. During a court appearance in Texas for a drug charge, Crosby dozed off with his head back and mouth open at the defendant's table. When his snoring became distractingly loud, one of his attorneys had to shake him until he woke up. Answers: 1. True; 2. False; 3. False (It was actually Stills, except for the "Lt. Gen. Esq." part); 4. False; 5. True; 6. False; 7. True; 8. True; 9. True; 10. True

I had the rare privilege of meeting David Crosby in person. It was in 1969 and for a change, the Monterey Pop festival was held at Eselin Institute. It was a gorgeous venue because the bands were all set up around the swimming pool, which was at the edge of the cliffs, so the whole backdrop was just the Pacific Ocean Monterey Bay. Joan Baez was the person that was responsible for the Monterey Pop festival to begin with, and she and Joni Mitchell were there, along with Crosby stills and Nash, accompanied by Dave Mason. Also the Staples singers rounded out the cast. When Crosby, Stills and Nash finish their first set and took a break, David Crosby headed for the main building possibly to go to the restroom, but, he spotted me at the base of the first terrace leaning up against the rock wall smoking a joint. I always had the best joints because I hand rolled them with care. He asked me if he could share a joint with me, to which I replied " sure, have a seat " after a couple joints he got up and wondered toward the main building and I didn't see him again until he went back on for the second set. Steven Stills got into a shoving match with someone who took exception to him wearing his (full length) fur coat. It was quickly broken up by security and the show went on until sundown. I had been hitchhiking down the coast not even knowing that that festival was happening, but when a couple picked me up, the informed me of it and I was excited to go. At the time I still had a press card so I got in free. I lost track of that couple, and at the end of the day, I just headed back to Tahoe, instead of continuing down to the Los Angeles area as originally planned.

David Crosby's first solo album is one of my very favorites. It has Jerry Garcia doing lap steel. It's an exceptional album.

I still love Crosby, Stills, and Nash. I know Neil & his wife are involved in helping handicapped children, which is just wonderful. My little sister was handicapped. She just died in October, so I do appreciate his charitable work. It doesn't matter who did what drugs. My generation was all messed up, including me. I just thank God that we lived through it. It's great that CS & N are still performing. If I get a chance, I'd love to see them AGAIN. (already seen 4 times with different combinations of the above musicians.) They are classy talented musicians. Thanks much for the video

my fave member is Stephen Stills, but the most soulful writer was David Crosby- Long time coming and Almost cut my hair are two of the finest songs ever written and can fit into any genre.

This is THE GUY to write the definitive insider's book on the L.A. music scene of the 60s & 70s. You don't often find pop stars so articulate. What stories he has to tell!

Crosby has always been of my heroes... Such an interresting person.. and was around for so many significant eras of history... his autobiographies are brilliant reads!! Obviously a man of immense intelligence and talent.. And also immense defects of character (aka addiction)...

Jim Morrison is legendary. There’s nobody like em. Just a differnt human being. A free spirit with a trapped soul. So many classic songs. Handsome as ever and died a young man. He is the definition of a rockstar that shined so bright and burned out fast. He’s forever young never gave em self time to fall off and become old and washed up. Died in his prime forever trapped at the age of 27. He’s gone but he never gets old.

Michael McClure said Morrison was the poet of his generation. Crosby is a troubadour. McClure was a top-drawer poet.

Like him or not, but even with all his health issues, Crosby still has an amazing voice and is putting out good songs. His 1st solo album is a classic. It is as good as the early solo efforts of his bandmates which is a damned high bar to jump over because Young, Stills and Nash all had great freshman solo albums. He is a unique artist and certainly had his dark days but the art will stand the test of time. Great interview whether you agree with him or not.

Your best friend or your worst enemy. That's the vibe I get from the guy. Don't know much about his music, other than the standards of CSN you hear on classic rock radio. But I did enjoy listening to this interview. RIP, Mr. Crosby.
