David Goldman: Will China overtake the U.S. as the world's leading superpower?
David Goldman is an American economist, music critic, and author, best known for his series of online essays in the Asia Times under the pseudonym Spengler. He is the Wax Family Fellow at the Middle East Forum, a Senior Fellow at the London Center for Policy Research, and a member of the Board of Advisors of Sino-Israel Government Network and Academic Leadership (SIGNAL).
According to the Claremont Review of Books, the "Spengler" columns in the Asia Times have attracted readership in the millions. His analyses of global events have become highly regarded. Former C.I.A. National Intelligence Council Vice Chairman Herbert E. Meyer said, "Ask anyone in the intelligence business to name the world's most brilliant intelligence service, and we'll all give the same answer: Spengler. David P. Goldman's 'Spengler' columns provide more insight than the CIA, MI6, and the Mossad combined." Goldman concealed his identity under the "Spengler" pseudonym until 2009, when he revealed his identity in the Asia Times article, "And Spengler is..." and the First Things article "Confessions of a Coward".
Goldman regularly appears as a guest on CNBC's Larry Kudlow Program, where he has been an outspoken critic of Federal Reserve efforts to resuscitate the American economy.
He is the author of How Civilizations Die: (And Why Islam is Dying Too) and It's Not the End of the World, It's Just the End of You: The Great Extinction of the Nations.

Without a Doubt, USA will be taken over by China and India; both of which are 5x the size. Culturally, China is a Civilization, practise State-Capitalist, although Communist adopted Eclectic System including Socialist-Democratic Perspective. People are Adaptable some Bilingual, young, Dynamic, Diverse-Hungry; Willingness to Learn and Inward Looking but Competitive. For Example: 8 million Graduates yearly, this number will be added to the Workforce. To be able to manage 1.5 Billion Chinese, Xi JingPing Lifted more than 700 million Citizens out of Poverty, Connected China via HSR (High-Speed Rail) and overseas Countries via BRI (Belt & Road Initiative). These Achievements brings Chinese together Culturally in Union as a Civilization, unlike Western Countries which advocate Democracy in reality Individual Rights. Before 90's, where Internet were not available, face-to-face or calls were the way to connect but Technology today provided Millenia information with touch of a finger. Simon Sinek suggest how they Function in the Workforce tinyurl.com/jkyyfsj. This concept of leading Super power is ambiguous, if it’s dominating others that’s Colonial mindset of the West If the rise of China is spectacular, that’s their motivation to improve their livelihood and prosper thy neighbours The West likes to project their superiority mindset and expecting that China to do the same is erroneous As XJP said “ the world is big enough for all to prosper together “

Asia, and basically the rest of the world, is where Washington tries to play arsonist and fire brigade at the same time. The US as a sea power needs constant conflicts and chaos in Eurasia whereas China as a continental power is interested in peace and stability on the supercontinent to push on with its one belt one road project, which will promote trade and make China and many other countries much less dependent on sea straits and routes controlled by the US.

Remember the China Sea, like Scarborough, Spratley & etc. I hope their be PEACE all around the world.

@Tune Safari I believe in 60 and 40, 40 for US. About the absolute authoritarian part, it's a joke. You just need to look back into world history. No system last forever. Especially extreme ones. If the people are ready to take over China's communism government, it will happen in days, only if they want to. Killing and suppression through violence won't work anymore, it only bring eradication faster on the said "authority". Because as people becomes more intelligent, loyal to a person or a system is becoming a dumber idea. People will be loyal to only themselves, they will want to achieve more, to contribute more to the people they cared, they will want to have a purpose to live their lives, not stupidly obeying orders. If anyone will break free of government easily it will be China. I mean, they have done it multiple times, no system can bind them anymore tbh, them being the people. Chinese people are realistic af and super sensitive when it comes to advantages for themselves cause their whole lives is about competition, all traits are your resource including the privileges and status that comes from family. It's already programmed into their minds. That's why they accept communism so fast, and I can tell if they need to abandon the system they won't hesitate as well. Communism government is beneficial back in those days when immediate actions and absolute order were needed and it's still the best system when they want to have high speed development with only one voice and one direction. When their people develop to the point they are civilized enough and have enough self control, the government will have to change and give way, or else the government will be overthrown by the people. Simple as that. The government will do whatever it wants to restrict but you can't wrap fire with paper, you can't stop a car with praying mantis's limb.

