Wow, I don't think I've ever seen someone put so much of their own character into a piece than what he did. He plays because he loves it, a passion that every musician needs, and it shows in your performance. Whether or not you miss a note here or there will not define your music, your passion defines you as a player and performer (though as a caveat, you still need the skill to technically play the piece). Imagine a speaker with immaculate enunciation and a speaker who maybe faulters or stutters every once in awhile. In the end, what moves the crowd will always be his passion and his poetry.

David’s genius playing and his heart pouring out as he does so takes me to such an unforgettable dimension where for those few minutes my stresses and pains completely disappear and I find myself smiling so long my cheeks hurt with chills all over.. and mesmerized. So grateful for the privilege of hearing him play and share his passion and talent with us.

A genius! Liszt apparently didn't object to a free approach to his Rhapsodies. This is the most recreative performance I've ever heard. He relives the music rather than it being a museum piece set in stone. Remarkable.

Bless David, he is an example of triumph over great adversity. He plays more eccentric as he is getting older, he segments his playing and attaches particular details to each bit. He still glances at his audience while playing, he always was insecure of what others thought of him while playing.

David Helfgott..man...I wouldn't ever compare him to any other living piano player. The music is inside his head, and he plays it like he feels when he sit at the piano. In many ways he's more "free" than so many others. When all is said, and all i done he's still just "David with a piano and music that he loves". I don't ask for anything more.. It's wonderful!

Excellent comment, indeed, I think D. H. is making very clear that music is a dialogue, and dialogues are not about pronouncing every word in perfect tonality and perfect accent. They are about communicating and understanding. This guy is understanding the notes and making clear which ones are more important. The piece then becomes alive and clear and stops being an exercise of perfection to become a piece of communication!!

This man has played this flawlessly in the past and this is his improvised version now. It is still amazing. Lang Lang comparison is just ludicrous given that this is all natural from a man that has been down a road or two. It is inspirational on so many levels. Please upload all there is. Every student and everyone, for that matter, should see this.

It's not just a music piece with him, it's a whole adventure! Sometimes he might sound as if he loses and regains focus, but I believe his expressive abilities are rich and highly creative. I'd listen to anything he plays.
@andreasvandieaarde2 жыл бұрын
I just watched a newer performance of him playing this (I think it's newer, the upload is slightly later than this one) and he plays it incredibly differently to this rendition. I love his spontaneity when it comes to how to play this piece - even if it's just this one, I see a lot of freedom in his playing, and that's quite inspirational. His rendition/s are my favorites for this reason - he simply does what comes to him. Music is all about this, in my estimation.

I am not a trained muso, I know there are people out there that can knock this sort of stuff out by the age of 10 but what Dave does is bring character and feeling to the piece. It is all well and good 'playing' a piece but it takes more to 'feel' a piece!

Davis is a really nice person who plays the piano. He has wit, compassion, intelligence and a great passion for Tea. If you ever get the chance to talk with him pay particular to the very first thing he say's to you, It will be a very intuitive gift for you regarding how you are in life. and he also has a memory to die for. Peace.

While it may sound a little silly to say, I had never even thought of what kind of music I like to listen to, let alone even fathomed trying to play any instrument before watching Shine as a child. I was fascinated of course, and it lead me to learning the piano. That changed my life and I cant imagine it otherwise. rather, I don't want to imagine it otherwise. People still give me funny looks when I try to talk to them about classical music from any period, as people have done to me for the last 20 years. I suppose what I am trying to convey is that this man changed my life. my existence is more fulfilling once his story became the catalyst that drew me to music. If you see him around, I ask you to please let him know what he still means to everyone like myself whos lives he has shaped inadvertantly. Much love.

More imagination in his little finger than most people ever could dream of- I mean even most musicians. And I hope to God I can ever do trills the way he does-(and some other things) I think his technique is pretty enviable. And you are supposed to be able to be free and invent when you play these. It's not like some of the more formal pieces.

His family have come out and said a large part of that movie is inaccurate and was controlled by his 2nd wife. His dad apparently wasn’t abusive, but quite lenient according to his siblings. He was also welcomed home from overseas with open arms and even lived in the family home for a while. His sister has a lot of the correspondence between David and their late father, but she even pointed out that his 2nd wife (Gillian) was mostly in charge of the movie and would threaten to sue them everytime they tried to step in. They feel like she’s taking advantage of a man who is mentally ill (he has schizoaffective disorder)

Thanks to science we've stopped demonising mental health issues and started to trying to understand them and help people who suffer from them. This is a perfect example of how people with these disorders can still be talented, passionate, david loves to hug people yet his disorder is commonly associated with withdrawal from society. . David is quirky, talented and endearing and there's nothing wrong with being different.
