David GREAT VIDEO. I inspected both hives at 12 noon today, it was 75 degrees and nice South breeze. Added a deep box with drawn comb in-between the 2 deep box to give the bees more room and the bottom super was full of honey but not totally capped. So, hopefully with the expected heat the hives will be able to handle the heat. Water stream about 50 ft away with plenty of fresh spring water. So far no mites ! HAVE A GREAT DAY AND FATHER'S DAY 👍 😎

Nice tips. Although not cost efficient for big producers, these 5 things can all be easily accomplished when using Long Lang or Top Bar Hives. I made mine tight enough that between the beetle buster traps and Guardian entrances have virtually no SHB ingress so they can live in the shade now. Peaked roofs and vented top boards means that ventilation can be assisted. I might even start spacing the roof tiles an inch off of the roof to give them more of a home style though external venting action. A top mounted round honey feeder can provide water over the brood nest.

Great video David. I swapped out a solid bottom board to a screened bottom board on one of my hives tbis weekend. Really seems to be helping with ventilating the hive, haven't seen them bearding ever since. Hope you had a wonderful Father's Day weekend.

Dave, Great topic for the current weather. So many different ways to successfully keep bees. I'd like to see you address those of us who choose not to upper vent. For reference: This past year we saw Wind Chills of -30F & Heat Indexes of 111F. Over Wintered 100% (multiple Winters) & never any heat related bearding. My setups - Screen bottom, Slatted rack, full sun (90% of day), a layer of that silver bubble insulation inside every lid. Unless feeding, I also seal the hole in the inner covers. Thanks again, for all your informative videos.

I'm sure results vary from beekeeper to beekeeper and from hive to hive configuration and from colony to colony. I started venting on the top in the winter due to the build up of ice inside the hive in my climate due to condensation freezing and this solve "my" problem for me. Bees need moisture in the winter and so some condensation is a must, but not that which drips down on the bees on a warmer winter day.

Hi Dave, I have been doing bees for 18 years, my dad years before me. I came up with the idea of using my bee excluders as spacers, between the inner cover and outer cover. The bees are able to go in and out still because of the openings on the excluders. It was enough to help vent air out the top, and reduced the bearding by 1/2 the amount.

I am lucky to live in the NE US so it's cooler here than most places but it will still be in the 90s all this week. I actually do have my bees just inside the edge of a forest and I don't have problems with small hive beetle- I've only ever seen one in the last few years. Sometimes I just take a 1" long stick and prop the top open slightly. David is right, it helps so much. I run double deeps so I also have a hole in the top brood box which helps.

Here in Texas that is normal temperatures for us at this time of year. Screened bottom board, popsicle sticks under the top cover, corrugated plastic on top of box, and a pond less than 75 yards away. We have not had any bearding with this setup, at these temperatures. All things we have learned from you, thanks David!

You can add a super over an excluder to give more space for heat to rise out of the brood chambers. I also prop the front edge of my telescoping cover on the top front edge of the inner cover. Screened bottoms too. Im in Florida, so we use lots of ventilation tricks. Its been upper 90s here and my Broodminder ahiws inside temps at 94-96 inside.

Florida Panhandle here, and 100+ days are not unusual here. If you ever feel the top of a metal telescoping top you will feel how hot it can get. So What I usually do is put some 2 inch foam insulation on top of the hive with the reflective side toward the sun. Then during winter I put it under the top cover with reflective side toward the hive. Super cheap, and super effective!

Can you use a top feeder board and just put water in the jars for the bees? This could also allow as an "attic" to get the majority of the heat from the hive to go up into the box containing the jar(s) and not in the brood box/honey super.

I have their water source available and clean, why are they going to my pool? Bc it’s cooler? Curious. 🧐 And one of my hives swarmed yesterday and then returned about 20 minutes later. Hmmmm any advice?!? Lol I went from crying to laughing like what in the world!? Virgin queen mating flight!?

Ok. Not seen this question come up in all of your videos. We put our hive in the sun as a deterrent for SHB. And we keep strong colonies to help sequester the beetles. What about on hot days when the bees are bearding. I understand not all of the bees come outside but does it ever create a situation where the beetles have more freedom in the hive? Cheers

@inharmonywithearth9982

I absolutely disagree. I've had more hive beetles collapse hives in hot full sun. The shaded colonies were fine. It IS because the bees almost ALL go outside in the heat trying to keep the brood cool. You are SPOT ON! The Sahara Desert Hive beetles fly inside to a nice hot empty hive and lay eggs unabated. The colonies cool in shade are still inside and continue to police the hive beetles and eggs. I am telling this from experience. I've lost many hives to hive beetles because of a neighbors careless pesticide sprayer causing dead rows of hives that quickly bred swarms of hive beetles. My shaded rows survived the swarms NOT the ones suffering to keep cool. I got them under control and keep it that way but sun is NO HELP at all.
