@@jameskuo661 Platt might be well-intentioned, but most of his sermons/books appear to display a lack of understanding/discernment. Here, I will focus on the sermon that you have posted (ironically it is one of his better sermons). The passage of Isaiah is, indeed, about God's glory but also about God's ability to purify. Isaiah is not following God because he has witnessed his glory, but rather God has chosen Isaiah because he already knows his heart. Platt proceeds to talk about the significance of sin. While I would agree that the wage of sin is death, all of his examples are incorrectly chosen (pick one of them and we can discuss further). God does not over-punish but allows our sinful hearts to harden. It is in light of the seriousness of sin and the glory of God that we understand his mercy. And here is the good news: "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Next, Platt moves to the third portion of his sermon and this is where he is dangerously wrong. Isaiah's vocation was to be a prophet, not all of us are called to mission work, Platt often appears to put a burden that God does not put on his followers. "Who is going to evangelize those who have never heard the word?" Just like seeking comfort, blessing, and help from money instead of God, seeking comfort, blessing, and help from one's work is also a form of idolatry. Platt appears to think that God is unable to reach out to those who haven't heard the word (unless we pitch in) and that it is up to his follower to sacrifice everything. What is missing in this picture and the role/guidance of the Holy Spirit. The central message of the Gospel is that when the conscience and/or the devil comes to us asking "How can you deserve heaven when you have done or not done x (Platt would here say not evangelized enough)? You might answer that what Christ did on the cross is enough. The Holy Spirit will convict you of sin in your daily walk ( you may still use the 10 commandments as a reference) and sometimes you will feel called to go beyond the 10 commandments. In short, being a good father, good employer, good employee, good neighbor, and a good neighbor is all part of maturing as a Christian. This is minimized in Platt's Gospel. Finally, as Christians, we should remain aware that even our good works if for the wrong motive and not guided by the Holy Spirit are like filthy rags.

I dont think there is any need to call him a "false teacher". I grew up interdenominational w a parent studying a masters in theology. The other parent was in medicine. So ive learnt a big lesson from my upbringing, reading the Word and my adult experience thus far. Noone is perfect in their preaching/medical practice etc. You must make up your own mind and not blame your decisions on others (obv this context doesnt apply to children/adults unable to do so). A mistake doesnt make someone a false teacher. What is extremely important is that someone can admit that they are not perfect. Platt has done this on many occasions. But I am not here to defend him, just explain my perspective on where he is coming from. Firstly, biblically, ALL believers are called to "go into the world and spread the good news." There is no "special missionary". Some of us are overseas, others in our own communities. Platt makes this clear in his writings and some sermons. 2, I dont know if you are from a Western country, but there is a constant problem of people not living this out. As you mentioned too, living in self centered comfort, but also beyond that. Ive lived in different countries and been involved w different communities. Many of us are not close to living out the lives Christ intended for us. Not only in spreading the good news but in fulfilling our personal calling. I personally believe the two are intertwined, but I know they may not be for everyone. This is due to a lack of willingness to step outside our comfort zone and "go" where God calls us. Be it across the street, or the next city. In the church Platt became a pastor of, he was dealing with a lot of wealthy people who were one of Americas "mega churches". My perception is that he is making a God-directed effort to steer peoples hearts back to a deep relationship with Christ and also address the more serious problem beyond just wallowing in comfort, of the "prosperity gospel". The Prosperity Gospel is a real and dangerous thing and I know people who fall into it. We do not need to be afraid of "Calvanism" as some people are calling Platts teachings. I would be more concerned with preachers making us feel guilty for not giving money to them for a new jet. Platt making some potentials feel guilty on the other hand is really no different to your average fired up pastor making some random person feel guilty cos they made food their god. The differenec is, Platt is addressing global issues. If someone were to take Platts words and believe it meant they absolutely had to go to another country, i would say something was already at work. If they are misguided, then they are misguided but most likely God was already calling them. To rewrite a quote from a band (forgot the name), "If you spend your life living how you believe God called you to live and are wrong, you wasted your life; but if you ignore how you believed you were called to live, you've wasted the reason you were here on earth." (Original quote something like: if you waste your life for Christ and are wrong, you wasted your life but if you wasted your life without Christ and are wrong, youve wasted eternity)

For me, it is not a matter of admitting imperfection (I am daily reminded of my own imperfection) but a matter of seeking help, comfort, and blessing from the true God. Platt creates insecurity in his listeners then ends by pointing at mission work when he should be pointing at the work of Christ. We all have a sinful nature, asking sinners to give up comfort is like putting new wine in old skins. What they need is to know more of Christ. Only going to God for material things is a sign of spiritual immaturity. But, my experience is that God can work with that. At some point, things will go wrong (as it happened to me a few years ago) and they will have the choice - to either find new way/god or cling to God without understanding. I should add that God does take care of needs and it is not necessarily a bad thing to ask. What is important is to trust how he will decide to grant our prayers and to discover that it is more "blessed to give than to receive". "The difference is, Platt is addressing global issues." But, going on a mission trip is a decision which requires discernment, prayer, Holy Spirit guidance,... more than a "crackling voice" sermon. If this is the basis of your faith you will either walk around with pride (thinking that your sacrifice is enough) or despair (worried that you have not sacrificed enough). The only answer is to accept God's grace by faith through Christ alone.