Didn't feel like going through the whole video. I don't think China's goal is to overtake US (almost it just a pebble which is coincidentally on the same direction China's going). Again, this isn't some child game of winning and losing. It's your own people's survival and well being, IN THE LONG RUN, eternity run actually. You guys have to understand the concept of win-win, or else I wouldn't be surprised if other non-superpower countries "overtakes US" while they are just focusing on self improvement.

China has a system in Hong Kong that produces strong results. But the mainland government is insecure because the people of Hong Kong remain beyond their grasp. China wants to seize the wealth of Hong Kong for it's own purposes. But, to do so will require the government to crush Hong Kong. To have the wealth of the city will end the creation of wealth in Hong Kong. And this is why China will never be powerful. They can not resist the impulse to seize wealth. They are too impatient. And this is their downfall.

@@winomaster Hong Kong's failure comes from it's own lack of innovation. Comparer to it's cloest neighbour, Shenzhen, Hong Kong has 0 unicorn start ups in the last 2 decades, and it's "digital harbour" effort failed miserably. It's out-competed by all the neighbor cities because unlike Hong Kong, all other Chinese cities in the region has very long term planning and know exactly where they should be heading. Hong Kong's only role in the last 40 years was the middle man between China and the West. With foreign investment bypassing Hong Kong and going directly to destinations in Chinese cities, Hong Kong's importance in trade gets quickly diminished.

Very earlier nuclear power station programs starts joint venture with France, high speed railway programs also helped by France and Germans. Chinese earlier missile developing programs was led by Mr Qian ( who study and graduated from us university and served USA space and missile programs)....even now there were still got very large numbers of Chinese students every year were sent to study at top uni in USA. Among them(a lot of them) after they graduated they were hired and work in Silicon Valley ( Hi Tech hub )by high tech companies just to gain physical experience of what the learnt from uni, then after few years they brought all those knowledges and experience back to China...

Johney, you are even crazier than John! Christianize the Chinese? Eliminate the ones who are not? Wow, you don't know how hard it was for me trying to believe in Jesus, but failed? Once someone is atheist, it's very hard for him or her to accept any religion. Take it from me, someone who have lived in America for many years, and did tried to convert. It will be much much more difficult to convert someone who lives in China. The simple truth is, Christian religion makes no sense. Bible makes no sense. Your 10/40 plan will fail miserably. History shows that it's the one who had the better technology wins, not the one with better religion. Atheist people are better fit to develop technology. Today China is in a much better position to develop technology than the US. Very soon the US will lose all the edge of science and technologies to China. At that time, it will be China who will do the converting, not the America. And guess what? Convert a Christian to atheist is much easier. All they need to do is to show the person all the truth, and make him realize what actually is the truth.

Before this, UN will throw away its shackle of its current controller (mystery) Babylon the Great (ie Global Central banker Elites, False Jews Zatanic families, deep state controls US congress, numerous secret agencies, secret societies...) UN will strip Babylon naked, no more conspiracy, eat her flesh, take her assets (over half world finance) and burn her. So UN will become a behemoth! UN will lead world into cashless societies, age of Mark. The world will connect via train then in some case hyperloop... The "power that be" its minions influence and work had long ago prepared and ia continuely gear towards this, be sure, it will happen. 吃茶猫 Thank you for taking time to comment on my comments. I agree with you that people should visit China, getting closer to Chinese people and indeed try to understand Chinese history (not from the the prospectives of the West). China is a big country, with a very diverse local cultures and yet a common core value that culminates a continuous history and civilisation. Not even Chinese students or people understand it all. Still Chinese people learn to respect and live with one another. This is unique to Chinese civilisation which is inclusive, embraces and respects the value of differences. I think we should encourage more westerners like Mr Goldman to talk about China publicly. Having public opinions about China is good, because this is how we generate discussions and mutual understanding. There is no right or wrong perception. It’s a matter of how we learn from the perception in question. A rational person would learn one day that their perception is or isn’t aligned with consensus. Even consensus changes with time. PS. I have been visiting China since 1987, had two research projects in China (1989 &1997), and witnessed tremendous changes over the last 30 years. Each and every visit to Chia, I learned more about this great civilisation and Chinese people, and also her challenges. I was in China last two weeks, visiting three world heritage sites.

