These last two weeks since Eddie's passing, I've been listening to Van Halen a lot, more than I ever did before, and man, I used to think it was all Eddie, but they were all exceptionally good. Growing older, it's much harder to keep your voice in shape than it is to keep up with any other instrument, but DLR is still a true frontman. Gotta give him credits for that. 😊

Having recently seen an interview with Eddie in which he talks about his dad, I found myself really appreciating Dave's story about him here. Best place / audience he ever played for, indeed. Imagining that audience huddled underground, not knowing if the next bomb dropped by Hitler's goons would be their end, brought a tear to my eye. Because fear is one of the most destructive emotions on Earth. And even in the face of this horror, Mr. Van Halen's audience chose to laugh, sing and dance like there was no tomorrow. Which ties in with my other favorite bit from Dave's monologue here- "Listen to as many songs as you possibly can (so that) 10, 20 or 40 Summers from now, when you hear that song, it will take you RIGHT BACK'. David Lee Roth has done and experienced more in his time here on Earth than some folks would if they had TWENTY lifetimes. Judging by the fact that he chose to share these particular bits of story / wisdom with the audience, it sounds to me as if he is VERY conscious of his own mortality. He KNOWS we only get one shot at this, so he has chosen to LIVE. Okay, so he still drinks. But if you pay attention, he does NOT down the whole bottle in one shot, as he might have in his younger days. Instead, he takes a few small sips, ENJOYS them, screws the top back on & puts the bottle down. Is the harmonica playing awful? Well, maybe not "Bob Dylan awful", but not the greatest representation of his talent, to be fair. It honestly sounds like he might even be trying it out for the first time. But it is better to try and fail than to NOT try and succeed. Does he talk too much? Not if you pay attention to what he is saying. I get the sense that, while his mannerisms APPEAR to be those of a typical "burned out rock god", he is anything but that. He seems to not have an "off" switch for his brain, which is absolutely SWAMPED with an incredible volume of thoughts and EXPERIENCES. Because he has always paid attention to what he sees and hears, and has a NEED to unload it. This can be mistaken for "someone who loves to hear himself talk"- he very well might have a bit of that, but I don't think ego is the driving force in his case. I find him fascinating, and I believe if others could re-think their perception of him, they might, too.

So many songs "take me back", some happy, my idiotic naivete, sadness. It's my emotional release. The first song I remember really liking was "96 Tears" around the ages between 5 or 7, while holding my father's hand as my family walked in a tourist village in St. Augustine, FL. A local band was playing it and my brother began dancing with a little girl - a happy "take back". Music has been an intergal part of my life from that day on. Missing my loving Daddy now. happy "take backs" his handkerchief everytime I cried, watching him shave his face, sitting near as he repaired cars or anything else- (electrician - there wasn't anything he couldn't repair). One more song -my Dad- "Working in a Coal Mine" My mother said he carried me on his shoulders as he walked through the woods to hunt. We all have are lists. Hoping everyone's are mostly full of love and joy.

This is tremendous!!! David Lee Roth is our Louis Prima man!!! Even Edward understands Roth's contribution....there is no Love songs, no politics, just pure fun and great musicianship!! There will NEVER be another team Like David and Edward.....PERIOD.

Cool video. I just heard this song played by a cover band in San Jose. So I wanted to see the original and ran into this video. Thanks for sharing!

I give Dave all the props some stars don't even make it to his age like Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison , Prince , and he's still rocking but what I didn't know is that he could get down on guitar and harmonica that's a super plus

I didn't know that David Lee Roth could play guitar or harmonica.
@mrnemo046 жыл бұрын
Actually he can't. The guitar is tuned Dolly Parton style, because he doesn't know a chord!

He's already said he's taking guitar lessons when he was younger he knows how to play.

@@mrnemo04 actually he can he said this in an interview with Joe Rogan
@mrnemo045 жыл бұрын
@@Twobarpsi It's not apparent in this performance. He doesn't play a single chord, nearly correctly. And his Guitar is tuned to accommodate this. He's just putting his finger across the fret board, and sliding up and down. The way a 2 year old does the first time they pick up a guitar. Ask Ed if Dave can play Guitar. lol.

@@johncaldwell1625 it's highly likely but David Lee Roth also said that he was influenced by blues and jazz and that sometimes he would take some of their music and play it and that could have been the case as well but I watched a great interview with him and Joe Rogan the other day you should check it out thanks for watching appreciate you
