The One I Love Lyrics:
Gonna close my eyes
Girl and watch you go
Running through this life darling
Like a field of snow
As the tracer glides
In its graceful arc
Send a little prayer out to ya
'Cross the falling dark
Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love
Perfect summer's night
Not a wind that breathes
Just the bullets whispering gentle
'Mongst the new green leaves
There's things I might have said
Only wish I could
Now I'm leaking life faster
Than I'm leaking blood
Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love
Don't see Elysium
Don't see no fiery hell
Just the lights up bright baby
In the bay hotel
Next wave coming in
Like an ocean roar
Won't you take my hand darling
On that old dancefloor
We can twist and shout
Do the turtle dove
And you're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love

As a British ex-military man, I find this track extremely moving and contemplative. My action was in 1982 and it still affects me to this day. It's good to have music that makes us stop for a moment and realise just how lucky we are, and to remember those that we left on patrol. Excellent track Mr Gray!

You the second ex army to have written on this and I suppose it's alot of meaning to every one: but I can't imagine what you have seen or any army man :I was suppose to join army to be medic nurse but things happend and could go :I done training just not enough due to health problems :I was only 17 going on 18 and often wander what my life would be like if I would have joined army :chin up sir you served country all the best 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️

@@catherinegallagher1101 Thanks for your reply and kind words Catherine. I was actually Royal Navy, but did two tours down in the Falklands, having been attacked and sunk by Argentine aircraft the first time around and then volunteering to return to Port Stanley as soon as I could. Brothers in Arms by Dire Straights also has the same effect on me, which was penned by Mark Knopfler at the time it was all going on. Follow your dreams! All the best!

I was a Corpsman (combat medic for the US Marine Corps) and this one always made me think of a man dying on the battlefield, with his last thoughts on this mortal plane being of his wife. I suppose we've both seen some things which make us relate to this song more than most.

When my first child was born, she had a lot of complications and spent most of her first 6 months in different hospitals. Some weren't close to home, and I had to drive hours to see her every night. I played this album every time, and it got me there (the hospital) and through the tough times... She eventually got better and got to come home, 13 years later and she's become a beautiful young lady, who appreciates life and Everything she has. To the families I met that didn't get to take there babies home, I send Nothing but love and positive thoughts. I'll never forget you and the support. I love you all, and I love you too David Gray. Life is beautiful, especially in slow motion...

When this song first aired I was a few years out of the army. My career was brought to an abrupt end by bipolar disorder. I watched on the television as my friends from what had been my old life were sent to fight. I thought of the tracer and the falling darkness. I wondered what became of them all. Some died. Some prospered. Some became drunks. Separated from that community by shame I will never know them again.

Dear Sean Fries...you're suffering and these songs can be very healing too.....I understand, as my husband also suffers from PTSD, as a now retired, Lt Colonel and 11 deployments over the years the Military completely changed him....he too thought that life was far too difficult to go on, but through faith and hope, he's grow to be an even better man because of the experiences and difficulties he faced. I pray for you, I pray for your out come to be positive too...you are important and you can make a difference to many more with your life. Find out what your purpose is. Share what's really on your heart. Ask for what you need...people can and will help you if you ask and be faithful and truthful.... blessings to you♡

I think this line is very important to the message of the song. I believe it's coming from a dying man who believes that his efforts and will carry weight, hence the line. His dying thoughts are to say, "Let them know how important you are to me, so they know to be gentle with".

Unbelievably talented guy who never got the plaudits he truly deserved. Hidden meanings behind everything he wrote. What a voice...legend

A friend just posted Babylon video on FB so here I am, many years after these posts, to weigh in and express my absolute love of David Gray's music and of the man himself because he IS his music. In my judgement not enough people know his genius. But, maybe, you know, I could've very wrong. The One I Love still gives me goosebumps 💙

Truly one of the great under-rated song writers of his generation. Like most my intro was "Babylon," but his music is much deeper. A British version of Warren Zevon. Two of the most underrated song writers of their generation(s). Both great at capturing the human experience.

Saw him live once here in VA. Finished with Please Forgive Me...the ending was amazing with that driving guitar & drums...even though they had just brought in new drummer, was still fantastic

Wow it's about death and you had it at your wedding? It's a song that a soldier should have playing at his funeral dedicated to those he left behind.

When a musician don't have to dress up in outrageous costumes to sell their music you know they are making good music that will last

You feel better now??? Cause I can think of some far worse. And yet it still doesn't make their music anymore important than anybody else's.
