Say Hello, Wave Goodbye Lyrics:
Standin' in the door of the Pink Flamingo cryin' in the rain
It was a kind of so-so love
And I'm gonna make sure it doesn't happen again
You and I had to be the standing joke of the year
You were a run-around, a lost and found and not for me, I feel
Take your hands off me, hey
I don't belong to you, you see
And take a look in my face for the last time
I never knew you, you never knew me
Say hello goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
We tried to make it work
You in a cocktail skirt and me in a suit but it just wasn't me
You're used to wearing less
And now your life's a mess, so insecure you see
Well I put up with all the scenes
And this is one scene that's going to be played my way
Take your hands off me, hey
I don't belong to you, you see
And take a look in my face, for the last time
I never knew you, you never knew me
Say hello, goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Under the deep red light I can see the make up slidin' down
Well hey little girl you will always make up
So take off that unbecoming frown
As for me, well I'll find someone who's not goin' cheap in the sales
A nice little housewife
Who'll give me a steady life and not keep going off the rails
Take your hands off me, hey
I don't belong to you, you see
And take a look in my face, for the last time
I never knew you, you never knew me
Say hello, goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Say hello, wave goodbye
Goodbye
Say goodbye
Say goodbye
We were born before the waves
Who are we to understand?
We were born before the waves
Say goodbye
Through the rain, hail, sleet and snow
Say goodbye
Get on the train, train, train
And say goodbye
Say goodbye
Say goodbye
Say goodbye
In the wind and the rain now, darling
Say goodbye
In the wind and the rain now, darling

Hello and yes totally adore this song! I was so blessed to finally see David’s anniversary tour in Dublin last year. And he only brought on Mark Almond for this and then Tainted Love! Wonderful end to a motorcycle tour of Ireland.

We used to visit my dad every day in the hospice when he had cancer in 2001. My brother used to played this album on the drive.. We got a call from a nurse asking us to come in right away as he was weakening fast... This was the song that played as we pulled into the car park... He died that afternoon... Still chokes me up when I hear this.

For a long time I had no idea this was a cover of a Soft Cell song. I heard the original and liked it, and still do, but this version is beautiful. Would that it carried on for another ten minutes. Summer of 2005 I played this album non-stop, saw him that December in Brixton. A year I look back on very fondly indeed.

Bought this album twenty years ago as a lot of yous here, what a gem! One of those intimate encounters with your inner you, cut straight to the heart and it still does, especially this song, cuts real deep, there's such a melancholy to it. Holds a genuine place this one. Gonna listen to it with my 8-year old chérie. David Gray, cheers from France, many thanks

I used to listen to White Ladder a lot and this song in particular. It's a very weird experience listening again after so many years. 20 years ago I felt so connected to the main character, but with a fresh perspective the protagonist of the song sounds quite manipulative and mean. "A nice little housewife, who'll give me a steady life", "I'll find someone who's not going cheap in the sales", "your life's a mess, so insecure you see". It seems like he is projecting so much of his own anger and sadness on this other character. It makes me reevalute my past relationships, and one relationship in particular. I used to think she was the one driving me crazy and not the other way around and now I'm not so sure. I guess we were just both not good for eachother. After 12 years of big ups and downs I've managed to cut ties with this woman a couple of years ago but she is still on my mind once every while and while we could never be friends again, I really hope that she is very happy and is living her best life.. And I hope she is safe and in love.. Ultimately listening to this song again after so many years gives me a feeling of sadness. Where has life gone all these years? I guess I am also happy to experience that I have changed over these last twenty years (which is good) and have gained more insight, self-reflection and patience... Growing old is weird.. To infinity and beyond!

I agree! This is one of the best audio CDs I ever listened to.I remember listening to a thirty-second preview for a slightly different version of "Please Forgive Me" in MusicMatch Jukebox on my HP Pavilion 710 CTO PC (which was my first HP PC) with Windows XP Home Edition on it back in 2002. I never listened to the full-length version of it until I found it here on KZfaq as a music video a decade later in 2012.

Take a look, in my face, for the last time. I never knew you, you never knew me, say 'hello/goodbye'. Say hello and wave goodbye. I think he's talking about the instance of human bonding, where it is awesome and then it turns sour and and it all seems to happen in one single instance. The man is a genius and I only have my own interpretation of his music - I just hope that everyone else listening enjoys it in whatever way.

David you are a true talent and this song speaks to many men. Who thought they had their forever. And discovered. It was not. I have met so many countless male friends who experienced the same. And in their Take Two, have found someone who didn't betray them, who truly loved them. That is a testimony to those who betrayed their true love, who discarded them so selfishly, and many times, their entire family. To all the men of the world who get to meet their actual true love, after such a failure, not of their choosing. All the best to those men. There is hope. There is true love out there.
