This hymn was written in the 1870's by a chicago lawyer who's wife, 3 daughters, and governess were on a ship involved in a trans-Atlantic collision with another vessel. It sank in only 12 minutes. His 3 daughters perished. He penned this song on the voyage to bring the others home from France.

Yes, and that was AFTER he’d lost his only son to a fever and then lost almost all he owned in the Great Chicago Fire. Every time I hear this song and think of the “troubles” in my life, I feel humbled. God worked a mighty work in Horatio Spafford, a Godly man who didn’t lose his faith.

I met Russ Taff once. I was at a Michael English concert at a church, I was front row & I see someone out of the corner of my eye sitting down beside me. I moved over & I suddenly realize that Russ Taff (who I've listened to since I was a child) was sitting beside me!! I was a bit shocked, but he was so incredibly nice & funny.

Horatio B Spafford wrote it a a confirmation when his children were lost in the sinking of a ship. His wife survived and sent him a telegram that said simply" Saved Alone". By far my Favorite Hymn of the Church.

Hahaha - you do what I do - replay replay replay!!!!! Another favourite. Not even their best version. And yes, I LOVE watching Russ (and others) respond, enjoy and be absolutely blessed (as we are) when David sings - there has been some great vision on the Gaither DVDs of others being so taken over while watching him.

I love that you don't interrupt the video constantly. You appreciate as we do watching and listening without the irritation of too frequent pauses just to make a comment. David and Guy are too spectacular for that! I also love that you replay the video because once is never enough when it comes to David Phelps. His voice just hits our hearts and souls and leaves us somewhere between earth and heaven. What a blessing!

A wonderful song to review Guy Penrod is "Then Came the Morning." It's a very special song. On David's streaming concert last Friday, he said singing "He's Alive" in Jerusalem at a Sunrise Service was really a high point in his career. What could be better!

Can I say I just adore Russ Taff? He always gets so excited when David sings -- but who doesn't? Guy sounds so good in this song. The Jerusalem Concert is surely one of my faves. I would love for Lyle to react to David's performance of "These Are They" from this concert also. Are you listening Lyle? 🤣

Well if you see this a good selection for Guy's reaction videos would be: Revelation Song,Singing with the saints( with David),You never let go, Because he lives( Canadian homecoming version), Jesus the light of the World, Then Came the Morning, Yes I Know and the Old rugged Cross made the difference. You could even react to his vocal range video, it's huge straight up to B5. He and David are the very best of the Vocal band and compliment each other so well.

Thats the Gaither Choir and it was filled it was filmed in Jerusalem which you already know from the comments. I have no idea if you will see this or not since its 3 years old but this was my grandmothers favorite hynm. I played it on repeat when she was dying. She had fallen and had brain bleeds but was concious most of the time. Anyxway, I remember my parents flew the gaithers on our plane to our hometown which was pretty small. They are amazing just by themelves. But the pianist in this was unbelievable. Heis no longer alive bc I looked him up several years ago. I think this.being filmedin Jerusalem and all the instruments made it even better. This came up after I watched it on my own. As i see in the comments a lot of other go to it as well. If you concentate on the piano you will be amazed even more. Now im going to see your reaction to ptxs kiss from a rose bc I dont think I saw your reaction to it. I would love to see what ptx woukd do with this hymn but I doubt they will ever do it. You are a jewel for doing this!! I liove it so much!!

You need to read Russ's book about overcoming alchohol addition. Whenever he hears a song that speaks to his soul the Holy Spirit takes control. Love David & Guy's voices. None better!

Guy Penrod is a fabulous singer also; he has a strong voice some of the songs he sings are wonderful. I love it when they both sing together, always beautiful.

This song was written by a man named Horatio Spafford. To cut a very long story short, he lived in Chicago, but his family were relocating to the UK. His wife and three daughters went along ahead of him because he had some affairs to settle first ajd then he would join them later. His wife and daughters took a ship called the Ville du Have bound for England. On the voyage, the ship crashed into a British ironclad warship and sank. Horatio's wife alone survived and made it back to Wales. There, she sent Spafford a letter. It simply read, "Saved alone, what am i to do?" Horatio immediately took a ship to Wales to be with his wife. One night, during the voyage, he was approced by a member of the crew, who told him the captain wanted to see him on the top deck. Horatio went up and met the captain, who told him they were passing over the very spot where the Ville du Have sank and his three daughters drowned. Horatio left, went down to his cabin, and wrote this hymn.

Check out " Why Me Lord " by The Gaither Vocal Band. Guy Penrod is doing lead vocals on it, and it is very moving.

When the author of the lyrics, Horatio Spafford, lost his business and then his young son to scarlet fever he sent his wife and 4 daughters ahead to England. When their ship sank his wife was saved but none of his daughters. His wife cabled, "Saved alone. What will I do?" When his ship reached the area of the shipwreck the captain informed him and Spafford penned the lyrics there. More faith than I. Russ Taff has an incredible story of his life as a Christian artist and his fall into addiction and restoration to sobriety. Stay safe, Sweetie!

What a beautiful hymn this is.. I love David but Guy Penrod is absolutely fabulous too. Check out some of their singing back when they were full time Gaithers Gospel in the quartet. Unbelievable voices, check out 'A Sinner Saved By Grace, a fabulous song and the harmonies are amazing.

Your comment about Russ Taff....yes!!! I love watching people watch David (you included, obviously!). There's always such awe and amazement at his abilities not to mention the emotion and conviction that come through. Jason Crabb is a singer sitting in the second row during the Tent Revival concert w/GVB. Jason cannot get over David singing towards the end of He's Alive (your 2020 Easter Special reaction @ 9:03ish & 9:24ish). Jason is today was right, and though he's not in focus, you can see his eyes are huge and his jaw drops at one point. It's a real testament to how David uses the gifts God gave him.

If you enjoy tenor voices here is a video from the Les Misérables 25th anniversary concert. The 4 tenors who play/played the part of Jean Val jean sang "Bring Him Home' together in a quartet. Alfie Boe played Jean Val jean in the 25th anniversary production and he is INCREDIABLE! He is my second favorite tenor (David Phelps is still my #1). Lyle, when you get a chance look up the history of the author of this song, Horatio Spafford. He lost his daughters in the sinking of the ship which he was not on, and later penned the words to this song. Also, I believe this was filmed in Jerusalem.

This song was written by a slave trader ship captain. Do a Google search on the title of the song. He lost his wife and children at sea. It's such a beautiful presentation that after all his wrongs and loss he found peace in God's word.

You are confusing this song with Amazing Grace. Spafford, who wrote this, was not a slave trader. That was John Newton, who wrote Amazing Grace. I think Spafford was a lawyer.

I first heard David Phelps singing this song, but in a video filmed at a Billy Graham Homecoming where he sings with Wesley Pritchard (m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hs2VrLyixqrWn6M.html). In my opinion, it’s a much better version. David doesn’t “play around” with the melody…he just lays it out in a very powerful manner. Well worth a listen. Thanks for the reactions…always appreciated.
