Bassoonist David Wells performs Telemann's Fantasia No. 1 in C Major (originally for flute in A Major), speaks about his experience being a musician during the April 2020 quarantine, and performs The World’s First Octavin/Serpent Duo! From Mozart’s 12 Duos for Two Horns, No. 8 in F major (originally C major). David is a regular performer with Sacramento Baroque Soloists and performs here as part of the ensemble's efforts to fund its players during the COVID-19 quarantine. It's videos like this that got me into Baroque instruments and music, getting me into the Viola D'amore, which I now am studying in lessons at college.

The Octavian looks like a bassoon and a clarinet had a beautiful lovechild and sounds like a mixture of an oboe and a saxophone

There are like 800 octavins .. I'd love to know how you came to have one!

I’d be surprised if there were even 800 out there! I just got lucky with this one-it came into the hands of one of my students, and I bought it from him and then had it overhauled.

I'd heard of and even heard a bit of the serpent before (and its descendant the ophicleide), but this is the first time I ever saw or heard of an octavin.

This one is made from big leaf maple. Modern bassoons are typically made from various types of maple as well, but are often given a much darker stain.
