I love how he’s so gentle with flipping the pages 🥺

I was completely absorbed by every image on every page. It is a reminder to me that any single thing in this world can become art, it’s all in the way we see it. This is a remarkable sketchbook.

no it's all in the way he draws it, not how we see it

This was so inspiring (and relaxing)! I love the fact that there's no narration and no music. He just let the imagery speak for itself. Just wonderful!

One of the simplest and most interesting videos on the internet. Its a mirror for the simplicity of Hockney's draftsmanship actually.

Makes me want to pick up my pen and inks and make a point of drawing something at least every other day. Like that I can hear him breath as he flips through. Very peaceful. And then the loud intrusions to snap me out of it. The whole video is art. Thankyou for posting and Thankyou David 🌻

It was 6 minutes and 21 seconds of pure joy and enlightenment. What David Hockney inspires me the most, beyond his close inspections of art history and immense curiosity, is his endless passion about making images. That is something I have had as a kid but lost because of other occupations. I have recently decided to quit my job and dedicate myself to this passion. Thank you for sharing this video.

SO nice, seeing an artist still showing to the world that to draw is an unique tool - brain, eyes, hands, pleasure, sensations, and also a post-aesthetic pleasure to the viewer.

I have a mountain of old sketchbooks, somewhere down the road I stopped using sketchbooks and now I use any old piece of paper and shove them all into a folder. Thanks for the inspiration to get back to sketchbooks. I’m going to get myself a new one but not any old sketchbook, it will be the size of a shoe box.

I have loved David Hockney for as far back as I can remember engaging with art. He is one of my idols, a true genius, and probably our greatest living artist. I once had the pleasure of meeting him at the Barbican Centre when, for some reason, he suddenly made his way over to the group of people I was with. I thought I had died and gone to heaven!!!

Loved the guiet simplicity of this view into the private space of a great painter. It was a real privilege. A finished and framed painting in a public gallery is an artist with their clothes on. A view of their sketch book is like seeing them naked. It's personal and private. He is exposing himself in such an intimate and vulnerable way. I feel privileged to have had a peek into his soul where he works out his thoughts and feelings. It pained me to see his arthritic hands, especially the left one. Not to put down foot and mouth painters, but an artist needs, not only a good eye, but also a flexible hand. Sketch on everyone.

Hi Iris ... I noticed on your "About" page that you are an artist, too. Would love to see some of your artwork if you've posted them somewhere. I imagine as a horticulturalist, plants and nature might be a subject you create art about. Another question (two actually) I have ... did you record the video of Hockney sharing his sketchbook and are you friends with him?

5:13 one of your best!!! I'm working on draws in human body and unless it seems contradictory, including a crowded space or a people reunion in a drawing, help to give vitality to every picture....Drawing more people in one picture give me a vision of what is my progress, not everybody are "good draw" but if I succes in only one ....it give power to continue improving.