@@bh551 I agree the more rational discussion the better mutual understanding will be generated. However, such discussion should be built upon the truth or objective perception of truth. Sorry I can not find those in most western observers, and they are more like promoting their own agenda or implanting the wrong perception among their society. Take one for example, one famous Chinese study intellectual explains China( 中国)self-named as centre of the world. If you have a little knowledge about Chinese history , you would not have such obviously wrong interperatation. Chinese believe the world composed of three layers, the sky, the earth, the people in the middle. This is why China( 中国) called as such. We both know in the west there was long-built Eurocentrism, but there is no Chinacenrism as they are implying to , at least not by China's country name. Anyway, it is nice talk to you and good luck.

吃茶猫 I think your perspective of “China” (中国) in this comment is very helpful to me and makes sense as well. I can’t recall how my school teacher taught me. Over the years, I came to understand that China as we know it today is called differently according to the ruling dynasty at the time; for example, the last dynasty is called “大清帝国” (The Great Qing Empire). Post Qing, it’s called “民国时期” or “中华民国” and now called “中国” (China), an abbreviation for People’s Republic of China (中华人民共和国). To my mind, we are ”华夏子孙”, children of Emperor Huang. The key here is we are torch holders of a five thousand years of continuous civilisation. We have historical responsibility to pass the torch to next generations and to advance our national and the global interests. To achieve this, we must communicate to the world (not just the West). To communicate with others, we must first listen, respect the view of others, and understand others perspectives. Of course, we must also communicate our principles of value during the conversations. I think each and every Chinese will benefit from going overseas to see the world for themselves and form an informed opinion about the West and the world. It should be two-way process. Only when we do so, we live in “Ivory Tower” or “井底之蛙”.
@lixwh

@@bh551 Reality is Chinese know better about the west than they know about us. "live in ivory tower'井底之蛙, on the contrary, are better discription of those who are reluctant to appreciate China's progress and Chinese culture. To us, it is not necessarily a bad thing if we look from compitition piont of view. I fully agree the world is bigger than the west alone and little has been done to strengthen our understanding about Africa , west asia, latin America in terms of our universtiy education. I personally keep open mind to the western opinion , in a way of critical thinking of course. People like him can't seem to accept a scenario when people's of the global south reach a standard of living equal to that of the West/US.

Saying Chinese hate their Kings or President is so wrong. Compared with the Japanese "Emperor", the Chinese "Emperor" emphasizes more on first doing something for all people, then gaining the support of all people, and finally becoming a "god". In short, he is more inclined to "people" This is what the Chinese often say: "Man can conquer nature." Therefore, judging from the name alone, in Japan it is the "god" who creates everything and gives it to all people, while in China it is the emperor who creates everything and gives it to all people. Therefore, the rulers of ancient China who used the term "emperor" to call themselves "emperors" can be convincing, but the prerequisite is that the emperor has indeed done a lot of useful things for the people in order to gain everyone's support. Otherwise, they will still be revolted. For example, this phenomenon occurs in Japan. almost none. (Google translate from Google).

While it’s a truly insightful speech, certain analytical conclusions draw upon Chinese culture and history, both ancient times and present, seems to be based on exaggeration and elaboration if not downright fabrication. The speaker has obviously done extensive research on Chinese society, but his angle of interpretation feels more politically motivated above all else. His claim on “One Child Police” been the suppressive policy specially designed for “peasant class” is especially absurd. Considering the policy partially exempt residents of rural area and minority ethnicity families of the restriction of “One Child”. It primarily serves as a mean of population control based on ecological protection, that the local environment simply cannot support should the population keep growing uncontrollably.

Song Zhang No way, he is plainly stupid and think of things in the bad way. Well, cannot blame him, because US only have 200 years of history, the way US is dealing with internal issue is just suicidal to my opinion. Whilst China always have government which is great in dealing with internal conflicts. US always blames other for their problem. Freedom is good. Democracy is not a too bad system. But freedom and democracy is not going to put food on the table. When people are not feed, even good people will go angry at the government. US is asking for trouble.

