Thank you David, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and enjoy watching your videos. I found "beehive ant barrier" on eBay, they are a well thought out solution and made in the USA. Basically solved my ant problems. (Wish I could share a picture) Thanks again for great content John Young

On the robbing issue, when no honey flow i open feed using a 5 gallon bucket with about 4.5 gallon of water or so and 5 to 7 pounds of sugar . Put straw in top to keep bees from drowning. A bucket lid with 2 spacers underneath so bees can get in and a concrete block on top to keep critters out. Cheaper than replacing bees. S H B , my colonies are on stands or concrete blocks. I use Scotts Grub X follow directions for application , I use a push spreader which gets it underneath the hives. I saw drastic reduction in 2 weeks. You have to do this 2 times a year. Spring and middle of July. My 25 colonies or so are in a clearing in a woods, it was nothing to open a hive and smash 20 plus SHB. Now i might see one in entire apiary. I got this idea from a video Bob did and adapted it to my circumstances

thanks for answering my question. will go ahead and do a mite count the old fashioned way. had one to two mites in the capped drone cells i opened. ordered formic pro just in case they need a mite treatment.
@apveening
@apveening 6 күн бұрын
If that is one to two mites over 300 capped drone cells, you have nothing to worry about. If it is one or two per cell, don't bother testing and start treating.

For Ants: As someone who used to have a Brazilian Fire ant colony with large open containers as part of the setup and about 10,000 fire ants with zero escapees. If you can find a way of having the hive elevated and the legs incorporate some kind of upside down bowls/cup shapes, (smooth plastic material) coat the inside of these bowls with PTFE fluid and allow to dry. No ant will make it across that barrier, they will simply lose grip and fall off. The reason for the bowl shape is the rain can wash away the coating of PTFE, and needs a smooth surface to work.

Hello David, I love your videos! I am newish to beekeeping I grew up around them 30 plus years ago as a kid but never learned as much as you share! I have tried to combine a swarm and a new nuc this year thinking I had a queen in the swarm that turned out to be a laying worker and have excessive drone comb in one half of the colony. Will the new nuc rework the drone comb for food or will the queen keep laying drones? Thanks

I have a thyme plant that's going crazy. Would it be helpful to just lay a few sprigs on top of the brood frames to repel/kill mites?

@@beek thanks David. I did see that video of you putting Bees in it, but have you taken any honey out of it yet? That was basically my question I think it’s a very expensive hive my children were looking to buy me one and just by the way you explain stuff I didn’t really care for it. Great video by the way Charlie PA.

I thought that a hive's drones fertilized queens from another hive? Is this correct?
@beek
@beek 8 күн бұрын
Drones fly away from their hive to drone congregation areas and mate with virgin queens, not from their own hive. But drones are necessary for this reason, to mate with virgin queens from other hives.

I think you may have misunderstood my question. I understand that drones are important. The point is that the queen and her hive are not benefitting from it. The drones' sperm is only used to fertilize queens from far away hives. So, a queen laying drone eggs is just a waste of energy as it's only benefiting the OTHER hives in the area.
@beek
@beek 7 күн бұрын
Oh I see, well this is how nature works. I see your point and you are correct to a degree because in the fall the hive will kill their drones before winter. However as I mentioned they only raise drone to keep the species alive, to fertilize other virgin queens from other hives.
@apveening
@apveening 6 күн бұрын
@@beek "However as I mentioned they only raise drone to keep the species alive, to fertilize other virgin queens from other hives." And thus spread the genetics of the queen (their mother). I recommend you read up on "The Selfish Gene", once you understand that concept, a lot of seemingly illogical things (like rearing drones) make sense.
