For my generation, Carson-Letterman was back-to-back comedy gold on late night television, and whenever I knew Letterman was visiting The Tonight Show (20 plus times), I made a point to stay awake instead of just setting the VCR. I was lucky enough to catch Carson's appearances on Letterman's shows too. It was a different era of late-night TV.

Agreed. The Next Phase came when it was Dave and T.S. on CBS. The two BEST hours of Late Night Television in the Mid-90's.

A friend and I worked at different gas stations of the same company. We'd get off at the same time and meet at Country Sweet Chicken and Ribs. We'd take our orders back to my house and watch Letterman. Best times to remember.

Johnny admired Dave because of how quick-witted Dave is and how they could easily play off each other. Their minds worked together like that.

I really like the warmth and friendship these two men shared. All of their appearances together are just great. The whole car thing, Johnny's appearances on Dave's show after he retired...all great.

I didn't watch Carson, but tuned into David Letterman starting in 2011 and watched his show on and off until around 2014. Late night shows are all political and it gets boring after a while. Letterman was my Johnny Carson you could say. This interview between Dave and Johnny is purely funny and cool.

God I wish we had hosts nowadays like Carson and Letterman.....many of the hosts nowadays, they just aren't as funny, smooth or professional - alot of times, they seem like they are just rapd firing for laughs. These pros are such a joy to watch. I also enjoyed Arsenio and Charlie Rose

it's funny. Paul Newman ended up being what Dave called "a friend of the show" when he moved to CBS. Regis was another one and also Tony Randall. Paul would just "be in the audience" or some silly thing. Good memories. Dave also ended up with the Bobby Rahal as co owner of a racing team. Rahal Letterman Ranigan aka BMW Team RLL, as it is now known. yes, I'm a Letterman fan...

Min 4:00 onwards: Dave lost his (relative modest, compared to Johnny's) Malibu home in his divorce to his first wife. Johnny had many divorces with such settlements. This was the greatest example of these two titans knowingly amusing themselves equally as they're amusing the public. Testament to their special relationships and greatness.

Carson is still the king. Even now. Letterman should have been his replacement but would have never filled his shoes.
@35diamondgirl3 жыл бұрын
Jerry Seinfeld said in the American Masters/PBS Carson documentary that when Carson left, he took The Tonight Show with him. Seinfeld has a point, and in retrospect it's why I'm glad Letterman defected to CBS (NBC had wanted to keep Letterman at 12:30 after naming Leno as host of The Tonight Show). Letterman's Late Night on NBC had already established him as a groundbreaking comic, but the 11:30 time slot on CBS allowed him to go just a bit broader and get out from under the shadow of The Tonight Show (where a bland Leno did not break any new comedic ground, as opposed to Carson, who had built on different Tonight Show templates created by Steve Allen and Jack Paar and loosely melded them together).

Wow. Alternate opinion, here. Letterman was a genius. Very complex dude. I'm not sure he has the same success if he lands on Tonight Show. In the end, Leno fit better on that show. More gentle. If Letterman gets that gig, the Tonight Show changes to fit him and his zaniness. Carson and Leno are not zany.

FWIW, Ollie North was following his orders. Ollie North is not guilty. It's a shame they choose to chastise this man, and I greatly admire the man for the way he handled the entire situation. They need to move on and find the people who gave him the orders. Enough said. Ollie, we love you.

Just watched a bunch of Letterman on Carson vids, and I noticed that Dave is always dressed pretty hip... or at least hip for whatever era it is... and Johnny always looks a good 10 years out of date. Maybe they had an older wardrobe lady who wasn't quite up on the smart outfits of the day. Anyway... that's my shower thought for the day.