Song Zhang This so-call professor is a fool on Chinese and our culture. He might read a lot, but only learned the wrong things. Hong Shi Long or short history doesn't matter. Old China had 2000 years of history but got beaten bad in almost every aspect. American history has shining points in the beginning. It became the model of democracy in a very short time. And the new China has only 68 years, and the real development started only 40 years ago. The biggest mis-conception of most Chinese is that they think they are superior because China has 2000 years of history. No, the history itself proves over and over again. It matters only if you are stronger, not older. Freedom and democracy are great ideas from America. They can greatly boost the creativity and productivity of a nation, as the history had shown. However, American's freedom and democracy were lost long time ago, right after JFK was assassinated, and the nation fell into a oligarchy state. The actual power is controlled by few wealthy families, and serves only to the campaign donors. Today, as we has seen over and over again, money has completely taken over democracy. Therefore, American history also serves as a great lesson of what not to do. The ideal China strategy is continuing the development, and give freedom and democracy to their people over time. This way we can have a long lasting economy development. Today's China has too much control over political issues. There is actually nothing to be so afraid of.

But in the case of China, no matter how equal the system can guarantee, if the total amount is insufficient, people will suffer all the same. To China, efficiency is overwhelmingly more important than equity, namely F and D.

David Goldman is correct about the old China and Chinese in general. However Mao has transformed China into a modern China of Confucius with Marx Christian values culture that China never have in her 5000 yrs civilization. Today unofficially, 10 % of Chinese are Christian. Again, that is a first in Chinese civilization. To me, “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” is better describe about today Chinese than today Americans. We Americans need to confess and repent now, for we had been unfaithful to our Father God and our fellowmen.

David can think like a Chinese heheh. For the religion issue, I think China will probably go harder into reviving traditional religions (though maybe not Buddhism. but more shamantic folk religions of the past. ) Taiwan is often a useful gauge into what Chinese society alternative could be (for better or worse ) and both they and the overseas chinese community are huge into local temples (it's rather comparable to the classical antiquity religions in a way. ) The good thing about them is that they offer spirituality without the same sort of large organization that can effect a national level . I do think David points out a very key issue in that the Chinese R&D are in a way that's much more dangerous and powerful than people seem to realize, even a decade ago people thought Chinese couldn't do any sort of innovation ( with some serious degree of stereotype and racism involved. ) and now people are really moving the goal post big time when in fact if you follow some of the stuff they say their doing, many could easily be huge game changers.

Very insightful view of China and world, explaining the motivation for Belt and Road Initiative(22:15). Mr. Goldman brought out Tang dynasty among 8 other dynasties which were a dominant, peaceful society that China aspires for under Chairman Xi. Goldman's analysis of Chinese language for me showed its superiority over alphabetical languages. Its language is the cement that enabled it‘s robust existence over 4700 years. Never the less Mr. Goldman is an American imperialist. History show us China did and would again dominate the world peacefully as it did centuries before.

Fundamental production : Iron, metals, fabrication of very durable sturdy goods, energy and agricultural production is why the USA has declined. One has to simply use KZfaq and google all the 'hell holes' of the 3rd World and what do you find ? Gleaming new cities and suddenly on see's the truth that NYC is a 'hell hole' in comparison. Rebuilding our cities using American raw materials and labor. The best tax INCREASE occurs with FULL EMPLOYMENT via wage taxation. An issue America has is that 'no more taxes' means less government services and employment, less grants, less multi-state ventures (i.e. our Interstate Highway systems). You can not have (1) no more taxes (2) government services (3) government grants and (4) government employment. The other major US failure : we do not manage American human resources AT ALL....we are absolute tyrannical dinosaurs in the area of enhancing human productivity.

If China does overtake the West, it will be due in no small part to the sterling assistance that the West has given China. What did we give China? 1. Open markets across the West. 2. Direct inward investment of western factories and services.. 3. All kinds of manufacturing technology. 4. Educational assistance with so many Chinese students allowed to study whatever they want in western third-level institutions. So many goods are made in China. But it would not be a great exaggeration to say that modern China was made in the West. The West would hardly care if the world's leading industrial and economic power was a democratic one. But finally having a dictatorship as the leading global power, after some 500 years of western dominance, would be a very disturbing specter and a grim reality for the free world.
