Spanish legend Villa is the all-time leading goalscorer in Spanish national team history and eight of his international goals have come at the World Cup. He also scored more than 100 goals for Valencia before moving to Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. He scored 18 goals in his inaugural season in the Bronx. El Guaje scored even more goals in his second season in MLS and earned the league’s MVP award for a sensational campaign.
In all, David found the net 23 times, putting him in second for the Golden Boot award, earning him League MVP, the Team MVP, and Offensive Player of the Year awards. In addition, supporters’ group The Third Rail named him MVP and Offensive Player of the Year. David earned the Etihad Player of the Month awards in April and September and was named to the MLS All Star team once again. He was also named in the MLS XI for 2016.
