No one ever knows if a show is going to succeed of fail while it's being made, but looking back now David Harbour has a pretty good idea about why "Stranger Things" resonated so well with audiences.

I just nod along agreeing with him. Season 1 particularly feels like that. You can feel it's a labor of love.

god, I'm glad I just stumbled on this channel, the content's so good, totally the best youtube interview show I've ever seen. I'm tired of seeing great actors on WIRED getting dumb questions asked

The moral of the story is that, hard work makes great things. So get out there and work hard.

Hard, competent work makes great things. I can work really hard on a mud hill, but that's not going to make it amount to anything.

2:21 "We went there in a way that I'm really proud of..." And that is why it is great. Even while you were doing it, you knew that it might flop, but you threw yourself into it on a personal level and all of that deep connection can be felt in the end product. Yeah, the themes, the music, the sets and props all bring back memories or evoke responses in people, but it was the acting (not even the story) that made the show very real for people. There was no feeling that this was someone "acting" like a person in a script. You felt like you had a little window into the minds and lives of real people who were all going through something amazing, moving, life changing. The show draws you into a very believable feeling/vibe while still managing to be campy and fun. It really feels like your life but with monsters and sci-fi stuff added for effect. You have a reason to be proud. It is not the epitome of art, but rather (to me) something better. It manages to be touching, funny, thrilling, mundane, easy to identify with, hard to believe, the good guys win (most of the time), and the bad guys are not always bad guys after all. (See Alexei in Season 3.) Like life, there are shades of gray even when things seem black and white and that is cool. I, for one, am floored by the reception that this show has gotten. I thought I was one of only a few geeks that was going to fall head over heels in love with it. You all deserve the praise and fame that you are getting for your work. Oh, and PS. I'm glad you didn't kill yourself! (See other parts of this interview.) What a loss that would have been!

Kinda shocking; at first I thought maybe it's because of the development hell that a lot of productions go through, that they actually think the battle is over when making it and relax a step too soon. But what shocked me (however softly expressed) is the cynical / disrespectful / lazy approach he describes as seemingly common, which to my mind might not be a guarantee of failure but provides more opportunity for it than necessary. A good approach in life is to *take pride in your work* - whatever that work is; & it's whilst OK have a plan, don't have an expectation. Doing the best job you can at any given point rarely has a downside, even if the upside might time a while to become apparent The film critic Mark Kermode has a good rule of thumb: the more fun the cast have crew have during the making is inversely proportional to the audience will have watching it Two factors in Stranger Things need mentioning, the quality of writing / characters and yes the performances, but the kids especially: without them it could not have succeeded, and their performances are great, full stop - not great 'for a child actor'. Trying to think of anything as good between Sixth Sense & this

Season 1 - Amazing Season 2 - Decent, with alot of stupid decisions, like the entire Chicago episode. Season 3 - Cartoony, with no mystery or shred of the original identity, and every character just quips and bickers the entire season.

@@apolloptx I agree that the first season is probably my favorite, the 2nd is close in tone, they really went in another direction with the 3rd one. I don't mind it, I'll take season 3 over the chicago episode. I wonder what season 4 will be like, at least they are trying new things.
