That's what I love about mountaineering. No matter how old you are, if you love the mountains and the sport, you'll fully live it. So many people don't understand it, don't understand how you could put yourself in that kind of danger. But every good mountaineer does it for themselves, and only themselves

Corey Rich is one of them and worked with Lama many times before his passing. He has a new book called “Stories Behind the images” that goes into what it takes to make some of these photographs. Very good read IMO.

l just started watching video's on mt. everest,and became interested in the sherpas...and noticed all theses other video's on different climber's....so l saw a video with david lama and wanted to know more about him.....and was reading the comment section and saw all these 'rip' words!....is he dead!!....l was so disappointed.....he was so young...he left behind some great alpine video's for us to admire......

I've to be sick...the first thing I noticed starting to watch this clip remembering this great man has been the speck of a bugger in his eye. I felt miserable than I thought to console me that this made him to my eye more "human" and frail like everybody else

I don't know man, I don't know many people who've died playing poker.... judging by the death ratio of climbing the mountains these guys climb, I'm gonna go ahead and say it's much closer to Russian Roulette than poker. You may want to lie and tell yourself it's not because you like what you do, but statistics tell the whole story. RIP dude. Nasty game of poker you folks are playing. I'll go ahead and sit this one out.

so these guys take bolts with them and just leave them in there? is must be very expensive sport taking new bolts every time? how do they even start? put a bolt 1m up thread the rope to the person down the bottom?

there are not bolts on cerro torre, he would've had to use removable gear like cams and nuts. there is a clip of him from his childhood pounding in a bolt, but those are mostly for sport routes, and he was actually creating/bolting the route himself

Todd Mulligan you cant compare a free solo route with an alpine style route. David probably could have climbed El Capitan clean but it would have been to risky for him to climb it free solo unless he would have put a lot of effort an preperation in it. On the other side there is a very slim chance that Alex Hunold could climb Cerro Torre in alpine style no mather how much work he would put into it. David was probably the most talentet climber ever to live and even he needed a lot of preperation to do it.

He climbs for fun and he pays for it with PR garbage. Good for him, but shame on the people who buy the PR nonsense and the pseudo philosophy. Climbing mountains is hard, but so is getting up every day in the morning and going to work. It is just a part of life.
